Katy Perry's butterfly stage stunt almost ended in disaster

Express Tribune6 days ago
Katy Perry's butterfly-themed stage spectacle took a terrifying turn during her Lifetimes Tour stop in San Francisco, when a mid-air prop malfunction left her clinging on for safety. The singer was performing her hit 'Roar' while seated on a suspended butterfly rig when the platform suddenly jolted and tilted downward, causing her to slip and grab tightly to avoid falling.
Footage captured by fans shows Perry visibly shaken as she freezes mid-lyric, gripping the prop and glancing anxiously at the support cables. Gasps erupted from the crowd as the star remained suspended above the audience, dangling precariously while the mechanism stalled. After a few tense seconds, Perry raised a hand to signal she was okay and continued singing, drawing applause for her composure.
This incident marks the second prop mishap in less than a month for the 40-year-old pop star. In June, during a performance in Australia, a spherical flying cage also malfunctioned mid-air, causing Perry to nearly lose her footing before regaining balance with the help of nearby crew members. Fans online are now expressing concern about the safety of her elaborate stage set-ups, especially given the recurring issues.
After the latest scare, Perry addressed the moment with a blurry selfie on Instagram Stories showing her shocked expression, captioned simply, 'Good Night San Fran.'
The incident has only amplified the online chatter. Clips of the malfunction have gone viral across TikTok and X, with many fans praising her professionalism, while others question whether the stunts are worth the risk.
With more dates ahead in Seattle, Canada, Europe, and South America, all eyes are now on Perry's team to prevent a third on-stage scare.

Doctor pleads guilty in Perry overdose case

A doctor charged in connection with the drug overdose death of actor Matthew Perry pleaded guilty Wednesday to supplying the Friends star with ketamine. Salvador Plasencia, 43, one of five people charged over Perry's death, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Los Angeles to four counts of distribution of ketamine. Plasencia is to be sentenced on December 3 and faces up to 40 years in prison. He will also surrender his medical license. Plasencia's attorney, Karen Goldstein, said after the hearing that her client regretted his actions. "Dr Plasencia is profoundly remorseful for the treatment decisions he made while providing ketamine to Matthew Perry," Goldstein said in a statement. "He is fully accepting responsibility... acknowledging his failure to protect Mr Perry, a patient who was especially vulnerable due to addiction." Plasencia did not provide Perry with the fatal dose of ketamine but supplied the actor with the drug in the weeks before he was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Another doctor, Mark Chavez, pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry. Plasencia allegedly bought ketamine off Chavez and sold it to the American-Canadian actor at hugely inflated prices. "I wonder how much this moron will pay," Plasencia wrote in one text message presented by prosecutors. Jasveen Sangha, the alleged "Ketamine Queen" who supplied drugs to high-end clients and celebrities, is charged with selling Perry the dose that killed him. She has pleaded not guilty. Perry's live-in personal assistant and another man pleaded guilty in August to charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. The actor's lengthy struggles with substance addiction were well-documented, but his death at age 54 sent shockwaves through the global legions of Friends fans. A criminal investigation was launched soon after an autopsy discovered he had high levels of ketamine – an anesthetic – in his system. In his plea deal with prosecutors, Plasencia said he went to Perry's home to administer ketamine by injection and distributed 20 vials of the drug over a roughly two-week period in autumn 2023. Perry had been taking ketamine as part of supervised therapy for depression. But prosecutors say that before his death he became addicted to the substance, which also has psychedelic properties and is a popular party drug. Friends, which followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adulthood, dating and careers, drew a massive following and made megastars of previously unknown actors. Perry's role as the sarcastic man-child Chandler brought him fabulous wealth, but hid a dark struggle with addiction to painkillers and alcohol. AFP

Jennifer Lopez drops surprise song ‘Birthday' on her 56th

Jennifer Lopez turned 56 and did what only she could do, turned a birthday into a full-blown spectacle. The pop icon and actress celebrated in the middle of her Up All Night Live in 2025 tour with a sparkling silver backless dress, a booming new single and a towering three-tier cake topped with live sparklers. Fresh off a July 23 performance in Antalya, Turkey, Lopez used her one-day break to host a lavish celebration surrounded by dancers, friends and crew. Wearing a glittering metallic gown, she stunned guests as she held a drink in one hand and dropped into full performance mode in front of the cake, which bore giant silver letters spelling out J L O. As the crowd erupted around her, Lopez debuted her new track Birthday, a bass-heavy club anthem with lyrics like 'Name on top of the cake, it's my birthday, I'ma make this famous ass shake, it's my birthday.' She twirled, laughed and whipped her hair as champagne bottles were held up in salute. Videos from the event were reshared by Lopez on Instagram Stories, prompting a social media frenzy. Fans praised her energy, looks and attitude, noting the celebration came just months after a rocky personal chapter including the cancellation of her 2024 tour and her quiet divorce from Ben Affleck. Lopez later addressed the breakup onstage, quipping in response to a 'Marry me' sign, 'I think I'm done with that. I've tried that a few times.' In a separate interview, she confirmed she's 'not looking for no man' and is instead focused on herself and her career. The celebration was not just personal, it was promotional. With her tour resuming July 25 in Poland, Lopez's Birthday drop signals that J Lo is back, unbothered and throwing her own kind of party.

Justin Timberlake's tour falling apart in real time

Justin Timberlake is under fire after a series of live performances on his latest tour left fans disappointed, confused, and even concerned. A viral video from a Paris show triggered the wave of criticism, with viewers accusing the pop star of barely participating in his own concert. In the clip, Timberlake can be seen standing almost motionless while the crowd sings most of the lyrics. Social media erupted, with Reddit threads and TikTok comments mocking the singer's apparent detachment. One user quipped, 'This performance could have been an email,' while another compared it to Airbnb: 'You pay a cleaning fee and still do the cleaning, same here, you buy a ticket and do the singing.' Critics labelled the tour the 'Justin Timberlake karaoke experience,' suggesting his backup singers were carrying the show. Others questioned whether he was even singing live at all, with comments noting the microphone was often on the floor or appeared to be off entirely. What started as jokes has escalated into speculation about Timberlake's health. Some users questioned whether he might be on vocal rest or dealing with undisclosed medical issues. One fan urged honesty, saying, 'If he can't perform, he should cancel the tour, this is manipulative.' Fans who have followed Timberlake since the early 2000s expressed heartbreak over the change. 'In 2014, he was electric on stage. Now it feels like he's just fulfilling a contract. The spark is gone,' one longtime fan wrote. Even casual observers seemed alarmed, with some admitting they were 'genuinely worried.' Despite a lone defence that crowd sing-alongs are common, the consensus online is clear: these performances feel empty, staged, and insincere. Timberlake has yet to respond publicly, but the backlash continues to mount, and so do questions about whether he's up to the demands of this tour.
