UN Recognizes World's First Chair for Alliance of Civilizations at EuroMed University of Fes

Israa Farhan
As part of the recent meeting of the High-level Advisory Council of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), held in Marrakech, the President of the EuroMed University of Fes, Prof. Mostapha Bousmina, and the President of the Alliance of Civilizations Chair, Prof. Abdelhak Azzouzi—who is also a founding member and a Board Member of the Euromed University of Fes—presented the Chair's activities to UNAOC officials.
These were unanimously praised by members of this United Nations body.
In light of the Chair's significant accomplishments, UNAOC decided to formally label the Chair established at the EuroMed University of Fes as: "The United Nations Chair for the Alliance of Civilizations." This is a one-of-a-kind Chair globally, grounded in the values of both the UNAOC and the Euromed University of Fes.
Among the distinguished personalities present at the meeting were:
His Excellency Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, USG, UNAOC High Representative; His Excellency Mr. Amre Moussa, (Chair of the High-Level Advisory Council) Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States; Her Excellency Ms. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, Former President of the Republic of Croatia; Her Excellency Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ecuador; Her Excellency Ms. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria, Former European Commissioner for External Relations; His Excellency Mr. Egemen Bağış, Former Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye in the Czech Republic, Former Minister for European Union Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye; Ms. Nihal Saad, UNAOC Director; Mr. Ammar Abdelwahed Al Khudairy, Founding Chairman, Amwal Capital Partners; Dr. Elkhalil M. Binebine, Moroccan Businessman; Ms. Mehrangez Rafieva, Head of Administration, UNAOC, among many other notable figures.
This historic decision is of great significance and symbolism. It affirms this unique Chair as a key academic institution for education and research in the field of the Alliance of Civilizations—an area inherently tied to Morocco's history and the values it embodies.
To enhance its operational effectiveness and ensure the visibility its mission requires, the United Nations Chair for the Alliance of Civilizations has launched an accredited Master's program titled 'Conflict Resolution and Alliance of Civilizations', as well as an accredited Doctoral Training Program, both officially aproved by Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation.
In the same spirit, the Chair has become a hub of academic production, as evidenced by numerous newly published books and scholarly journals. It also serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas, dialogue, and debate—where young students from over fifty nationalities engage in forward-thinking discussions on the future of societies and peaceful coexistence.
Among the Chair's initiatives were the Euro-Mediterranean and African Youth SUMMIT, held on February 14, 2024, at the Moroccan Parliament, on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the Parliaments of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). During this event, youth from thirty countries debated key challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean and African regions and jointly drafted and presented a 'Call for the Future' to the presidents of the member parliaments of the UfM.
The Chair also organized a major event on December 6–7, 2024, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, featuring conferences, discussions, and exchanges on the topic of the Alliance of Civilizations, with participation from numerous international personalities and approximately 1,600 students.
In many respects, the organization of these events by the Chair reflects its full alignment with Morocco's widely recognized vision for peace, and with UNAOC's ongoing strategic actions to promote values of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
It is worth recalling that the 'Alliance of Civilizations Chair' was first announced during the 9th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, held in Fez on November 22–23, 2022, during a joint press conference by H.E. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and H.E. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative of the United Nations for the UNAOC.
This initiative is rooted in the Royal Message addressed to forum participants, in which His Majesty stated: 'That the Alliance of Civilizations should meet in Fez is perfectly natural. Did Morocco not have the privilege and honor of being one of the founding members of the Alliance? Is Fez not the spiritual capital of a Kingdom steeped in history? Is the Al-Quarawiyin University in Fez not the oldest university in the world - the place where Muslim and Jewish scholars, and even a pontiff, completed their instruction? Today, is its Euro-Mediterranean University not shaping a space for academic and intercultural dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean? Clearly, Fez is the very incarnation of a fruitful alliance of civilizations.'
This Royal message strongly underscores that intercultural dialogue and the Alliance of Civilizations should not be treated as a rhetorical exercise, but rather as a new paradigm to be developed through academic research and education.
UNAOC leadership, under the guidance of H.E. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, welcomed the continued efforts of the United Nations Chair for the Alliance of Civilizations and pledged full UN support to ensure the success of its mission.

OPEN// Sisi stresses need for immediate Gaza reconstruction after ceasefire

CAIRO, Aug 18 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Monday called for the immediate start of Gaza's reconstruction once a ceasefire is in place, and for preparations to host an international donor conference in Cairo, in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations. The remarks came during talks in Cairo with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, attended by top intelligence and security officials from both sides. According to presidential spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy, the two sides stressed their countries' joint efforts—alongside the U.S.—to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, ensure unhindered humanitarian aid flow, and facilitate the release of hostages and detainees. They reiterated rejection of any reoccupation of Gaza or forced displacement of Palestinians. Both sides reaffirmed support for a two-state solution based on international resolutions, with Al Quds (East Jerusalem) as the capital of a future Palestinian state. The spokesperson said both sides agreed on the need to intensify joint efforts to find political and peaceful solutions to regional crises, stressing respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of affected states, and the importance of continued Egypt-Qatar coordination to advance mutual interests and regional stability. After Putin's win in Alaska, Zelensky travels to Washington for his day of high stakes talks, how far can he push Trump?

At what was billed as an 'historic' presidential summit, hastily put together in Alaska on Friday afternoon, the optics were as clear and overshadowing as the vast Chugach mountains glistening over Anchorage in the summer sun. US President Donald Trump literally applauded Vladimir Putin as he walked along a red carpet laid out in his honor by genuflecting US troops. After warmly greeting the Russian president, whose full-scale invasion of Ukraine has so far left more than a million people dead and injured, a US B-2 stealth bomber, flanked by fighter jets, roared overhead. But Putin seemed unintimidated by the spectacle. This was, after all, his long-awaited coming out of international isolation party; a political gift bestowed upon the Kremlin strongman, who is indicted for war crimes at the International Criminal Court, by a US president who called him his friend, 'Vladimir.' Later, in the windowless press room on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage, where the White House and Kremlin press pools had gathered wrongly expecting a joint news conference, we found ourselves positioned alongside an energetic, tight-suited reporter from one of the radically conservative news networks who seem to vie for Trump's favor. 'Trump is determined to exit Biden's war,' the reporter confided to me between live shots, referring to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in 2022 when Joe Biden was US president. 'But the Ukrainians and the Europeans are in his way,' the reporter added, seemingly frustrated, as Trump, at the reluctance to accept any deal at any price. Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump meet at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP/Getty Images The comment points to an even bigger, though less obvious, Putin victory than merely returning to the top table of international diplomacy: In pursuit of a quick peace deal in Ukraine, the US president appears to have taken Russia's side on key issues in the conflict. A ceasefire, for example. Ukraine and its European supporters have long argued that halting the violence must be an essential first step in peace talks. Trump, who had earlier accepted that, has apparently changed his mind, posting on his Truth Social platform about going for a full peace deal instead, a long-standing preference of the Kremlin, which sees no benefit in halting offensive operations at a time when it believes Russian forces have the upper hand. As President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine heads to Washington, flanked by European leaders, for direct and urgent talks with Trump, this about-face by the White House will be at the forefront of concerns and negotiations – alongside demands by Putin, and perhaps Trump too, for Kyiv to withdrawal from swathes of strategic territory in the Donbas region of Ukraine that has been annexed by Russia but not yet conquered. That may ultimately be a red line neither Ukraine nor Europe is willing to cross, and their leaders are likely to push back hard in Washington on these territorial demands. But saying no to a quick deal that Trump supports, perhaps thoughts of a Nobel Peace Prize within his grasp, Ukraine and Europe risk casting themselves at the White House – not the Kremlin – as the real obstacles to peace. The fact major territorial concession is being discussed at all is itself, from the Kremlin's point of view, yet another important win. While Ukraine and its Western backers haggle over how much more of Donbas Kyiv should surrender, the territory Russia has already captured by brute force is barely mentioned at all. Anatolii Stepanov/Reuters In the days and the weeks ahead, as the success or failure of peace talks inevitably dominate the news agenda, it's worth considering not just what Putin can get, but what Trump wants. The anticlimactic Alaskan summit was, perhaps, a clue. Watching it firsthand, it was striking how deferential a usually domineering Trump appeared, even allowing Putin – a foreign guest on American soil – to speak first in the joint statements to the press. The US president stood listening quietly at his podium for several minutes as the Kremlin leader held forth on Alaska's Russian and American history before delivering his own impressions of the day's meetings. It was almost as if Putin, who confidently suggested Trump visit Moscow – in a rare English-language remark from the Russian president – was accepting Trump back into the fold, not the other way around; reintroducing him to the world from Alaska as a fellow strongman, with immense power, many thousands of miles away from the petty concerns of Ukraine and Europe.

Trump Rules Out NATO Membership, Crimea Return for Ukraine

Nada Mustafa U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the return of Crimea and NATO membership are not options for Ukraine. Trump added that the Ukrainian president has the choice to either end the war or continue fighting. 'Today will be a busy day at the White House with the meeting of European leaders,' Trump said. 'I have never met with this many European leaders at the same time before.' According to The New York Times, citing senior European officials, several European leaders have been invited to attend a meeting on Monday at the White House with President Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. This gathering comes shortly after Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Washington described the talks as having achieved 'significant progress' in discussions on the Ukraine crisis, though no final agreement was reached to end the conflict. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
