Security arrangements for Muharram, preparedness for floods discussed

LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Health and Emergency Services Khawaja Salman Rafique visited the Rescue Headquarters and reviewed the arrangements made during Muharram-ul-Haram.

The Provincial Minister had a special conversation with Rescue 1122 Water and Rescue Team Attock through video link.
Khawaja Salman Rafique congratulated Khurram Ramzan rescuer and other rescue teams Attock for saving the life of a person trapped in the river. The minister also announced to give Khurram Ramzan an additional salary.
Salman Rafique said that according to the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Emergency Services Department of Punjab is providing the best services to the people. Rescue 1122 teams were always ready ahead of time for every challenge. In the past years, Rescue 1122 teams have always been ready ahead of time during floods and Muharram, he said.
Khawaja Salman Rafique said that flood and rescue teams have been deployed in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur in view of the threat of flash flooding. Special rescue boats have been deployed in Mianwali for the safety of zaireen crossing the river. I will be in the field with you rescuers during Muharram and floods.
Secretary Emergency Services while giving a briefing on the Muharram and flood arrangements, said that all arrangements regarding Muharram and floods have been completed.
During Muharram-ul-Haram, 12,000 rescuers, 815 ambulances, 2,166 motorbikes, 316 specialized and fire vehicles and more than 1,000 special rescue posts will be set up across Punjab. Regarding the flood, Rescue 1122 is ready throughout Punjab. 850 rescue boat engines with boat operators, 1300 life jackets, 156 scuba sets and essential equipment are on alert throughout Punjab.
Mock exercises are underway across Punjab while coordination with the district level administration has been completed. Community Emergency Response Team (Rescue Scouts/Volunteers) are on high alert in the affected areas.
Moreover, Salman who is also Chairman Cabinet Committee on Law and Order visited the control room of the Home Department. He reviewed the live monitoring of the main processions and gatherings across the province from the control room of the Interior Department.
Secretary Interior Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi gave a briefing on the current situation across the province. Khawaja Salman Rafique contacted the control room of the Home Department in the control rooms across Punjab one by one and took the report. On this occasion, Khawaja Salman Rafique said that Muharram-ul-Haram is being celebrated with complete devotion, respect and peace across Punjab.
More than 37,000 majalis and about 10,000 processions are being monitored in Punjab. Geo-tagging has been done on the map of majalis and processions across Punjab and monitoring is ongoing with cameras. Punjab cabinet ministers are visiting all districts and supervising the arrangements.
The Cyber Patrol Cell of the Home Department is taking action against those involved in sectarianism. Accounts of those spreading sectarianism on social media are being blocked and arrests are being made. People involved in mischief on social media are being dealt with iron hands. Implementation of the rules and regulations issued by the Home Department should be ensured.

He said Rescue 1122's flood response units, including over 100 boats, 312 trained rescuers, OBM engines and emergency equipment, have been deployed in vulnerable and low-lying areas across the province. Dr Naseer urged citizens to monitor rooftops and surroundings during rainfall to avoid loss of life or property due to water accumulation. He said 1,594 people have been rescued during the current rain spell.

LAHORE: As many as 108 precious human lives were lost in Punjab during the monsoon out of which 80 people died due to collapse of walls, roofs, etc while 10 people lost their lives due to electrocution. Five people lost their lives due to lightning while13 people were drowned due to careless bathing in canals. About 388 citizens were injured due to collapse of roofs and walls in Punjab, while 8 people were affected by electrocution. This was revealed in a briefing given to the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif who reached PDMA Headquarters. The CM was briefed for three hours on the situation of rains and floods in Punjab. She was apprised about the pre-emptive measures being taken to cope up with the hazards of monsoon spell. She visited the central control room of PDMA. A briefing was given on the Flood Forecast Division, International Weather Portal, Simulation Model, Early Warning System. The Chief Minister observed the working of the central control room and interacted with the representatives of various departments working in the control room. DG PDMA also apprised about the situation of rivers, dams and barrages in Punjab. DG Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Irfan Ali Kathia gave a detailed briefing to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. It was informed in the briefing that 1063 people were rescued by taking immediate action during the torrential rains and flash floods. People trapped in the rainwater in Jhelum and Chakwal were rescued in 23 minutes. On receiving a tip-off, NDMA was contacted and an army helicopter was called. The victims were shifted to safe places for an average of 15 minutes. 'No one died during the rains due to negligence of any person or government institutions. Six people stranded in a flood torrent in Rawalpindi district were rescued by a helicopter. The district administration and Rescue 1122 rescued 450 people in Rawalpindi district. 27 people were rescued by a helicopter in Chakwal district,' the CM was briefed. The briefing further informed that Rescue 1122 saved the lives of 182 people in Chakwal district. 160 people were rescued by a helicopter in Jhelum district. In Jhelum district, Rescue 1122 took timely action and rescued 174 people and Pak Army rescued 64 people. The second major spell of rains in Punjab is likely to start from July 21. The PDMA control room has made it possible to contact every house in different areas of 20 districts of Punjab. During July, August and September, Punjab is expected to receive 25 percent excess rain in general and 40 to 60 percent in 16 districts. The situation of the river in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur is normal. It was further informed in the briefing that as soon as the information was received that the people were going home in the rainwater, the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner went there late at night and monitored the relief operations. 200 life jackets, 100 life rings and 10 boats are available to protect the flood affected citizens. Due to desalting, water was drained from the low-lying areas of Rawalpindi in a few hours. The Irrigation Department, WASA, Municipal Committee and Corporation have desalted 22522 kilometers of rivers and canals across Punjab. Special attention was given to eliminating encroachments in the path of rivers and flood waters across Punjab. 11463 life jackets, 3386 tents, 4450 life rings and 1761 boats have been provided from the warehouses of PDMA to deal with any emergency situation. The briefing further informed that mock exercises, dewatering sets and other equipment were checked in succession before the arrival of monsoon. Every safety embankment was completely inspected across Punjab. 18 relief camps were established in Jhelum, food packets and other essential items were delivered to flood affectees. The Chief Minister monitored a special drone to deliver life jackets to the people trapped in rainwater. She appreciated the performance of DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia and the whole team. She commended the district administration, Rescue 1122, police and other relevant institutions. Torrential monsoon rains have battered parts of Punjab over the past 24 hours, triggering widespread flooding, structural damage, and fatal accidents. At least 33 people have been killed and over 170 injured, according to a spokesperson from Rescue 1122, the province's emergency service. Boats, ambulances, helicopters, and specialised rescue vehicles have been deployed to reach flood-affected areas where road access is impossible. The worst-affected cities include Lahore (13 deaths), Faisalabad (8), Pakpattan (4), and Sheikhupura (3). Single fatalities were reported in Okara, Nankana Sahib, and Sahiwal. Most victims were caught in building collapses, flash floods, and rain-related accidents. This is coming from different parts of Rawalpindi/Islamabad.
