Why Is Brian Burkheiser Leaving I Prevail Band? Exit Explained

Yahoo19-05-2025
Wondering why Brian Burkheiser left I Prevail after a decade as co-vocalist? The longtime frontman, known for his clean vocals and emotional delivery, had been a central part of the band's sound since their 2013 debut. After years of health struggles and lineup adjustments, his quiet exit marks a major shift for the Grammy-nominated rock group.
Here's what led to Burkheiser's departure, how the band plans to move forward, and what fans can expect next from I Prevail.
I Prevail officially announced on May 15, 2025, that co-vocalist Brian Burkheiser has parted ways with the band. The group described the decision as 'mutual' and 'difficult' in a statement shared on social media, expressing gratitude for Burkheiser's decade-long contribution since the band's formation in 2013.
Burkheiser had provided clean vocals alongside Eric Vanlerberghe, who will now assume full vocal duties moving forward. Guitarist Dylan Bowman, who previously supported vocals during Burkheiser's absences, will continue in that role. The band confirmed they will maintain their current tour schedule, including an upcoming performance at Welcome to Rockville, following their recent appearance at Sonic Temple.
In 2024, Burkheiser sat out several tour dates after undergoing multiple surgeries for Eagle syndrome, a condition involving the elongation of bones or ligaments in the head and neck. He explained on social media that he had suffered from undiagnosed symptoms since 2018 and said, 'If I'm being honest, this disease has broken me over the last few years.' The describes Eagle syndrome as causing pain in the face or throat due to atypical structures.
Burkheiser did return for the summer 2024 shows. He and his wife welcomed a son in January 2025. The band has not confirmed whether his medical condition influenced the final decision to depart.
I Prevail's latest album, True Power, was released in 2022 through Fearless Records. An expanded edition dropped in October 2024, featuring the new track 'Hate This Song' and three reimagined singles. The band previously received two Grammy nominations and saw commercial success with hits like 'Hurricane,' which topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in 2020.

Austin Butler Explains Bad Bunny Dance Moves

Earlier this month, Austin Butler went viral after he was spotted on stage during Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico residency, with the actor's questionable dance moves causing quite a stir on social media. In case you missed it, Bad Bunny, real name Benito Ocasio, has two stage areas for these shows, and one of them — which is made to look like a casita — is both a performance area and a VIP section. And as Benito was performing, Austin was caught on camera leaning nonchalantly against the casita with his arm crossed tightly across his body. But he isn't stationary. Instead, Austin is seemingly feeling the music as he dramatically sways his hips and smiles to himself. Needless to say, people were left baffled by Austin's moves — with some observing that he looks 'scared to move,' while others theorizing that he's 'boring' at parties, and has "no rhythm." But during his appearance on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Austin explained that there was way more to the situation than meets the eye as he acknowledged that he did look pretty out of place. First things first — and perhaps most importantly — the star admitted that he'd taken an edible shortly before the show. Secondly, Austin revealed that he had no idea that he was going to be on display during Benito's performance. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon, the Oscar-nominated actor started out by explaining that he and Benito became friends after starring in their upcoming movie, Caught Stealing, together. 'We went to Benito's show, and we had lunch with him earlier in the day, and he was kind of telling us about the show, but I didn't realize what it was gonna be,' Austin began. 'How they have the main stage, and then I thought we were going to be in the audience, like, with everybody, and so somebody gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought that was a good idea at the time.' 'I ate the edible, and then it turns out we're in, like, a casita, a house that is basically the second stage that he comes out on,' the star continued, before sharing that he is shy, saying: 'I'm in an ironic job because I don't really like people singing 'Happy Birthday' to me, and suddenly I'm on stage with Bad Bunny and the edible is… Working.' 'It was wild, and it's like my brain is in two movies,' Austin went on. 'Because one, I think: 'I'm so proud of [Benito],' and I'm watching him going: 'Oh my god, look how much you mean to everyone here,' I'm falling in love with Puerto Rican culture, and the dancing, and everybody's so sexy and amazing… And then the other part of me is like: 'Don't dance.'' 'Because you'll take attention away from him, this is his moment!' Austin explained. 'So I'm like: 'Hide!' My body's kind of saying 'hide,' but the music's so good, and it's in my bones at some point, so I'm wanting to dance but then the other voice is saying: 'Don't take attention away!' So I ended up just like swaying my hips and crossing my arms.'Jimmy then left Austin red-faced when he played a clip of his dancing before imitating his guest's moves from behind his desk. 'For whatever reason, every time I uncrossed my arms I felt like I was drawing attention to myself!' Austin sheepishly admitted, before adding that he was wary of looking like the 'sad Ben Affleck' meme, saying: 'I don't want to be the sad guy, but you also don't want to be the guy who's dancing crazy and drawing attention.' Austin then asked Jimmy if he'd ever felt that way at a show, and Jimmy confessed that he did feel uncomfortable at Harry Styles' concert because he was so much older than most of the Jimmy wasn't letting Austin get away that easy, quipping that no matter how uncomfortable he was, he didn't resort to pulling out the actor's edible-induced dance moves. You can watch the full interview moment — including Austin's dance — below, as always, let me know what you make of it all in the comments!

Open Mike Eagle is the king of heartfelt, surrealist rap

The rapper Open Mike Eagle knows how to start from scratch. After a run of unimpeachable, cerebral albums in the 2010s and bubbling momentum, Eagle experienced a catastrophic year in 2019. The problems began with the cancellation of 'The New Negroes,' his short-lived variety show on Comedy Central, but they came to a head when Eagle (a.k.a. Michael W. Eagle II) and his wife of 14 years divorced. He has coped by relentlessly releasing music and keeping up a robust touring schedule, but somehow he thinks he hasn't been pushing hard enough.

Jason Kelce's Taylor Swift intro will get you so pumped for 'New Heights'

It's Taylor Swift on New Heights Day, which feels like it should be a national holiday. The pop star cryptically left breadcrumbs about her appearance on the podcast of her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother on Monday, which culminated in her announcing the name of her new album, The Life Of A Showgirl." As is tradition for New Heights, the social team dropped a clip of Jason's iconic introduction for their guest before the podcast airs. Jason, dressed in a navy blue Eras Tour shirt that has Swift's face emblazoned on it, didn't disappoint for his introduction of the 14-time Grammy winner. Channeling his inner Chaucer (Paul Bettany) from A Knight's Tale, Jason rattled off Swift's laundry list of accomplishments for an impressive 65 seconds. "Our guest today is a singer, songwriter and producer and director," Jason opened with before hilariously editing her hometown from the listed Nashville. "That's [expletive], she is from Reading, Pennsylvania," he corrected as Travis and Swift laughed. He went on to breathlessly list her singing accolades, even surprising Swift with her own streaming stats for her The Tortured Poets Department album. After the intro, Swift thanked Jason for his efforts before getting in the most perfect dig as the Brads and Chads that might be upset she infiltrated their sacred football podcast space. It was a perfect introduction by Jason, even if it wore him out. The podcast drops at 7 PM ET. It's sure to be must-see.
