Fern Britton admits struggle not to 'bad-mouth' Phil Vickery to their daughter
Fern Britton has admitted it's not easy keeping quiet about her ex Phil Vickery when she's with the couple's daughter, Winnie. The former This Morning host, 67, called it quits with the celebrity chef, 64, in 2020 after two decades together.
Fern has revealed that she and Phil no longer speak and admitted she finds it hard not to 'bad-mouth' her ex to their daughter, 23, as she lifted the lid on the family's dynamic. Explaining that Winnie "adores" her dad, she said: "Winnie adores him. I'm not going to bad-mouth him in front of her; at least, I try very hard not to. I was the child of divorced parents and my mum never bad-mouthed my father."
The veteran presenter made the candid comments in Yours magazine, where she claims Phil "stopped talking" to her six years ago.
In 2020, speaking to Good Morning Britain, heartbroken Fern revealed the personal struggles that led to their separation, as she explained: "My mum died and my father died and unfortunately Phil and I fell apart."
However, later speaking to Woman and Home magazine, she explained that the former couple's lives would always be intertwined, despite their differences, revealing: "We simply needed to follow our own paths. Over time we realised we weren't necessarily having the kind of life we once did. It seemed right to say 'thank you' and move on. But we do have a good friendship."
"Phil and I had the greatest fun together and we have the most beautiful daughter together, Winnie... so we will always be connected."
Fern has previously spoken about her own parents' relationship, explaining how she and her sister, scriptwriter, Cherry Britton, were always given "some convoluted stories" about why their father, Tony Britton, "wasn't here".
Tony and his first wife Ruth, Fern's mother, divorced when she was just four years. Writing in her autobiography The Older I Get How I Repowered My Life, the Celebrity Big Brother star explains how she discovered she had no memories of her father living with her.
She revealed by the time she was born in 1957, Tony had already left her mother to be with Eva Castle, who would become his second wife.
She wrote: "It transpired that during one visit of a few hours back to see her, he and my mum had temporarily rekindled their feelings and I was conceived.
"Did he go back to his new partner with a – possibly – guilty spring in his step? How did he manage to explain my eventual appearance to his future wife?"
After only finding the truth when she was aged 55, Fern admitted: "I was left with a strong feeling of 'why did nobody say?' Everyone knew,' adding that is had left her was lasting trust issues."
Fern split from her first husband, Clive, after more than a decade together and the birth of their three kids, twins Jack and Harry and daughter Grace. They called it quits officially in 2000, and later that year, she tied the knot with Phil.

Cat Deeley signifies 'new beginning' after split from Patrick Kielty
This Morning presenter Cat Deeley looked in high spirits as she stepped out without her wedding ring today, ditching the band after announcing her split from Patrick Kielty. Cat, 48, and Northern Irish TV star Patrick, 54, married in Rome in 2012, having met in 2002 when co-hosting BBC talent show Fame Academy. The former couple share two sons – Milo, born in 2016, and James, born in 2018 – and appeared to be one of television's happiest couples. Alas, their 13-year marriage came to an end this year, as they announced in a statement on July 29 that they had 'taken the decision to end [their] marriage and are now separated.' Neither party has offered additional comment or explicit details of what led to their marriage's demise, requesting 'family privacy' as they move forward 'united as loving parents'. Despite her recent major life change, though, Cat is still wearing a smile, if not the ring she was given upon exchanging vows over a decade ago—or rather, wearing the ring where you'd expect it. New photos show the ITV star beaming as she got her car washed and stopped to pick up flowers in London. Intriguingly, Cat didn't have her ring on her wedded finger, having swapped it over to the other hand, which is said to be a symbol of 'new beginnings'. Seemingly keen to signify a new chapter in her personal life post-separation, the sparkler took pride of place on her right hand as she changes her relationship status. Granted, some people wear their ring on their right hand while still married, as the hand is associated with strength, thereby representing unwavering commitment in the relationship. However, once separated, wearing the ring on the opposing hand can mean independence. Elsewhere on her outing, Cat flashed her pearly whites at a man who assisted her with her car before making a stylish exit from the carwash. Her blonde locks styled in loose waves, the daytime favourite cut a chic figure in a loose-fitting white blouse, flowy denim trousers, and tan accessories, complete with an oversized handbag. This marks the first time Cat has been photographed since returning from her trip to Spain. She was pictured dining at a restaurant called Chiringuito in Sitges, which is somewhat of a celebrity hotspot. While fellow diners told the Daily Mail that she looked 'downcast' at the time, the sunny Spanish getaway has clearly done wonders for her mood. Cat later professed her love for her hairdresser pal, Ben Skervin, who accompanied her on the trip and shared photos on Instagram, under which she commented: 'I love you'. 'She clearly needed to be around her nearest and dearest during such a difficult time,' an insider added. As for comedian Patrick, he is now back at work, having returned to his BBC Radio 5 Live show on Sunday, marking his first since their split was made public. He, too, seemed upbeat on the airwaves, laughing: 'It's lovely to be back. We are coming to you from sunny Belfast, and we've got Michael Andrew looking after things here. We've got Sammy and Craig looking after things in London. 'It takes a village, folks, to make this show sound so average, but it is not just me who is back. Oh no, what is this? It is a little welcome back letter from the head of the BBC.' Listeners then heard a letter by Tim Davie after Patrick teased that he felt overlooked for the role of replacing Gary Lineker as Match of the Day host. Patrick read out: 'Dear Mr Kielty, thank you so much for your application to be a host on Match of the Day. 'Unfortunately every other host employed by the BBC is currently working hosting on this show; therefore, we don't need your services. Don't call us, we will call you, Tim Davie.' 'Thanks for that, Tim; I shouldn't have read that out on air!', Patrick mocked. It's believed the broadcaster's family knew his marriage was 'over' months ago, when Cat failed to show at the funeral of Patrick's mother in March. 'Whatever rockiness was going on in the marriage, something as momentous as his mother's funeral, you would make up even temporarily and just put your 'best face' on as we say in Northern Ireland,' a close source said at the time. 'Cat obviously knew how close Patrick was to Mary, and she should have come to be by his side, a hand on his shoulder as he buried his mother. 'The fact that she stayed in London and presented This Morning on the day, it's not been forgotten.' While the funeral was taking place, Cat insisted that she had stayed in the capital to be with her seven and five-year-old boys. A spokesperson for her told the Mail: 'Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day.' She and Patrick, who is the host of The Late Late Show, were friends long before getting together romantically, making their first official appearance as a couple in 2011. Patrick previously spoke about the moment things switched from being platonic, telling the Loose Women: 'There was a moment; we always used to keep in contact, it was her birthday, and she was in Beverly Hills, and I was in Dundrum (County Down). More Trending 'And obviously LA are eight hours behind; it was around tea time with her. I texted her happy birthday from a little Irish pub. It was around two o'clock in the morning, approaching closing time. 'And she said, 'It is just a shame you are not in LA because I'm having a lunch tomorrow' – so I said, 'I will be there.' 'So I got up at five, jumped on a six o'clock flight from Ireland, got into Heathrow at seven, and jumped on a 20 to 10 flight, got in at quarter past one, walked into the Beverly Hills Hotel. 'I said, 'Hi,' she fell off the chair, and we have been together ever since.' Got a story?
