AI-Powered Scams Surge Ahead Of Amazon Prime Day 2025, Warns McAfee
A new report from cybersecurity firm McAfee has revealed a sharp rise in AI-enhanced shopping scams targeting Prime Day shoppers. The 2025 Global Prime Day Scams Study by McAfee Labs has identified more than 36,000 fake Amazon websites and over 75,000 scam texts impersonating the retailer.
In India, where 96 per cent of consumers plan to shop online during the event, 71 per cent have expressed concern over AI-enabled fraud, the study has claimed. While many shoppers take precautions, deepfake influencers, urgent refund notifications and spoof delivery messages are emerging as common threats.
"Prime Day is a time of excitement... but it has also become a prime target for scammers using AI to create hyper-personalised, convincing attacks," said Pratim Mukherjee, Senior Director of Engineering at McAfee. "Indian shoppers... are increasingly falling prey to scams driven by urgency and persuasion."
Some of the findings include:
39% of consumers have encountered deepfake scams around major sale events, often featuring fake celebrity endorsements. Many victims lost more than Rs 40,000
81% of shoppers received suspicious messages such as "limited-time deals" (48%), bogus delivery updates (31%) and fake discount codes (28%)
Younger consumers (18-24) are most at risk, reporting scam exposure rates of 17%, compared with just 5% among those aged 65 and above
The report warns that nearly one in five victims of sale-related scams stay silent out of embarrassment, underlining the psychological toll beyond financial loss.
How shoppers can protect themselves:
Avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages; go directly to official apps or websites
Enable two-factor authentication and use strong, unique passwords
Watch for red flags like urgency or bogus payment prompts
Monitor bank and card statements closely
If in doubt, pause before clicking
Other interesting findings from McAfee study:
96% of Indians say they shop online, especially for clothes and electronics. 7% say they do so almost daily, 21% a few times per week, 16% once a week, 33% two to three times per month, and 17% once a month or less.

As Kolkata schools flag plagiarism using AI tools, parents debate its role in homework
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly become an undeniable presence in today's classrooms. Tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta AI are now routinely being used by students and sometimes even their parents to complete assignments. It has become more challenging for teachers and schools to instill academic honesty, and the very nature of learning. Schools across Kolkata are reporting a surge in AI-generated homework submissions, from writing essays to solving complex mathematical equations, sparking concerns about academic integrity while triggering a debate about technology's role in education. Educators note that students, mainly of secondary and higher secondary classes, are increasingly relying on tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini for assignments. 'We understand that they use AI, especially the students of 8 to 10 standard. The blatant copying from AI is noticeable by teachers' said principal CA Lucas, GD Birla. Many teachers also note that the quality of writing differs vastly when a student is given an essay at home and at school. 'Students were asked to write an essay at home and they were able to write it well, but at school their answers are not up to the mark,' said Shatadru, principal of Techno India School. Parents, however, have neutral opinions regarding the use of AI. 'I use ChatGPT or Gemini to understand a few simple things for my child, not exactly to copy it, but to understand what could be the answer. Sometimes, I use AI to understand what type of writing one needs for the essay topics, but she does not copy it directly. It also helps in ideating the topic…,' said the mother of a Class 5 student studying at Our Lady Queens, Kolkata. 'When a child is taught to use AI, they will majorly use it to do most of the work, which is ideally not good because it does not help during examinations. It is important to keep a check on whether they are frequently using AI or not,' she added. Students, meanwhile, using AI praise its efficiency, and many openly admit how embedded it has become in their everyday academic life. 'It analyses better, makes the lengthy answers short and it can give us questions, meaning if you upload a picture of a question paper in ChatGPT based on that it can help you understand the MCQ pattern in the exam paper,' said a class 10 student from a well-known school in Kolkata. 'I use it for solving questions, making questions for me to solve, to get answers to reasoning based questions whose answer is not available on the internet,' said another student from class 8. The Heritage School Principal, Seema Saptu, however, advocates for adaptation. 'I'm getting clear about this one thing that AI is here to help us and … we have got to embrace it. It is our responsibility as adults, teachers, to ensure that children learn with AI properly. (Anisha Ghosh is an intern at the Kolkata office of The Indian Express)

National Handloom Day 2025: Know date, theme, history and significance
National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year. This day recognises the importance of handloom weavers to the nation's economy and culture. India's handloom sector boasts a rich cultural heritage. India's artisan community has kept traditional crafts alive by reimagining them in fresh, contemporary styles that appeal to today's consumers. Additionally, National Handloom Day supports those who work in the business and emphasises its importance. This day offers a vital chance to show our gratitude and support for the weavers who put in endless hours to produce beautiful works of art. What is the theme of the National Handloom Day 2025? The theme for the 11th National Handloom Day in 2025 is "Handlooms: Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation". This theme highlights how important women weavers are to maintaining India's handloom tradition and advancing the country's economy. Additionally, it emphasises handlooms as a way to help rural communities and promote sustainable fashion. History of National Handloom Day The Swadeshi Movement of 1905 is where National Handloom Day traces its origins. The movement's goal was to boycott British products in favour of those made in India. Notably, one of the key goods that was heavily advertised during this period was handloom textiles. However, it was not until 2015 that the day was celebrated. In 2015, the Indian government announced that August 7 will be observed as the National Handloom Day every year. It is now observed nationwide with a range of activities and festivities. Significance of National Handloom Day There are three main reasons to celebrate National Handloom Day. Firstly, the day honours India's centuries-old handloom weaving tradition. Secondly, it is a chance to recognise the important role that handloom weavers play in the Indian economy. And thirdly, the day highlights the importance of sustainable fashion, as handloom products are crafted using natural fibres and eco-friendly techniques with minimal environmental impact. Inspirational quotes for National Handloom Day 2025 • "Handloom is not just fabric — it's history, heritage, and heart." • "Every weave is a whisper from the past, stitched into the present." • "Threads of tradition, woven with pride — that's Indian handloom." • "Support the weaver, not just the weave." • "Handloom is India's soul — vibrant, resilient, and handmade with love." • "Fashion that feels good, looks good, and does good — choose handloom." • "Celebrate culture, support weavers, wear handloom." • "Behind every handloom fabric is a weaver's heartbeat." • "True luxury lies in the imperfections of handmade threads." • "A nation that wears its culture, wears handloom." • "Wearing a handloom is wearing art, soul, and tradition." • "From warp to weft, every thread tells a story." • "Handloom empowers — the weaver, the woman, the world."

The Bank Nifty at 55,411.15 ended marginally higher after the RBI maintained the policy rate, which remained unchanged, and the stance neutral, while Realty, Pharma, and IT emerged as the top losers. The broader indices also ended nearly one percent lower. On the downside, 24,500 for the Nifty-50 index continues to be a promising support zone, while 24,700 would act as a crucial resistance area for the bulls. The Bank Nifty index is nearing a crucial support zone between 55,200 and 54,900, as per Bajaj Broking. As expected, the RBI maintained a neutral stance and kept policy rates unchanged, acknowledging global headwinds while emphasizing India's domestic resilience, fiscal prudence, and strong rural demand. The inflation outlook has turned more favorable, supported by a good monsoon and healthy kharif sowing. In anticipation of improvement in consumption, private investment, and continued government-led capex, the domestic economy appears well-positioned for a better second half, reinforcing investor confidence despite external uncertainties, said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited. Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on India as a "penalty" for its continued import of Russian crude oil, while pledging similar measures against other nations that buy Russian energy and thereby fund Moscow's cash-strapped war effort in Ukraine. The new tariff applies to goods entered into the U.S. 21 days from Aug 6, 2025 (except shipments already in transit before the deadline, which must arrive before Sept 17, 2025. Trump's latest tariff offensive brings total duties on Indian imports into the United States to 50% —20% higher than the tariff on China and 21 percentage points above that imposed on Pakistan. 'We expect the markets to fall by 1-2% in a knee-jerk reaction, but most would expect a resolution of the same. Impact on GDP will be around 30-40 bps if these tariffs are sustained for a year,' said Dhiraj Relli, MD & CEO, HDFC Securities.
