B&I Lions look to history, Wallabies to pride in series finale

TimesLIVE2 days ago
The British & Irish Lions have history on their minds as they head into Saturday's third and final clash with the Wallabies determined to sweep a Test series for the first time in living memory.
No Lions team have even gone unbeaten in a Test series since Willie John McBride's Invincibles in South Africa in 1974, when a controversial draw in the fourth match denied them the sweep.
The Lions did sweep Argentina 4-0 in 1927 and also beat the Wallabies 2-0 three times in the 1950s and 1960s as part of losing tours of New Zealand, but you would need to go back to 1904 for the last 3-0 triumph on a trip solely to Australia.
For coach Andy Farrell, however, the importance of the sweep is simply that it was something the Lions had committed to achieving as a squad before heading to Australia.
'Hopefully [the tour] will be remembered for the type of rugby that we played and the way that we went about it together. That's it,' he said after naming his team on Thursday.

'We came here wanting to win a series. We've achieved that, but we've a huge responsibility to make sure that we finish this off with something that we promised ourselves.'
In keeping with that spirit, Farrell made only minor tweaks to his team for the Stadium Australia clash, bringing Blair Kinghorn in on the wing, James Ryan into the second row and an extra forward onto the bench.
For Australia, Saturday is all about salvaging some pride after losing the second Test, and the series, to a last-minute try in Melbourne last week.
The Wallabies have proved they can play by 'winning' the second half of the opening Test 14-10 in Brisbane and taking a 23-5 lead after half an hour of the second in Melbourne.
Coach Joe Schmidt said it had been difficult to pick the players up after the defeat but thought they should not ignore the progress they have made since he took over last year.

'My belief is that 18 months ago, no-one gave us a chance of challenging the Lions,' he said.
"[But] there's not been nearly as much between the teams as maybe people might have expected.'
Flanker Rob Valetini and two other starters from last week will miss the match because of injury but Schmidt made a choice to bring scrumhalf Nic White into the team for his last Test before he retires from international rugby.
The New Zealander denied it was a sentimental selection, citing White's kicking skills in what are expected to be wet conditions, but was certain he would get an emotional dividend from the rest of the team.
'When you make that contribution over 12 years, it's not sentimentality, but it is a reality when someone is important to the group, the group want to support them,' he said.

When will Springboks name team to face Wallabies?

After a couple of days off, the Springboks regrouped on Sunday to begin preparing for the back-to-back Test matches against the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August and Cape Town on 23 August to start the Rugby Championship. There will be great excitement and anticipation for the first team announcement considering that it will provide some genuine insight into the thinking of Rassie Erasmus after plenty of experimenting with selection during the July internationals. Especially after seeing the Wallabies' competitive performances against the British & Irish Lions, Erasmus will surely be planning to bring a number of first-choice players and combinations into the mix for the first Test against Australia. It's expected that the first Springbok team of the Rugby Championship will be named on Tuesday, 12 August, with the exact time still to be confirmed. A recent training camp featured a series of gym and field training sessions, as well as boardroom sessions, and Erasmus said they will delve deeper into the opposition from this week. 'We have laid a good foundation, and next week we will zone more into what we expect from Australia and start developing plans to counter what we expect from them,' he said. 'They showed against the British & Irish Lions what they are capable of, so we need to be ready mentally and physically for what they will throw at us in South Africa.' The matches against Australia will be followed by successive Tests against the All Blacks in Auckland and Wellington (on 6 and 13 September) and Los Pumas in Durban and London (on 27 September and 4 October). 'We had an intense week of conditioning to get the players ready for what will undoubtedly be a challenging Rugby Championship campaign against some of the top teams in the world,' Erasmus added. 'So we are pleased with the strides made and the mind-shift the players made for what will be a completely different contest against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. 'We identified a few key areas of our game that we felt we needed to improve on after the Incoming Series, and we incorporated those areas into our training and conditioning blocks this week. 'The teams we will face in the next few months will ask different questions and pose different challenges, so it was important for the group to align on what to expect in the next few weeks, so this camp was vital in ensuring that we prepare adequately for what lies ahead.' Levy hoping 80-minute performance is just around the corner for Western Province

Western Province coach Labeeb Levy feels his players are starting to gel despite two losses on the trot in the Currie Cup Premier Division. Image: Backpagepix Western Province coach Labeeb Levy is hoping his Currie Cup charges can kick on and become an 80-minute team after they looked like they could cause an upset in the second half of Saturday's 40-19 away defeat to the Lions, before fading on the Highveld. The Joburgers led 21-12 at half-time at Ellis Park and extended their lead with another try early in the second half. Province stuck to their attacking game plan and came back at the Lions. Their third and final try of the match brought them within nine points of the home side in the 53rd minute, as they threatened to pull off a surprise result. Video Player is loading. 'It was 28-19 and we were actually on the attack, but then we lost a breakdown penalty and they came back and obviously scored again. 'We just kept telling the guys: just keep going, just keep fighting. Try to get that fourth try.' The tone for the match was set early on, with WP opting to run from their own 22. 'It was part of the plan — to be adventurous, to take the game to them, to strike first — and the boys got energy from it and obviously capitalised by scoring first. Just a few of the passes didn't stick, a few of the conversions didn't stick. But I'm happy for the boys,' Levy said at the post-match media conference. 'We asked them to come out fighting and they did. We scored first. We probably should have scored immediately after that, but then they scored.' It was ultimately a match of missed opportunities for the Province mentor, who is still searching for his first point of the season after two losses. Failure to convert several 22-metre entries into points harmed their cause on Saturday afternoon. 'In the second half we weren't as clinical as we could have been in the first. But we're a new team, a new group — we've only been together for about six weeks — so I'm massively proud of the boys,' he said. 'Conversion-wise there were opportunities we did not put away, but it's just that little bit of synergy that we're working on — getting combos together in training in order to convert those. We need to work on being a bit more clinical.

Roaring Lions maul Western Province

The Lions maintained their unbeaten start to the Currie Cup with a commanding 40-19 win over Western Province at Ellis Park on Saturday, with captain Jaco Visagie leading the way in a physical and dominant display. Visagie scored two second-half tries and led a dominant forward effort as the Lions overpowered Western Province to back up their opening-round win over the Sharks. Western Province struck early when No 8 Louw Nel crashed over for the opening try inside five minutes, but the Lions hit back quickly through flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela, who continued his strong start to the season. Dobela converted his own try and then had a hand in a sweeping move that earned the Lions a penalty try after persistent WP infringements. That score also saw a Province player sent to the sin bin. With the visitors under pressure, winger Rabz Maxwane finished off a flowing attack to stretch the lead to 21-5 by the 21st minute. Western Province fought back before the break through a try from flanker Gideon van Wyk, narrowing the deficit to nine points at half-time. But that was as close as the Capetonians would get. The Lions dominated territory and possession in the second half. Flank WJ Steenkamp extended the lead with a well-worked try from a driving maul, before Visagie grabbed the first of his two tries, again off the back of a strong set-piece. Nel bagged his second try for WP to briefly halt the momentum, but Visagie powered over again with ten minutes to play, sealing the result and adding to his team's bonus point tally. Dobela was named Man of the Match for his sharp playmaking and game management, as the Lions made it two wins from two games and 10 log points from as many on offer. The Lions travel to face Boland next, while Western Province head to Kimberley to take on Griquas. Both sides will look to build momentum as the competition gathers pace.
