Meghan Markle's 'commitment failure' left key royal furious after huge sacrifice

Daily Mirror29-06-2025
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dramtically announced they were quitting their royal roles - one key royal was apparently disappointed with Meghan's 'commitment'
It's no secret that marrying into the royal family comes with a huge level of responsibility and sacrifice, with no modern royal understanding this burden more than the late Prince Philip. Before he became the Duke of Edinburgh when he married Queen Elizabeth in 1947, Philip gave up his birth citizenship, his naval career and even his surname.
As he was happy to live on the sidelines next to the late Queen Elizabeth while he still attended royal events and focused on his own philanthropic efforts, it's no wonder he expected the same level of dedication from others marrying into the royal family. But according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, Philip took particular umbrage with Meghan Markle and her unwillingness to fully devote every aspect of her life to the Firm when she married Prince Harry in 2018.

Speaking to Sky News in 2020, Ingrid said: 'I think he's very, very disappointed because I think he feels he gave up his naval career in order to stand by the Queen and help the monarchy.
'And why can't Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy? He just cannot understand why she couldn't support Harry and help him rather than wanting to have her voice.'
According to Ingrid, after Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to step down as working royals in January 2020 and the late Queen had called a summit in Sandringham to try to resolve the family crisis, Philip opted not to be a part of the talks about the Sussexes' future outside of the monarchy.
The meeting was attended by the late Queen Elizabeth, Prince Harry, Prince William and the then Prince Charles, while Princess Kate, Camilla and Prince Philip did not attend. Meghan was reportedly outraged that she was unable to go to the meeting as she was in Canada with baby Archie.
Seward claims that the late Duke just wanted to wash his hands of the whole affair, as she said: 'Of course, it irritates him hugely. And when they had the Sandringham Summit, Prince Philip was seen leaving the house very swiftly before they all arrived. He simply doesn't want to get involved any more.'

Philip's quiet fury over Meghan and Harry's lack of dedication to the royal family stems from his decades of sacrifices in the name of the Firm. Before marrying Queen Elizabeth, Philip had to renounce his Greek and Danish citizenship to become a fully fledged Brit.
He also changed his full name from Philippos Andreou of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderberg-Glücksburg to Philip Mountbatten, and earned the title Duke of Edinburgh after his wedding to the late Queen.
The Duke also had to leave behind his successful career in the Royal Navy to take up new royal duties as the consort to the late Queen.

I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track," he said. Later during the evening, Strictly enthusiasts were urged to watch The One Show as three additional contestants were being revealed by Roman Kemp and Alex Scott. ‌ The opening member of the trio disclosed was Love Island champion Dani Dyer, with the daughter of EastEnders icon Danny Dyer wed to Jarrod Bowen. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Dani said: "Getting the opportunity to be on Strictly is the second most amazing thing I've done this year! I feel very very blessed and cannot wait to get my dancing shoes on." The third and final celebrity revealed on the magazine programme was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former footballer who represented Leeds United, Atlético Madrid and Chelsea during his playing career. ‌ Following his retirement, Jimmy has established himself as a recognisable figure in football commentary for leading UK sports broadcasters, taken charge of clubs including Burton Albion and Northampton Town and worked as an assistant coach with the England national squad. She posted: "Extremely cool love this!" To which Alex, who is presently in Italy, responded: "So excited to get dancing!". ‌ Adding to the praise was Motsi Mabuse, who penned: "Welcome to the Strictly family, Alex! Can't wait to see your personality shine on that dance floor, here's to sparkle, rhythm, and unforgettable moments! Woop Woop." Countless Doctor Who enthusiasts couldn't hide their delight as they anticipate discovering whether Alex excels at dancing as much as she does at fighting aliens. @bobby_seagull declared: "Was such a big fan of hers on Doctor Who!" @mommagledders shared: "I love her so much! She would be great with Johannes!". @stephlhulme penned: "Ahhh! I am a big Whovian and this announcement has made my day." @richardfrankscomedy noted: "Such a cool signing." @giselle_barajas1234 exclaimed: "DOCTOR WHO FANS ARE SCREAMING. 'I worked for King Charles – this is what royals really think of Prince Harry announcement'

EXCLUSIVE: Former royal butler Grant Harrold thinks that Harry and Meghan will likely be "more careful" not to cause any "further upset", but there's one thing that the Royal Family dread A former royal butler has weighed in on what he reckons is the Royal Family's "biggest concern" regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix deal. It comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would be extending their lucrative deal with the streaming giants, in what was described as a "multi-year, first look deal". ‌ In this new partnership, Netflix can approve or turn down any projects before anybody else, an agreement the New York Times described as a "first-look deal" with the couple, who now have "more options" but "less investment". ‌ It stands to reason that the royals might be apprehensive about the prospect with a range of Harry and Meghan-helmed TV and film projects on the horizon. ‌ However Grant Harrold, who worked as a butler for King Charles, thinks there may be less to worry about this time. Indeed, he suggests that Harry and Meghan will likely be "more careful" not to cause any "further upset", but there's one thing they really don't want to see again. ‌ Grant, speaking on behalf of OLBG, said: "I do think they will start being more careful not to cause further upset as they move into their future business ventures. 'If they cause any more damage with these programmes it will impact any on-going attempts to build bridges. 'I think the Royal Family are beyond this now. I don't think they'll be surprised or disappointed by it, because they're used to them doing what they want now. Their biggest concern will be another tell-all documentary on their fallouts with the family.' ‌ In the original arrangement five years ago, the Sussexes, who stepped away from their royal duties for a new life in California in 2020, landed an eye-watering deal reportedly worth more than 100 million dollars (£74 million). Announcing the latest deal on Monday, Meghan said: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand. My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' ‌ It comes before the grand premiere of season two of With Love, Meghan, which is due to air this month. In the latest instalment of her lifestyle programme, the Duchess is set to grace our screens with a "fun and heartwarming" season. It promises "celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends" as they take on some "hands-on adventures" that will reportedly be packed with "laughter and discovery". As part of the first deal, Harry and Meghan produced a number of programmes that spanned everything from scripted series to lifestyle, with the shows also including Polo, Heart of Invictus, Harry and Meghan and Live to Lead. Harry and Meghan would be a phenomenal success, scooping 23.4 million views when it aired in December 2022. It was so popular that it became the most viewed documentary over its initial four days.

The reviews for Edinburgh's festivals are in...

Our reviewers have been busy on the ground, taking in all the best comedy, theatre, and performance. But what came out on top? The Herald has teamed up with to make the purchase of tickets for the festival so much easier. When Karine Polwart heard the story of the 200-year-old Sabal palm tree that was about to be felled in Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden, it sparked the idea for this new illustrated fusion of song cycle and storytelling. Produced by the Raw Material company as part of this year's Made in Scotland Edinburgh Festival Fringe showcase, Polwart's story comes with a twist that lends even more charm to a work of monumental beauty, says Neil Cooper. Superstar musicians playing the repertoire they learned in the 1990s is all the rage in Edinburgh this week. In Nicola Benedetti's case, she was 11 years old and a pupil at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London where 15-year-old Alexander Sitkovetsky was one of the star students. He is now artistic director of Wroclaw's NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra and the second concert of its Edinburgh residency reunited the schoolmates to play music that they had played for Menuhin shortly before his death. The result was not only the most joyous music-making but also the most perfect expression of Benedetti's position as a working musician directing the Edinburgh International Festival, writes Keith Bruce. Which came first? Chicken or egg? In the case of this remarkable work by Belgium's FC Bergman company, who open the show by getting a real life hen to let loose an egg into the earth beneath, probably both. Surrounded by the eight performers of this seventy minute ritual navigation through ancient Greek poet Hesiod's idea of the five ages in his poem that gives the show its title, the hen's egg drop is as golden a statement on new life as it gets, even if it does come a cropper later on, writes Neil Cooper. At the production's heart are the two towering central performances by Grierson and Cox. Grierson is in typical chameleon-like form as Fred, presented here as a rather sad, pathetic figure without empathy or morality. Grierson doesn't crack a smile throughout, delivering each line with withering intent, writes Neil Cooper. Good comedy requires light and shade. For the first ten minutes, she embraces the shade. Memories of her mother's death, four days before Rosie's 11th birthday, leave many of the sell-out crowd in tears. 'Don't worry, you haven't bought the wrong ticket. This isn't Angela's Ashes, The Musical. There will be jokes,' she promises. And there are. Jokes and anecdotes and gentle whimsy. She conducts the tempo and tone of this show like a maestro. We all lean in, writes Gayle Anderson. Alison Spittle bursts onto the stage in an explosion of tulle and sequins. It's like a transformation challenge on The Great British Sewing Bee and they've raided the Strictly wardrobe. A seasoned stand-up, she's absolutely bossing that stage and she knows it. There's a couple of cracking Shrek puns and an Adele gag before she gets to the meat of this year's set, writes Gayle Anderson. Dancer Dan Daw is unflinchingly forthright when it comes to describing himself. He openly identifies as an 'Australian, queer, crip artist' - before adding the crucially important factor of 'kink'.
