SUV runs over man after clash in Jaipur, one detained: Police
The inspector of Muralipura police station, Veerndra Kureel, said, 'The incident happened on Saturday evening when the SUV collided with another car. Following the clash, the SUV passengers tried to flee and eventually ran over a man, Chandra Shekhar, who died on the spot. We seized the car on Sunday morning and detained one of the passengers while the other three are absconding.'
According to the officials, the victim, identified as Chandrashekhar, a native of Uttar Pradesh who lived in Jaipur and worked as a labourer, was caught in the middle of the clash between two groups after a Scorpio SUV collided with a car.
'Following the collision, four-five men from the SUV allegedly pulled out sticks, smashed the car's windows and got into a fight with the driver. As locals gathered and confronted them, Chandrashekhar, who was passing through the area, fell on the road during the chaos. The assailants, feeling surrounded by the crowd, allegedly sped away in the SUV and ran over him,' Kureel said.
A purported video of the incident also showed that the SUV hit him twice in order to position the car and then accelerated the speed to flee when Shekhar was run over and left in a pool of blood.
'He was immediately rushed to Kanwatia Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident triggered outrage among locals before police managed to pacify the crowd,' he said.
The protesters also claimed that the car belonged to one specific political party. 'However, it is not confirmed yet. Probe is underway,' said the inspector.
A case of negligent driving and murder has also been lodged against four people.
'Shekhar's body was sent to the police station while we formed a team that was sent to the nearby districts to nab the SUV driver and his aides,' said Kureel.
During the search operation, the team traced the car at Srimadhopur from where one of them was detained.
Meanwhile, the incident also sparked a political slugfest as the opposition leaders cornered the government over the deteriorating law and order situation. 'The BJP's party flag seems to be above the law. This incident in Jaipur proves how some party workers, nurtured under the protection of the government and intoxicated with power, easily beat up innocent people on the road with sticks and run over them. This is not democracy, but jungle raj. This is not power, but anarchy. If the government is silent, it simply means that it has given its workers a license to kill the common people. This is an open murder of both law and democracy,' said the leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully on X.
There was no immediate response from the BJP.

Punjab Police detain BJP leaders for holding outreach camps to promote Central schemes
Chandigarh: Punjab BJP Working President Ashwani Sharma on Thursday claimed party workers and leaders were arrested from 28 places in Punjab for conducting outreach camps to promote Central schemes. The party announced to hold similar camps statewide on August 24. The arrested leaders included former minister Perneet Kaur from Patiala, Manpreet Badal from Gidderbaha, former minister Surjit Jiyani from Fazilka, K.D. TMC MLA, councillors get anticipatory bail in 2021 Abhijit Sarkar murder case
In a major relief for Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh, the Calcutta High Court of Thursday granted all three anticipatory bail in the 2021 Abhijit Sarkar murder case. Sarkar, a BJP worker, was killed during the alleged post-poll violence in Kankurgachi after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections in May 2021. On Thursday, a single bench of Justice Joy Sengupta granted them anticipatory bail with certain conditions. According to the court, if the three, while appearing before the lower court on CBI summons, get arrested, they will be granted bail immediately on a bond of Rs 1 lakh. They will not be permitted to enter Sarkar's house in Shitalatla Lane and will have to cooperate in the investigation. The court added that the witnesses should not be influenced or threatened, and none of the accused can leave the country. Pal, Samaddar and Ghosh moved the Calcutta High Court in July, seeking anticipatory bail in the case. On June 30, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a supplementary charge sheet before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Sealdah court in the case, naming Pal, the Beliaghata MLA, Samaddar, and Ghosh, along with 15 others. Pal and the councillors were to appear before the Sealdah court on July 18. According to the FIR in the case, Sarkar's mother, Madhabi, had stated that on May 2, 2021, eight people allegedly barged into their house at Narkeldanga around 3 pm and started 'enquiring about her son'. The accused alleged that the Sarkars had 'illegally occupied rooms belonging to the railways and started beating up Abhijit, leaving him unconscious'. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The CBI began its probe on August 25, 2021. After taking over the investigation, the central agency filed a supplementary charge sheet on September 30, 2021 before the ACJM court in Sealdah against 20 accused, including the 15 already charge-sheeted by the state police. In May 2022, Biswajit Sarkar sat in a dharna outside the CBI office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, demanding a 'speedy and effective' investigation into his brother's death. Days after that, the Central agency summoned Pal. Sarkar's family has alleged that TMC supporters killed him and that Pal had a role to play in the murder. Meanwhile, in the Nabanna Abhijan violence on August 9 case, the single bench of Justice Joy Sengupta granted anticipatory bail to former BJP MP Arjun Singh, BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh, BJP leader Shanku Deb Panda and Kali Khatik with the condition that they will cooperate with the investigation. The same bench had earlier granted anticipatory bail to BJP MLA and former cricketer Ashok Dinda in the case.

Trinamool MLA, two councillors granted anticipatory bail in Bengal post-poll violence case
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Beleghata Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and two Councillors Papiya Ghosh and Swapan Samaddar in the murder case of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar. Justice Joy Sengupta also said in the court order that if the Trinamoool Congress leaders are arrested on the basis of the summons sent by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), they will be granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh. The judge has imposed several conditions on their bail. On Thursday, the court made it clear that none of the three people will be able to make any provocative comments. The area of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar's house in Sheetalala Lane near Kankurgachi area in Kolkata cannot be entered by them. In addition, they will not be able to travel outside the country without the permission of the court. At the same time, they will have to be present during the trial of the lower court. BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar was killed in the post-poll violence following declaration of 2021 West Bengal Assembly election results. Both Samaddar and Ghosh, along with Pal, were named as accused in CBI's fresh supplementary charge sheet on post-poll violence. They had moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking anticipatory bail. While hearing the case on Thursday, Justice Joy Sengupta observed that the CBI has filed a supplementary charge sheet four years after the murder of the BJP worker. In this connection, there is no evidence against the three accused Trinamool Congress leaders. The accused have fully cooperated in the investigation. Therefore, the court granted them anticipatory bail. "All three have been granted anticipatory bail by the court today. But the court has imposed certain conditions. They cannot enter the area of the victim's residence. They cannot leave this country without court's permission," said lawyer Imtiyaz Ahmed.
