Currie Cup result: Pumas' Visagie punishes yellow-fever Griquas

Flyhalf Danrich Visagie scored 24 points on Friday night to spearhead the Pumas to a bonus-point win in Nelspruit, where Griquas paid the price for three yellow cards.
The lead changed hands seven times in a breathless first half of the 2025 Currie Cup opener before the 2022 champions raced away in the second to win 49-28, punishing a Griquas side that lost both halfbacks – Caleb Abrahams and George Whitehead – to the sin bin, along with winger Gershwin Wehr.
Visagie stole the show
Visagie scored one of the Pumas' six tries and booted five conversions and three penalties from the tee, while the visitors crossed the line three times in reply.
Sango Xamlashe and Eddie Swart also dotted down in frantic half, giving the hosts a narrow 25-23 advantage at the break, with Whitehead keeping Griquas in the hunt through a try, two conversions and three penalties.
But once the dam wall broke, the flood followed.
Wiaan van Niekerk, JJ Scheepers and Darren Adonis added second half tries as the Pumas romped clear, sealing a statement win to kick off their Currie Cup campaign in style.
In round 2, the Pumas travel to Bloemfontein to battle the Cheetah while Griquas host Boland.

Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo will be happy with their start to the season following their win over Western Province. The Bulls put in a workmanlike performance to beat a brave Western Province team 48-23 in a Currie Cup match in Cape Town on Saturday evening. Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo's side came into the match as heavy favourites after selecting a very strong team filled with a lot of quality and experience. While most of their United Rugby Championship players are resting or with the Springboks, they still managed to field seasoned pros such as Marvin Orie, Boeta Chamberlain and Sintu Manjezi. Province, on the other hand, fielded seven debutants in their run-on team, including a few Blitzboks, who have been roped in to bolster their squad in the absence of their Stormers and Springbok players. And it was clear from the first minute that Province were going to be under the pump, especially at set-piece time. The Bulls scored five of their six tries in the first half, dominating the collisions and getting penalties as Province tried to stop the bleeding.

Lions maul Sharks in dominant Currie Cup opener
The Lions scored seven tries to crush the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park, avenging last year's Currie Cup final defeat. Jarod Cairns crossed early to open the scoring before Rabz Maxwane finished off a slick move sparked by Angelo Davids' break. Nico Steyn chipped crossfield for Maxwane to gather and score, giving the Lions a well-earned 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes. The Sharks lacked cohesion and discipline, with winger Phiko Sobahle receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown near halftime.
