Trying to undo damage caused by previous govt: AP CM Naidu
New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said his government is trying to "rectify at the earliest" the damage caused by the previous YSRCP dispensation and that it would take a minimum of 10 years to bring the state back on track.
Speaking to reporters here, Naidu said he met Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman, and sought central support for the development of Andhra Pradesh.
The Telugu Desam Party president also met New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, and Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
Naidu said his government is working to rebuild the state despite inheriting a massive debt burden of ₹1.20 lakh crore along with liabilities and payment dues of ₹9,094 crore.
"On June 12, we will complete one year in office. We are trying to bring every department on track. Every department has been either derailed or has become defunct. There is no choice but to rebuild," the chief minister said.
He claimed that the level of destruction inflicted on the state by the previous regime was unprecedented. "Such kind of destruction of a state has not happened in the past," he said.
Despite the financial constraints, Naidu said his government is focusing on key projects, including the development of Amaravati as the state capital, completion of the Polavaram irrigation project, and revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
The government is also working to attract domestic investment to fast-track development across the state, he added.
Naidu said that in his meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, he flagged the state's financial problem and sought funds for the Polavaram irrigation project as well as for the Polavaram-Banakacherla link project.
The Polavaram irrigation project will be completed by 2027. There will be no compromise on speed and quality. The central government is also monitoring the progress of the project closely, he said.
In a separate meeting with Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, Naidu said he discussed the Polavaram-Banakacherla project. The CM said the river linking project would benefit millions in drought-hit areas and serve as a model for river-linking across India.
The Detailed Project Report is expected by June 2025, Naidu said. He requested better coordination between the departments concerned to fast-track the project.
He said the proposed project aims to divert surplus Godavari floodwater to drought-affected areas through a three-part water transfer system, including the Bollapalle reservoir.
In his meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Naidu said he presented a strategic vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national hub for defence manufacturing and aerospace innovation.
The proposals included development of integrated defence facilities, revival of critical manufacturing units, support for indigenous aviation programmes, establishment of testing and training centres, and creation of thematic defence hubs.
"We discussed a comprehensive roadmap for Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a cornerstone of India's defence and aerospace future. Grateful for his encouraging response and assurance of full support," the chief minister said in a post on X.
In his meeting with New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, Naidu requested the allocation of rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and urged expediting approval of proposals submitted by the state's electricity distribution companies in January.
"Had a fruitful meeting... With the Centre's support, we will reduce energy costs, empower our people, and lead India's clean energy transition," Naidu said on X.
The chief minister has set a target of installing 20 lakh rooftop solar units by 2025. Under the scheme, SC/ST households will receive free rooftop solar systems while backward caste households will get ₹10,000 per kWp subsidy for up to 2 kWp installations.
Andhra Pradesh's Clean Energy Policy 2024-29 targets an additional 72.6 GW of renewable energy, including 40 GW of solar power.
In a meeting with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, Naidu sought support to transform the state into a pivotal hub for space manufacturing and innovation.
The state's proposal outlined the development of two state-supported space cities, one near the ISRO SHAR spaceport and another near Lepakshi, to serve as integrated hubs for satellite production, launch vehicle development and industry collaboration.
He also apprised the Union minister of the appointment of former ISRO chief S Somanath as the honorary adviser on space technology to the government of Andhra Pradesh.
In his meeting with Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Naidu submitted a detailed letter outlining Andhra Pradesh's strategic role in advancing India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
During the meeting, the CM appreciated the Union government's initiatives, especially the launch of the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme , which are pivotal to realising India's vision of becoming a global hub for electronics production.
He highlighted Andhra Pradesh's readiness to complement this vision through robust policies like the Semiconductor Display Fab Policy and the Electronics Manufacturing Policy which offer fiscal incentives and plug-and-play infrastructure to investors.

‘LG promoted, I got demoted': CM Omar makes another pitch for statehood
Joking about his 'demotion' from chief minister of a state to that of a Union Territory, Jammu & Kashmir's Omar Abdullah made a pitch again for the restoration of the region's statehood. He was sharing the dias with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the UT's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Katra on Friday, soon after the PM launched the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line Project , and remembered the inauguration of the Katra railway by Modi in 2014. 'I was the chief minister and you had become PM for the first time. At that time, there were four people, who shared the dais, PM Modi, BJP MP Jugal Kishore, Manoj Sinha and me,' he said, adding that Sinha was the Union Minister of State for railways at the time. 'He (Sinha) got promoted as Lieutenant Governor of J&K, but mine is a sort of demotion. Earlier, I was CM of a state, but, now I am CM of a UT. However, I believe that it will not take long to rectify it. Jammu and Kashmir will again get the statehood under your (PM Modi's) watch only,' he said. Both Prime Minister Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have previously said that Jammu & Kashmir's statehood will be restored, though no timeline has been provided for this. The UT was created by breaking up the erstwhile state into two -- the UT of J&K and the UT of Ladakh in 2019. This was done even as Article 370, which gate the erstwhile state special status, was abrogated. LG Sinha, in his address, said that the PM was 'uniting the hearts of people by ensuring rail connectivity' across the country. 'Train from Kashmir to Kanyakumari is not a slogan anymore. PM has turned it into a reality just moments ago by flagging off Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar,' he said.

Govt launches portal for Waqf properties
The Union government on Friday launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development (UMEED) portal, a centralised platform aimed at creating a digital inventory all Waqf properties, with minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju calling it a 'historic' move that would ensure Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly for poor Muslims. 'The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children,' Rijiju said after launching the portal. He was accompanied by minister of state for minority affairs George Kurian. Calling it a historic step, Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED central portal — developed by the ministry of minority affairs — is more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for the poor Muslims, for whom, it was originally meant,' the Union minister said. The central portal, named after the eponymous UMEED Act of 1995, is intended to streamline the management of Waqf properties, ensure real-time data collection, and provide open access to verified information. It also aims to improve greater transparency, accountability, and public participation, officials familiar with the matter said, adding that all Waqf properties across the country are required to be registered on the portal within six months from the date of launch. Rijiju said that all state waqf board representatives, who participated in the portal launch virtually, have been informed to keep the six-month deadline in mind, while pointing out that not adhering to the same would cause additional delays and 'trouble' for the ministry. Registrations will be carried out by the respective state Waqf boards. Properties that remain unregistered beyond the deadline, and extension, if any, will be classified as disputed and referred to the Waqf tribunal, officials said. Ministry of minority affairs secretary Chandra Shekhar Kumar said the UMEED portal will mandate submission of official documents for registering a Waqf property, aiming to prevent the inclusion of 'illegal or encroached' land. For properties lacking such documentation, he added, the mutawalli will be required to approach the waqf tribunal for verification. Notably, the portal also includes a field that asks whether the waqf property is located on government land. 'Since land is a state subject, it will ultimately be up to the state government to confirm or deny whether the land in question is indeed waqf,' Kumar told HT. The portal launch comes in the backdrop of the enactment of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, on April 5 this year. Several petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Act are pending before the Supreme Court. The development comes a day after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) opposed the launch of the portal in view of the petitions against the Waqf law being pending before the apex court. Rijiju, however, said, 'I hope the court recognises that this is a landmark law, and it has now been enacted. The opposition must accept this fact and cooperate with the government to ensure smooth implementation. As for the Waqf rules, it is a natural process—we are actively working on it.' According to the guidelines, properties must be registered with detailed descriptions including dimensions, ownership documents, and geotagged locations. Properties recorded under the names of women will not be eligible to be declared as Waqf. Ministry secretary Kumar said that women, children, and economically weaker sections will be among the primary beneficiaries of Waqf assets. The portal generates a 17-digit unique identification number for each property. It features dropdown-based structured data input, integration with GIS mapping and e-Governance tools, and an online grievance redressal mechanism. Public users will have access to basic property information. A three-tier user verification process has been instituted. The 'Maker' is a mutawalli or an authorised person of the Waqf Board who will initiate data entry. The 'Checker' is a district-level officer or a designated official to verify the data. The 'Approver' is the CEO or another officer authorised by the State or UT Waqf Board who will grant final approval. All data on the portal will be governed by existing data protection and privacy regulations. A toll-free helpline has been made available for technical assistance and support.
