Ernakulam records six leptospirosis deaths in three weeks
The district has reported over 35 suspected and confirmed cases of the disease in this period. Those who succumbed to leptospirosis include a 58-year-old male of Ashokapuram, Aluva; a 33-year-old male of Mattancherry; a 37-year-old male, a native of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal; a 44-year-old female of Vazhakulam; a 33-year-old female of Kuttampuzha; and a 60-year-old male of Keezhillam, according to the statistics available with the Department of Health.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener of the research cell of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), pointed out that the number of cases of leptospirosis will go up in the monsoon season compared to the dry months earlier in the year.
'This relatively serious disease is caused by bacteria found in the urine of animals such as rats, cattle and dogs. They enter the soil and find their way into the human body through tiny cracks and wounds in the soles of the feet. This is likely to happen in waterlogged areas, particularly among people who work in agriculture, gardening or cleaning,' he said.
Dr. Jayadevan said that many deaths have occurred because the patient presented late or because treatment was not initiated early enough. A proportionate number of the infected will succumb to the disease owing to organ failure, and those are the deaths that we are actually seeing, he said.
Spike in fever cases
The district has reported about 12,900 fever cases since July 15. Over 500 influenza cases were also reported in the last two weeks, as per the Health department statistics. Two deaths due to hepatitis A were reported between July 15 and July 31.
Those who succumbed to the disease include a 52-year-old male of Pathalam and a 38-year-old male of Avoli, Muvattupuzha. A 29-year-old male of Parakadavu died owing to Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) on July 26. A 56-year-old male of Nellikuzhi died due to dengue fever on July 18.
An average of 37 influenza cases had been reported over the past two weeks. On July 29 and 30, the district recorded a total of 74 and 65 cases, respectively.

Haryana: Ayushman Bharat payments released after IMA threat to halt services
After Haryana chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) threatened to halt services under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) from August 7 due to outstanding payments, Haryana's state health agency (SHA) on Tuesday said that the claims till first week of May have been released to the empanelled hospitals. The SHA said that the claims submitted by empanelled hospitals are processed by a team of 50 doctors through the NHA's online platform. In a statement the SHA said that it had received the budget from the state government on August 4 and that payment to empanelled hospitals has been initiated on a first-in-first-out (FIFO) basis. 'The SHA, Haryana has already processed and paid claims submitted by empanelled hospitals up to the first week of May 2025,' the statement says, adding that a total of ₹2,900 crore has been disbursed to hospitals since the inception of the scheme. 'During the financial year 2025-26, up to July 16, 2025, an amount of ₹240.63 crore has been received from the state and Central governments and fully utilised for settlement of eligible claims.' The SHA said that the claims submitted by empanelled hospitals are processed by a team of 50 doctors through the NHA's online platform. The portal ensures a transparent and impartial claim allocation process by randomly assigning cases to processors. The SHA has also taken cognizance of the grievances raised by hospitals regarding payment delays, claim rejections and non-processing of claims.

Ayushman Bharat scheme: Haryana govt releases funds, restarts payments to private hospitals
Gurgaon: Days before 650 private hospitals in Haryana were set to withdraw from Ayushman Bharat services over dues, State Health Agency (SHA) on Tuesday announced that fresh budgetary funds were released by the Haryana govt and claim payments have been restarted. SHA, which said payments to empanelled hospitals had been initiated on Aug 4 on a first-in-first-out (FIFO) basis, also urged stakeholders "not to disrupt services". On July 28, Haryana chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a letter, which warned of halting services under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) from Aug 7, citing long-pending dues and claim rejections. In a statement, the SHA said, "We remain committed to ensuring transparency, timely disbursement of payments and strengthening public-private partnerships under Ayushman Bharat. We urge all stakeholders to sustain their collaborative efforts to serve the people of Haryana." Claims up to the first week of May 2025 were already processed and paid, SHA officials said. However, the private hospitals still plan to withdraw from the scheme starting Aug 7 if their dues aren't cleared to satisfaction, even as hospitals say "months of claims remain unpaid". Former president of IMA (Haryana) Dr Ajay Mahajan said, "We are still going to withdraw the services from Aug 7. All Ayushman empanelled hospitals of Haryana are unable to function as all payments are not cleared. The responsibility of any inconvenience caused to the poor people of Haryana will lie completely on the shoulders of the govt of Haryana, which is neither providing adequate budget nor smoothening the process of this scheme. " Meanwhile, SHA said the claims are processed by a 50-member team of doctors via the NHA's online platform, with case allocation done randomly to ensure "impartiality". "All deductions follow NHA guidelines and are made only when supporting documents like vital charts, OT notes, or diagnostic reports are missing. Hospitals are given the opportunity to appeal against such deductions, which are reviewed by a medical audit committee," SHA said. SHA also acknowledged concerns raised over delayed payments and non-processing of claims. Over 400 grievances from hospitals were formally resolved through the CGRMS 2.0 portal, it said, adding that more training sessions will be held to help hospitals use the system effectively. As regards another long-standing issue, the SHA said hospitals that earlier received approval for NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) incentives through the HEM 1.0 portal will remain eligible as long as their certificates are valid. Fresh applications must now be submitted through the HEM 2.0 portal. The agency said Haryana is the first state to include IMA representatives in both district-level and state-level medical audit and grievance redressal committees.

Claims of empanelled hospitals under Ayushman Bharat being settled: Haryana govt
Chandigarh, Aug 5 (PTI) The Haryana government Tuesday said that the claims of empanelled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat scheme are being settled. This comes days after the state unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that 650 private hospitals across the state will stop treating patients under the scheme from August 7 if pending claims are not cleared by then. Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda had also recently claimed that the government owed over Rs 400 crore to the private hospitals and said it was playing with its scheme as well as the lives and health of the public. According to a state government statement, Haryana's State Health Agency (SHA) 'acknowledges letter issued by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Haryana dated July 28, wherein the IMA has expressed its decision to halt services under the Ayushman Bharat — Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) starting from August 7, citing outstanding payments as the reason". In this context, the Haryana SHA wishes to clarify the current status of payments, claim processing, grievance redressal mechanisms and empanelment procedures to provide transparency and reassurance to all stakeholders, the statement said. 'We are pleased to state that the budget has been received from the State Government on August 4, 2025, and accordingly, payment to empanelled hospitals has been initiated on a first-in-first-out basis. This development reflects the state government's commitment to ensuring timely disbursement of funds and uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services under the Ayushman Bharat scheme," it said. It further said that the SHA has already processed and paid claims submitted by empanelled hospitals up to the first week of May 2025. 'A total of Rs 2,900 crore has been disbursed to hospitals since the inception of the scheme. During the financial year 2025-26, up to July 16, 2025, an amount of Rs 240.63 crore has been received from the State and Central Governments and fully utilized for settlement of eligible claims," it said. Claims submitted by the empanelled hospitals are processed by a team of 50 doctors through the online platform of the National Health Authority (NHA). The NHA is the apex body responsible for implementing the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana scheme. 'The portal ensures a transparent and impartial claim allocation process by randomly assigning cases to processors. All deductions are made strictly as per NHA guidelines and only when adequate clinical justification or documentation is lacking. 'Before any rejection or deduction, hospitals are given an opportunity to upload the required supporting documents such as vital charts, clinical images, OT notes, and test reports. If a hospital disagrees with a deduction, it may file an appeal through the portal. These appeals are reviewed by a designated Medical Audit Committee," the state government statement said. It said the SHA has also taken cognisance of the grievances raised by hospitals regarding payment delays, claim rejections and non-processing of claims. To date, over 400 grievances from empanelled hospitals have been formally registered and resolved through the Central Grievance Redressal Management System 2.0 portal, which is an online web-enabled system developed to redress the Ayushman Bharat Yojana-related grievances. The SHA maintains regular communication with the Haryana IMA to address their concerns, the statement said. 'SHA, Haryana remains committed to ensuring transparency, timely disbursement of payments, and strengthening public-private partnerships in healthcare delivery. Regular updates on the payment status and other operational matters are being shared with stakeholders through official channels," it said.
