Lions maul Sharks in dominant Currie Cup opener

The Lions scored seven tries to crush the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park, avenging last year's Currie Cup final defeat.
Jarod Cairns crossed early to open the scoring before Rabz Maxwane finished off a slick move sparked by Angelo Davids' break. Nico Steyn chipped crossfield for Maxwane to gather and score, giving the Lions a well-earned 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes.
The Sharks lacked cohesion and discipline, with winger Phiko Sobahle receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown near halftime.
That infringement gifted the Lions a penalty try and a numerical advantage just before the break at a buzzing Ellis Park. Maxwane made full use of the extra space to bag his second try, pushing the Lions into a commanding 24-0 lead.
Sobahle prepared to return from the bin when Jean Smith was shown yellow, reducing the Sharks to 14 men again early on.
Lions debutant Angelo Davids took immediate advantage, slicing through the broken defence for a well-taken try in front of the home fans.
The Sharks struggled to exit their own half and made little headway against a physically dominant Lions pack and lively backline.
While Sobahle finally crossed for a late consolation try, the game had long since drifted beyond the visitors' reach in Johannesburg.
Rynhardt Jonker burst through the midfield to score before Layton Horn dotted down soon after to compound the Sharks' misery.
The Lions showed superior structure, finishing ability and composure as they exacted revenge for last season's heartbreaking Currie Cup final loss.
With confidence high, the Lions now shift focus to a testing home fixture against Western Province at Ellis Park next Saturday.

B&I Lions look to history, Wallabies to pride in series finale

The British & Irish Lions have history on their minds as they head into Saturday's third and final clash with the Wallabies determined to sweep a Test series for the first time in living memory. No Lions team have even gone unbeaten in a Test series since Willie John McBride's Invincibles in South Africa in 1974, when a controversial draw in the fourth match denied them the sweep. The Lions did sweep Argentina 4-0 in 1927 and also beat the Wallabies 2-0 three times in the 1950s and 1960s as part of losing tours of New Zealand, but you would need to go back to 1904 for the last 3-0 triumph on a trip solely to Australia. For coach Andy Farrell, however, the importance of the sweep is simply that it was something the Lions had committed to achieving as a squad before heading to Australia. 'Hopefully [the tour] will be remembered for the type of rugby that we played and the way that we went about it together. That's it,' he said after naming his team on Thursday. We've achieved that, but we've a huge responsibility to make sure that we finish this off with something that we promised ourselves.' In keeping with that spirit, Farrell made only minor tweaks to his team for the Stadium Australia clash, bringing Blair Kinghorn in on the wing, James Ryan into the second row and an extra forward onto the bench. For Australia, Saturday is all about salvaging some pride after losing the second Test, and the series, to a last-minute try in Melbourne last week. The Wallabies have proved they can play by 'winning' the second half of the opening Test 14-10 in Brisbane and taking a 23-5 lead after half an hour of the second in Melbourne. Coach Joe Schmidt said it had been difficult to pick the players up after the defeat but thought they should not ignore the progress they have made since he took over last year. "[But] there's not been nearly as much between the teams as maybe people might have expected.' Flanker Rob Valetini and two other starters from last week will miss the match because of injury but Schmidt made a choice to bring scrumhalf Nic White into the team for his last Test before he retires from international rugby. The New Zealander denied it was a sentimental selection, citing White's kicking skills in what are expected to be wet conditions, but was certain he would get an emotional dividend from the rest of the team. 'When you make that contribution over 12 years, it's not sentimentality, but it is a reality when someone is important to the group, the group want to support them,' he said.

Bulls coach Nomlomo makes bold move by shifting Chamberlain to fullback for Currie Cup clash

Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo has made a significant change to his team for Saturday's Currie Cup encounter with the Sharks by shifting Boeta Chamberlain from flyhalf to fullback. Chamberlain was the Player of the Match last week when the Bulls crushed Western Province, but his reward is a move to fullback, with Jaco van der Walt starting in the key position. With a handful of players nursing injuries, Nomlomo also opted for a front-row change — Juann Else comes in for Joe van Zyl at hooker. In a notable selection, former Springbok Aphiwe Dyantyi starts in the No. 14 jersey. Dyantyi has been working to relaunch his career after a two-year ban incurred when he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The former Lions player made a comeback for the Sharks last year, but after failing to make their United Rugby Championship squad, he moved to the Bulls.

Mamelodi Sundowns star Shalulile set to join African powerhouse

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile is actively closing in on a blockbuster move to Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis, as the club prepares to sanction one of the most high-profile exits from the Premier Soccer League this transfer window. Sources at iDiski Times confirm that Esperance are finalising terms with Sundowns to secure the signature of the 31-year-old Namibian international, who left the Brazilians' training camp this morning to prepare for his journey to Tunisia. Shalulile's potential departure would represent a major shake-up for Sundowns, as they look to recalibrate their squad following a dominant domestic campaign. If all goes according to plan, Shalulile will become the second Premier Soccer League star to join Esperance this season, after Elias Mokwana completed his move from Sekhukhune United earlier in the 2024/2025 campaign. The duo's arrival highlights Esperance's aggressive strategy to recruit top talent from South Africa as they aim for continental glory. Shalulile, who also captains Namibia's Brave Warriors, has notched up a remarkable 130 goals in 290 appearances across his time with Sundowns and Highlands Park. Cementing his legacy as one of the most lethal strikers in South African football. His move to Tunisia not only ends a glittering chapter in the PSL. But also signals Esperance's intent to dominate both domestically and in CAF competitions. 'Shalulile's departure would leave big boots to fill at Chloorkop. And all eyes will now be on how Sundowns respond in the market,' the source said. Should Mamelodi Sundowns let Shalulile go?
