SBP launches nationwide 'Go Cashless' campaign for Eid-ul-Adha

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has initiated a nationwide 'Go Cashless' campaign to promote digital payments and reduce reliance on cash transactions within cattle markets during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
This strategic initiative, in line with SBP's goal of fostering digital financial inclusion throughout Pakistan, was officially launched today, May 20, 2025, and will run until June 6, 2025, or Eid night.
In partnership with the banking industry, the campaign aims to streamline the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals in 54 designated cattle markets across the country.

Following the success of last year's digitalization efforts, this year's campaign seeks to further expand digital adoption among market participants.
Within these cattle markets, digital payment solutions can be utilized for various transactions, including the purchase of sacrificial animals, payment for necessities such as water and feed, and settlement of parking fees.
To support both merchants and buyers during this period, the SBP has temporarily raised transaction limits, effective from May 19 to June 15, 2025:
Branchless Banking Level-1 Accounts, Asaan Account/Asaan Digital Account, and Merchant Accounts: Daily transaction limits have been eliminated, and the per-month limit has been increased to PKR 5,000,000.
The public is strongly encouraged to take advantage of these convenient and secure digital financial services during the Eid-ul-Adha period. By participating in the 'Go Cashless' campaign, individuals can contribute to a more efficient and inclusive financial ecosystem in Pakistan.

Shafeeq Abbasi, the central president of the association, says a sack of red flour costs Rs6,000 from the mills to the tandoor, while fine flour is being sold at Rs7,200 per sack. Within a week, the price of regular flour has increased by Rs500 and fine flour by Rs600 - a trend that continues to rise, he adds. "Despite the extreme heat, no tandoor has access to Sui gas. Every tandoor operator is forced to buy commercial gas cylinders for Rs14,000 each to operate. Sui gas and LNG supplies are completely shut off. Electricity prices have also increased, while rental costs for tandoors and labour wages have gone up." Additionally, the prices of ghee, oil, and dry milk have surged, he says and adds under these conditions it is impossible for them to sell affordable bread. Abbasi demanded the government fix new, increased prices for bread; otherwise, after Eid, the All Punjab Tandoor Owners Convention will decide on strict measures.

LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that investors' confidence is rising due to government policies and the stock exchange is setting new records. Speaking at a press conference at DGPR alongside the Minister for Local Government, Azma Bokhari remarked that Pakistan is currently witnessing a season of positive developments. She said the government has provided substantial relief to salaried individuals by reducing their tax burden, and congratulated the Prime Minister for it. Despite IMF pressure, the federal government presented a balanced and people-friendly budget, she said. 'Those who were hoping for Pakistan's default are still unable to digest any good news that benefits the nation,' she said, adding 'The federal budget 2025-26 provides relief to the people, yet some elements wished that Pakistan would become like Sri Lanka and fail to secure the IMF programme.' Bokhari said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is the only party that cannot tolerate national progress. She said these same individuals are now running a 'March to Washington' campaign. Over the last year, the Punjab government has achieved significant successes, which these elements find hard to accept. On the day of the budget, the nation witnessed how PTI turned the National Assembly into a marketplace. Their approach has always been, do nothing, and prevent others from doing anything as well, she added. Azma highlighted that the exemplary cleanliness arrangements across Punjab during Eid-ul-Azha were widely appreciated by the public, with citizens offering prayers for the Chief Minister. However, some elements were bothered even by this success. She also mentioned that Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi requested the Punjab government to support cleanliness operations in other areas as well. Azma Bokhari criticised those who raise concerns about parliamentarians' salaries while ignoring the fact that the Prime Minister and Finance Minister draw no salaries. She urged the public to also consider when the last time parliamentary salaries were increased. 'The people like us from middle-class backgrounds are also involved in politics. Should we, too, start a business alongside politics?' she asked. She mocked Goher Ayub's post-defeat statement in Sumbariyal, where he claimed no campaign was run. 'The truth is that these people, along with their YouTubers, are only loud online. On the ground, they have no presence,' she said. She also remarked, 'The 'Field Marshal' is heading to the United States, but let it be clear, honour and disgrace lie in the hands of Allah — and Allah has honoured him greatly.' The Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq said that during the three days of Eid, exceptional cleanliness arrangements were made across Punjab. The Chief Minister personally oversaw all operations for four days. A total of 315,669 animal remains were collected and disposed of within just three days — a record achievement, he said, adding: 'The 10-day cattle markets were established across Punjab with model arrangements. Around 12,000 public complaints were received and addressed promptly.' He acknowledged that the decision to outsource sanitation services initially drew criticism, but the government acted by issuing notices to companies where complaints of unpaid staff wages emerged. Budget to spell doom for IT industry: P@SHA

KARACHI: Outrightly rejecting the budget 2025-26, IT industry said budget has fatally ignored Pakistan's IT and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) sector, terming disappointment and grave threat to the sector. In a statement, Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) said budget is decisive blow to an industry that has carried the hopes of export-led recovery; youth employment and digital transformation. It said an industry that today employs over 600,000 young Pakistanis—one of the country's largest and most vital pools of skilled talent. Yet in a stunning act of neglect, the budget fails to address two urgent and long-standing demands from the sector: first, a defined and fair taxation framework for remote workers; and second, the continuation—and expansion—of the current tax regime for formal IT exporters. What the industry has consistently asked for is not a one-time concession or patchwork relief, but a stable, 10-year tax policy framework—one that allows companies to invest, grow and compete with global peers. That has been ignored. For over a year, the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) has warned of a growing imbalance. High-earning remote workers employed by foreign companies; often indistinguishable from full-time employees, remain largely untaxed. Meanwhile, P@sha said, companies based in Pakistan, employing and training local talent, are taxed, audited and over-regulated. This makes local hiring more expensive; while incentivizing capital flight and informal arrangements. Talent retention is collapsing; export dollars are being parked abroad, and formal firms are bleeding value. The government's refusal to act is particularly frustrating given the simplicity of the proposed solution: P@SHA has recommended classifying any individual earning over PKR 2.5 million annually from fewer than three foreign sources as a remote worker. This affects only the top 5% of earners and avoids harming freelancers and small remitters. The State Bank already tracks the necessary data. This is a policy that could be implemented overnight—yet has been ignored for years. Worse still is the government's failure to extend the existing tax regime for exporters. This regime was the foundation for over $700 million in investment commitments secured through the Digital Foreign Direct Investment (DFDI) initiative. The country spent hundreds of millions of rupees to secure this investment. Sadly, with no continuity in tax policy and those investments are now in jeopardy. Foreign investors will not engage with a country where rules shift every year. This is not just bad policy—it is a signal to the world that Pakistan's digital economy is not ready to be taken seriously. The results will be devastating. Pakistan's IT sector—its fastest-growing, most globally competitive industry—may lose its momentum entirely. Export growth will stall; jobs will disappear and the government's dream of reaching $25 billion in IT exports will not just be delayed—it will become permanently out of reach.
