Minister urges universities to invest in shaping students' political awareness Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani urged universities to prioritise their role in fostering students' political awareness, alongside their core mission of higher education, knowledge and humanities. اضافة اعلان During a lecture at Al-Zaytoonah University of Jordan titled "The Role of Universities in Shaping Students' Political Awareness," Momani emphasised the growing need to strengthen awareness and knowledge in a world undergoing rapid transformations across all sectors. He highlighted that political awareness cannot be cultivated without developing critical thinking skills, which are essential for students to distinguish between credible information and rumours, truthful discourse and misleading propaganda. He underscored that universities provide the ideal environment for engaging in intellectual and political debates, teaching students the principles of respectful disagreement and fostering a culture of intellectual pluralism. Momani called for the integration of concepts such as digital governance, the right to freedom of expression, and responsible freedom into student programs, activities and public discussions within universities. Momani stressed the importance of universities leading efforts to raise awareness among students about the dangers of electronic disinformation and information manipulation. He emphasised the role of higher education in preparing the new generation to counter fake news and misleading propaganda, thereby protecting national discourse in the digital domain, adding that strengthening Jordanian national identity is a top priority. The identity, he explained, is not just a slogan for special occasions but manifests daily through responsible behavior, firm stances and a deep understanding of what it means to be Jordanian proud of the country, committed to its leadership and dedicated to protecting its institutions and serving the community. He reaffirmed that Jordan's primary interests lie in safeguarding its security and stability, ensuring social, political and economic resilience. He reaffirmed Jordan's unwavering support for Palestine, its people and its cause, stating that "a strong and resilient Jordan is best positioned to champion the nation's causes, foremost among them the Palestinian cause." Momani addressed attempts to undermine Jordan's reputable national positions, especially regarding Palestine, describing such efforts as slander, misinformation and distortion of Jordanian efforts. He stressed that responses to the campaigns must be based on facts, clear discourse and firm policies, which Jordan continues to uphold. He pointed out that Jordanian institutions have professionally managed media coverage that lacked professionalism and honesty regarding Jordan's support for Gaza and regional issues. He reaffirmed that Jordanians are proud of their country's contributions to national causes, noting that Jordan's positions are honourable, progressive, and influential. "We have always been at the forefront of defending Arab values and interests, and the Jordanian model has become a role model worldwide," he said. Mohammed Majali, President of Al-Zaytoonah University, highlighted the university's commitment to fostering students' political awareness through various initiatives such as student councils and courses designed to develop personal and civic responsibility. He emphasised the importance of extracurricular activities in building students' intellectual, cultural, political and social identities promoting constructive dialogue, respect for diverse opinions and the acquisition of a broad range of knowledge and skills.

Israel intends to establish "Gilad Military Division" on border with Jordan
Ammon News - The Israeli occupation army intends to establish a new military division, dubbed the "Gilad Division," on the Jordanian border. The division is scheduled to operate from the tri-border area between Israel, Jordan, and Syria in the north, all the way to Ramon Airport in the south. The Gilad Division, part of the Central Command, will begin initial operations on August 1 and later expand its area of responsibility, according to Times of Israel. Times of Israel also added that Israel plans to upgrade its fence on the border with Jordan in the coming years. The division was set to be staffed by standing army troops as well as members of new light infantry brigades based on volunteer reservists. So far, the new volunteer brigades have recruited over 10,000 soldiers and commanders. Five brigades are planned, and they are based on where the soldiers reside. In addition to operations on the Jordan and West Bank borders, the division's members would also be ready to respond to sudden events in their respective regions.

United Nations to vote to demand immediate Gaza ceasefire
Ammon News - The United Nations General Assembly will vote on Thursday on a draft resolution that demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the war in Gaza after the United States vetoed a similar effort in the Security Council last week. The 193-member General Assembly is likely to adopt the text with overwhelming support, diplomats say, despite Israel lobbying countries this week against taking part in what it called a "politically-motivated, counter-productive charade." General Assembly resolutions are not binding but carry weight as a reflection of the global view on the war. Previous demands by the body for an end to the war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas have been ignored. Unlike the U.N. Security Council, no country has a veto in the General Assembly. Thursday's vote also comes ahead of a U.N. conference next week that aims to reinvigorate an international push for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. The United States has urged countries not to attend. In a note seen by Reuters, the U.S. warned that "countries that take anti-Israel actions on the heels of the conference will be viewed as acting in opposition to U.S. foreign policy interests and could face diplomatic consequences." The U.S. last week vetoed a draft U.N. Security Council resolution that also demanded an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" and unhindered aid access in Gaza, arguing it would undermine U.S.-led efforts to broker a ceasefire. The other 14 countries on the council voted in favor of the draft as a humanitarian crisis grips the enclave of more than 2 million people, where the U.N. warns famine looms and aid has only trickled in since Israel lifted an 11-week blockade last month. The draft resolution to be voted on by the General Assembly on Thursday demands the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. It demands unhindered aid access and "strongly condemns the use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and the unlawful denial of humanitarian access and depriving civilians ... of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supply and access." "This is both false and defamatory," Israel's U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon wrote in a letter to U.N. member states, sent on Tuesday and seen by Reuters. Danon described the General Assembly draft resolution as an "immensely flawed and harmful text," urging countries not to take part in what he said was a "farce" that undermines hostage negotiations and fails to condemn Hamas. In October 2023 the General Assembly called for an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza with 120 votes in favor. In December 2023, 153 countries voted to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. Then in December last year the body demanded - with 158 votes in favor - an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire. Reuters

Argentinian embassy in 'Israel' to be moved to Jerusaelm, announces president Milei
Argentine President Javier Milei said Wednesday his country would move its embassy in 'Israel' to Jerusalem, the status of which is one of the most delicate issues in the 'Israel'-Palestinian conflict. "I am proud to announce before you that in 2026 we will make effective the move of our embassy to the city of west Jerusalem," Milei said in a speech in the 'Israeli' parliament during an official state visit. Argentina's embassy is currently located near Tel Aviv. 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Milei for his decision. 'Javier, you are a true friend. With this visit, we are bringing our relations to new heights. 12,000 kilometers separate Buenos Aires, Israel and the Knesset in Jerusalem. This great distance is compensated for by the closeness of our hearts,' Netanyahu said.
