Truck driver stays night in Maryland between drives — and wins big lottery prize

Miami Herald02-07-2025
A truck driver played the lottery while staying overnight in Maryland between drives — and ended up winning a big prize, officials said.
Clayton Webb, a long-haul trucker from North Carolina, makes deliveries in nine states and likes to play lottery games during his travels, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 2 news release.
So that's just what he did when he stayed the night after making a delivery in Silver Spring, officials said. He left his motel room, headed to a nearby Wawa convenience store and put $5 into a lottery vending machine, selecting the Fast Play game Double Win.
He looked at the ticket — a $50,000 winner — then 'folded it and put it in (his) pocket,' he told officials. 'No need to play any more after that.'
Webb's previous personal best lottery wins were $5,000 in his home state and $1,000 on a ticket from Tennessee, officials said.
Naturally, the state that gave him his biggest win instantly became his favorite state lottery.
'Well that's a no brainer,' he told officials who asked which state has the best lottery. 'Maryland!'
Webb claimed his prize on July 2 before he got back on the road for a 'solid' nine-hour drive back home — where he planned to replace the engine on his lawn mower, officials said.
It had blown out recently, so the timing of his lottery win was lucky. Now he could afford to replace it, 'a bigger than usual expenditure, as he cuts grass on 52 acres,' officials said.
'When I'm not driving a truck, I'm on my tractor,' he said.
He'll keep playing the lottery during his travels, officials said.
'I play a little bit,' he said. 'I don't overdo it.'

After two cars stolen, Palm Beach Police remind residents to lock their vehicles

After two cars were stolen in recent days in Palm Beach, the town's police department is reminding people to lock their vehicles. In an alert sent Aug. 2, the Palm Beach Police Department cautioned people to take valuables out of their vehicles and lock their cars and homes. The two vehicles that were most recently stolen on the island were unlocked, said Palm Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Ogrodnick. Six total vehicles have been stolen in Palm Beach this year, he said. "We have these groups that come up from the south, and they're coming through town for a reason," he said of would-be thieves, while noting that this issue is not isolated to Palm Beach. People should remove from their vehicles items that are high in dollar value, and remember to also remove items such as purses, cash and phones that could entice a potential thief, Ogrodnick said. People also should not leave their key fobs in their vehicles — a move that makes it even easier for a car to be stolen, he said. As long as the key fob is nearby: "They can start the car," Ogrodnick said. "And the car is gone." He declined to share the makes and models of the vehicles that were stolen or more details about the incidents, citing the active investigation. People who see something suspicious should contact Palm Beach Police at 911 for an emergency and 561-838-5454 for a non-emergency. Worker had nobody to eat lunch with, so he played the lottery. Then came big win

A nontypical solo lunch date for a Maryland worker turned into an exciting top prize lottery win, officials said. The man from Nottingham told lottery officials he usually has lunch with co-workers but found himself alone one day at a cafe in Cockeysville, about a 20-mile drive northwest from Baltimore. 'There was no one to eat lunch with, so I got four scratch-off tickets to kill time,' the man told the Maryland Lottery, according to a July 31 news release. After getting his tickets and his food, he went back to his office, lottery officials said. Later on, he scratched off the tickets and realized he'd won big after the first ticket, the lottery said. The lucky lottery player won a top prize worth $57,777 from a Lucky 7s Tripler he bought for $5, according to the lottery. When he showed his wife, she didn't believe it was real, he told lottery officials. . Five of the eight top prizes remain for the game that started in March, lottery officials said.

Lottery player picks numbers inspired by late father, wins big. ‘Thank you, dad'

Inspired by her late father, a Maryland woman bought a lottery ticket — and it led to a big prize. The Calvert County woman placed a straight $1 bet on a Pick 5 ticket using numbers from the day of her father's death, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 30 news release. The player checked the numbers on her ticket, which she bought at a Prince Frederick convenience store, for the July 25 evening draw and initially thought she 'had won a smaller prize on a boxed bet pick,' lottery officials said. Soon, though, she realized she had 'a perfect match on a straight bet ticket for a top prize' of $50,000, lottery officials said. 'I got that bad boy straight,' the winner said. The woman, who told lottery officials she only buys lottery tickets on Sundays but plays every day, is not stranger to big lottery wins. Two years ago, she won a $62,000 Racetrax prize and also won a 'memorable prize in 2015 on the animated horses game,' lottery officials said. For her most recent lottery win, the woman said she credits her late father. 'My dad sent me some good luck,' she said. 'Thank you, dad.' The winner told lottery officials she plans to use her winnings to 'get her finances straight' and to buy a truck for her husband. Prince Frederick is about a 60-mile drive south form Baltimore.
