Club World Cup gets massive security upgrade after chaotic incident that led to dozens of arrests
Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, will have a massive police presence throughout the remainder of the Club World Cup this month, as the city looks to avoid a repeat of the near-deadly incident that resulted in 26 arrests last year. The 2024 Copa America final saw a swarm of ticketless fans rush the gates for a match between Argentina and Colombia, leaving fans terrified and bloodied as security struggled to contain the crush, as they attempted to break in. Videos showed some fans trying to climb through air vents to gain entry. Police had to lift distressed children over barriers to avoid them being crushed, while elsewhere officers tackled to the ground the ticketless fans they could catch in a forlorn attempt to keep the hoards at bay. But things are different this summer. "We've put extensive measures in place to protect fans, players and staff," Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said before the tournament. "The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is leading all security efforts for this global event." Changes made over the past year mean fans for this tournament must pass through three separate checkpoints that enclose the entire campus before getting close to the stadium. Steel fencing is set up around the perimeter. First up is a ticket check at temporary gates, taking up large parts of the parking lot where tailgate parties might usually take place. Then comes another airport-style screening under tents where bags are checked by X-ray machines. Even flags need to be approved. Fans were able to get much closer to the stadium before checkpoints at the Copa America. "When I was at the final, the security guards just opened the gate and started letting people through," Edison Negron, a Boca Juniors fan from Puerto Rico, told The Associated Press when describing the scenes as fans crushed against the barriers last year. Miami-Dade County said at the time that a full review would be conducted and that the scenes "cannot happen again." "There will be a significant law enforcement and security footprint in and around the stadium to ensure public safety for all the events," Det. Argemis Colome told the AP, while adding that social media was being monitored prior to matches. Preparations have included special training for a rapid-deployment force as part of a multi-agency response to potential crowd trouble. "If things go south, we get ready for civil unrest and unruly fans," the sheriff's office said in a social media post. A large police presence has been evident at both games played at Hard Rock so far — Saturday's tournament opener when a crowd of more than 60,000 watched Inter Miami vs. Al Ahly and Monday's match between Boca Juniors and Benfica in front of nearly 56,000. Patrol cars have been stationed along the interstate outside of the stadium and, within the grounds, officers equipped with face shields and protective clothing are on patrol. FIFA said it had worked closely with stadium officials, state and federal agencies "to ensure a robust security presence." Streaming Has Overtaken Traditional TV for the First Time Ever
Streaming became the most popular single form of TV usage years ago, but that was not its final hurdle. The juggernaut of broadcast and cable television combined meant that consumers were still using traditional TV services more than streaming overall, even if streaming was more popular than either of them individually. According to data from Nielsen, streaming just overcame this final hurdle. Nielsen says that in May, cable television accounted for 24.1% of all TV usage and broadcast TV represented 20.1% of all viewership for a total of 44.2%. Streaming services accounted for 44.8% of total viewership, just surpassing the combined efforts of cable and broadcast. This has happened on single days, namely during large events such as the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight on Netflix, but streaming has never sustained that edge for an entire month. The numbers were aided by the addition of more streaming services to Nielsen's metrics. The original list included streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Hulu and Amazon's Prime Video. It was expanded to 11 total services and now includes the Roku Channel, Paramount+, Tubi, Peacock, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The next milestone for streaming will be keeping this lead for an entire quarter. For the time being, cable and broadcast still rule that statistic, combining for 57.6% of all TV streaming in the first quarter of 2025, with streaming comprising 42.4%. Should streaming keep its current lead, the second quarter of 2025 could mark the first quarter that streaming overtakes traditional TV and holds the lead. YouTube and Netflix winning big YouTube led the way for streaming services at a hefty 12.5% of viewership. Following that is Netflix, which remains the largest single video-on-demand service, a title it's held for four years in a row. Rounding out the top five is Disney via Disney+ and Hulu, Prime Video, and the Roku Channel. However, YouTube is the biggest winner. Not only does it lead all streaming services in market share, but it also has the highest share ever measured by Nielsen and leads the way in a growing segment of free, ad-supported services, also known as FAST services. The other FAST services measured by the data firm, including PlutoTV, the Roku Channel, and Tubi, combined for 5.7% of all TV viewing in May 2025, which is more than any individual broadcast network over the same time.

Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's ex-interpreter, reports to federal prison in Pennsylvania
The former Japanese interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani surrendered to a federal prison in Pennsylvania on Monday, beginning a nearly five-year prison sentence for bank and tax fraud after he stole nearly $17 million from the Los Angeles Dodgers player. Ippei Mizuhara, 40, was processed at a low security federal prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, his attorney Michael Freedman confirmed. The facility is about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Philadelphia. Mizuhara was sentenced in federal court in Santa Ana in February to four years and nine months for bank and tax fraud. He was also ordered to pay $18 million in restitution, with nearly $17 million going to Ohtani and the remainder to the IRS. He was sentenced to three years' supervised release on top of the prison sentence. Authorities said Mizuhara began accessing Ohtani's account beginning in 2021 and changed its security protocols so he could impersonate Ohtani to authorize wire transfers. He has admitted to using the money to cover his growing gambling bets and debts with an illegal bookmaker, in addition to purchasing $325,000 worth of baseball cards and paying his own dental bills. He was a close friend and confidant to Ohtani, standing by his side for many of his career highlights, from serving as his catcher during the Home Run Derby at the 2021 All-Star Game, to being there for his two American League MVP wins and his record-shattering $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani made his highly anticipated pitching debut Monday night for the Dodgers nearly two years after having elbow surgery.
