Jeff Ross to make his Broadway debut this summer in one-man show that's far from a roast
Jeff Ross, a comedian known for hosting brutal roasts of celebrities, is coming to Broadway this summer with a one-man autobiographical show that will offer fans a softer, more intimate side.
'The hard part for me is letting go of a bit of my armor — of my roastmaster persona — and letting the audience get to me so that I can then get them,' he tells The Associated Press ahead of a formal announcement Wednesday. 'I think it's healthy to change it up and surprise people.'
'Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride' will play the Nederlander Theatre starting Aug. 5 for an eight-week engagement through Sept. 29.
The show will explore Ross' close relatives, especially his grandfather on his mother's side — Ross calls him 'the hero of my childhood' — who stepped up after the comedian's parents died when he was a teenager.
'It's very autobiographical, but it's also not really about just me. It's about all of us. When I talk about my uncle or my mom, I want you to see your uncle and your mom in the stories. That's really important to me,' Ross says.
'It's very joyful. It kind of takes the stigma out of loss and sickness and lets people know that they're going to be OK no matter what happens.'
The title comes from the days when Ross was living with his grandfather in New Jersey. The younger man would take his grandfather to doctor visits or visit him in the hospital during the day and at night go into New York for open-mic nights.
'My grandfather would always give me money for the bus and a banana, and he'd say, 'Take a banana for the ride.' I reluctantly took it, and more often than not, I'd be stuck in traffic, or I'd get low blood sugar, and that banana would be a lifesaver,' says Ross.
'But it was really his way of saying, 'Be ready for anything' and also, 'I can't go with you but I'm there with you in spirit.' So it was an emotional thing, it was a practical thing. It's something that I still do.'
Ross is known as 'The Roastmaster General' for his incendiary takedowns of Justin Bieber, Rob Lowe, Alec Baldwin and Tom Brady, among many others.
The seeds for 'Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride' were planted in the mid-1990s when Ross gathered jokes and stories about his grandfather for an hourlong set. But digging up the past proved too much.
'I couldn't sustain it emotionally. It was just too much for me as a 30-year-old guy,' Ross says. 'But now, 30 years later, I can dig in and look back and add a layer of experience over it all.'
He was spurred on in large part to losing three comedic friends — Bob Saget, Gilbert Gottfried and Norm Macdonald — within eight months. 'That motivated me to look back at the old show from decades earlier and rewrite it completely for my current brain and my current skill set.'
Ross will be the latest comedian to come to Broadway, following John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Alex Edelman, Amy Schumer, Keegan-Michael Key, Rachel Dratch, Billy Crystal and Colin Quinn. Bill Burr made his Broadway debut this year in a revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross.'
Ross reaches back even further. His aunt took him to see Jackie Mason's 'The World According to Me!' in the 1980s, and the young comedian was floored by the comedian's captivating set.
'It was elegant, but it was also punk rock because he was being bawdy and naughty and hilarious and saying taboo things and it really, really stayed with me for a long, long time.'

Beloved Food Network star Anne Burrell has died aged 55. The TV chef - who became synonymous with her trademark spiky platinum hair - passed away on Tuesday morning at her home in Brooklyn, New York. 'Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,' her family said in a statement obtained by People. Once Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived, they 'pronounced [Burrell] deceased on scene.' Burrell's body will be autopsied by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, who will make the official determination about cause of death. While cops did not name Burrell as the deceased in their statement, PEOPLE confirmed via an online search that the star's address matches the address that the police provided. She worked at a whole host of New York City hotspots including Felidia and Savoy in Soho, where she honed her craft in Mediterranean cuisine. She was later thrust into the spotlight and became best known as the longtime host of Worst Cooks in America. The show, which ran for 28 seasons, saw celebrated chefs mentor amateur cooks in an attempt to transform them from rookies to kitchen experts. The Waterfront review – this Dawson's Creek for grownups is perfect summer nonsense
Do you miss Dawson's Creek now that you're all grown up? Kevin Williamson sees you. And he has reinvented his late-90s/early-00s tale of a close knit community round a watery area for an adult market. Not adult-adult, you understand – we're talking drug-running and crumbling family empire rather than sauce – but the main ingredients of his first TV hit are all here. Namely, masses of plot and some lightly sketched characters to keep it moving swiftly enough that nobody has time to stop and say 'Hang on, fellas – I simply don't believe a word of this!' Those of us who sat through several young women choosing Dawson over Pacey are only here for the second part of the phrase 'credible drama'. The Buckleys and their fleet have long dominated the small fishing town of Havenport, North Carolina. They are rich and troubled. More so the latter as they become less of the former because business is getting tougher and mighty patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany, charismatic, humourless) took his hand off the tiller to have two heart attacks and left his inadequate son Cane (Jake Weary, uncharismatic, humourless) to run things for a bit. Cane decided the best way to do this was to start shifting illegal narcotics for wodges of cash and an unseen gangster called Owen. Alas, we open with a set of Cane's smuggling crewmen being offed by a gang of armed men, and Owen's $10m shipment going missing. Cane asks his cousin Lynette (Bethany DeZelle), at whatever the nautical equivalent of the DVLA, North Carolinian office is, to amend some paperwork to say that he sold the murder boat three months ago. I am sure this is a foolproof cover and that nothing will escalate. The Drug Enforcement Administration descends – but the family is so steeped in internecine warfare that they hardly notice. Harlan returns to the office to beat the living daylights out of Cane and advise the clan that the problem lies not in drug smuggling but in not drug smuggling enough. They need to cut the middle men out of the picture and take hold of the supply line themselves. OK, grizzled boomer. Cane's mother, Belle (Maria Bello), is secretly cutting a deal to sell a stretch of Buckley land to a developer. But! This stretch of land is sacred to the memory of Harlan's late mother, and he won't be grizzly pleased when he finds out. And! The developer wants to develop Belle's site too, if ya know what I mean. She is considering the offer. Meanwhile! Cane's sister Bree (Supergirl's Melissa Benoist, flying here too – albeit metaphorically – and, like Bello, improving the show with every scene she is in) has been given a job in the family bar and restaurant after rehab for alcohol and pill addiction. She is keen to get back to proper work but the Buckleys don't think she is ready. She has also lost custody of her son, Diller (Brady Hepner) to her cruddy ex-husband and is trying to repair their relationship on the boy's weekend visits. Unfortunately, Diller is unforgiving of her catalogue of sins – which I suspect goes back to naming him 'Diller' – and progress is slow. Harlan gives Diller a job in the restaurant, putting Bree in near-permanent breach of a court order to stay 300 feet away from anyone she has nomenclaturally abused since infancy, so, you know, that's a worry. Meanwhile, again! On top of the multimillion dollar drug debt, Cane is tormented by the return of his first love/high school sweetheart/soulmate, who is a totally differently pretty brunette from his wife and also married. His wife is called Peyton (Danielle Campbell) and his former girlfriend is called Jenna (Humberly González). That's really all there is to say about them. Twists and reveals come thick and fast. You'll never guess who Bree is seeing on the down-low, or where they met! You'll never guess which character played by an established character actor whose part initially seems too small for him turns out to be a double-crossing major player in the whole caboodle! You'll never guess how efficient and uninspiring the script is! You'll never guess which issues it nods towards so you don't feel like you're entirely wasting your time! Toxic masculinity, generational trauma, the father-son bond, class divides and the problems of the one per cent in a coastal location? Oh, you CAN guess – well done! You get the idea. It is escapist summer nonsense with – God, I hope – no pretensions to being otherwise. Dive into the adult creek and wallow in nostalgia as the waves of absurdity sweep towards shore. Scarlett took to her Instagram stories to upload a photo of Julia and Richard as they enjoyed a special reunion at the birthday gathering. The two could be seen sitting next to each other holding a conversation as the actress draped her arm over the screenwriter's shoulders. Scarlett added text over the image which read: 'gonna go back to crying and feeling so loved i wanna burst.' During her time in the U.K., Roberts also was seen stopping by Soccer Aid at Old Trafford over the past weekend.
