Civil defence drill in Bengaluru today: Everything you need to know
Bengaluru city has been chosen due to its population density as well as the fact that it is home to a large number of big tech firms and public sector undertakings (PSUs). Uttara Kannada's Karwar has been selected due to the presence of the Kaiga nuclear power plant, while Raichur will undergo the mock drills due to the presence of the KPCL Raichur thermal power plant.
What is a civil defence drill?
Civil defence drills are designed to simulate real-life emergency situations such as industrial fires, bomb threats, natural disasters, or air attacks, and test the response times of local agencies. The aim is to check preparedness of all the states and Union Territories in case of an emergency and plug gaps wherever necessary.
Why is the mock drill happening?
Following the Pahalgam attack, India has imposed various diplomatic measures and conducted multiple military drills. Meanwhile, Pakistan military said that it has test fired two missiles, even as its troops have been violating ceasefire protocols along the Line of Control for 12 consecutive days now.
In its letter to various states and UTs, the Directorate General Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards said, "In the current geo-political scenario, new and complex threats/challenges have emerged, hence, it would be prudent that optimum civil defence preparedness in the states/UTs is maintained at all times."

Today's drill will include the following measures:
Testing of air raid warning systems.
Functionality checks of main and shadow control rooms.
Civilian and student training on defence protocols.
Simulation of crash blackouts.
Camouflaging of critical infrastructure.
Activation drills for firefighters and rescue teams.

India, South Korea resolve to set ‘new industrial ambition' in high-tech sectors
India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition' in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar said, 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence.' Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years,' he said. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Jaishankar made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. Calling on citizens to contribute to nation-building, UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria Friday said: 'Let us build an India not just of tall buildings but of noble ideals — an India where development is inclusive, and where every citizen works with commitment and love for the nation's progress.' Kataria, who was the chief guest during the 79th Independence Day celebrations at Parade Ground, Sector 17, highlighted the key achievements of Chandigarh's development, law enforcement, education, governance, environment, and health infrastructure. He spoke about the successful rollout of the new criminal justice system, power sector reforms, and initiatives such as free uniforms, recruitment of teachers, and the enhancement of school facilities. Kataria praised Chandigarh's environmental efforts, including rooftop solar expansion and a floating solar plant in Sector 39, while also noting progress in e-governance, public safety, sanitation, and digital services.
