Jaishankar emphasises value of trust, says France in many ways is India's most trusted partner in Europe

India Gazette14-06-2025
Marseille [France], June 14 (ANI): Europe is now more self-aware, strategically autonomous and thinks about global issues from European perspective rather than a collective and all this has policy implications, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday and noted that France is in many ways is India's most trusted partner in Europe.
Speaking at the Raisina Mediterranean 2025 conference, Jaishankar said that India and France have had willingness to 'stratagise for ourselves'.
He laid emphasis on the value of trust and pointed to the need of resilient and reliable supply chains.
'I totally agree that one of the things which have gone with the world is a kind of cost determinism by which choices have been made. The result of the cost determinism is that we have ended up with an over concentration of capabilities in one geography which is creating problems for everybody else...it is not just price points and economic efficiencies. Particularly in the digital era...I think there are many other sensitivities, embedded in products and services. Which makes a concept like trust very important. Trust means intuitively we are comfortable with each other. How do you get that? Sometimes by having similar values, sometimes by saying that in my difficulty you supported or who was willing to go the extra mile for our security needs,' he said
'It makes a difference, we are in Europe right now. No question for us that in many, many ways France is our most trusted partner. It didn't happen because one day people got up in the morning to choose this. It was over a set of experiences. We have just come out of some security episodes right now. When I look at who stood by us, who will I trust, with whom I am comfortable, it will surely have consequences on my decisions,' he added.
Jaishankar, who is in France as part of his three-nation visit, earlier said that India and EU have set the goal of trying to complete the Free Trade Agreement by end this year and noted that the negotiators and the stakeholders are reacting to a global environment where the importance of doing this FTA has become much more.
Jaishankar said India also seeks to conclude a defence and security partnership with the European Union.
'We are putting so much focus on Europe because we can see a quantum jump into multipolarity. There's a realisation in Europe that a lot of its problems and solutions will have to be analysed and thought through by Europe itself. Today's Europe is more self-aware, self-reliant and strategically autonomous, and will want to look for partners who can work with Europe in that respect... That gives an additional impetus to India-Europe relations, which were evolutionary, but I predict a very sharp acceleration in that,' he said.
'In Brussels, we made strong progress in our Free Trade Agreement negotiations. We seek to conclude a defence and security partnership with the European Union. We are looking at a space agreement. We have individual agreements with the states of Europe on talent mobility. We are now trying to see if we can get across an understanding across the entire Union... There is a lot of discussion about connectivity because if you're going to do more business and we're all trying to de-risk and stabilise the global economy, connectivity is very much part of that conversation,' he added.
He spoke about the progress in FTA negotiations.
'We have set the goal of trying to complete it by this year. I'm told that half the chapters are done, and for the remaining half, considerable progress has been made. Our trade ministers have met 3 times in the last 6 weeks. We will see another round of meetings by the end of this month. There is a certain urgency and energy that is different. The negotiators and the stakeholders are reacting to a global environment where the importance of doing this FTA has become much more,' he added.
India and France have completed 25 years of strategic partnership. The bilateral relations with France are rooted in deep trust and commitment, and the two countries cooperate closely across all domains of strategic and contemporary relevance besides sharing similar outlook on many regional and global issues. Jain added, 'Businesses worldwide are currently facing uncertainties with regard to trade barriers, rare earth magnet supplies, inflation and end-user demand. Very recently, challenges faced included the pandemic, wars, chip shortages and energy price hikes. Individual businesses like ours cannot change the course of these events. We instead focus on building strength and diversity in our own business. Today, we serve multiple OEMs across India and Europe. Our products go into ICE and electric vehicles. In India, we are strong in 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler end use, and are focused on growing our presence in the 4-wheeler segment, which is already our area of strength in Europe. We are also adding new products to our portfolio. While the markets look indecisive, we have maintained a sharp focus on ensuring that we remain on the path of profitable growth. Our overseas subsidiary has completed the acquisition of Stoferle entities. In India, we are in different stages of planning and construction of five manufacturing facilities - Shendra Castings, Bidkin Alloy Wheels, Battery Pack, Brakes expansion and Forgings expansion. The recent announcement mandating Anti-Lock Braking systems in all 2-wheelers provides further tailwind to our growth plans." The matter was taken up by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Wednesday from the two-judge bench which on Tuesday ordered pan-India culling of strays across the National Capital Region (NCR). National Capital Region (NCR) cities' streets, and ordered Supreme Court hearing of the matter on Thursday before a 3-judge Supreme Court bench led by Justice Vikram Nath. Order on removing all strays from Delhi, NCR withdrawn On August 11, a bench of Justice J B Pardiwala had ordered the Delhi government and civic bodies in NCR to resolve the stray dog issue India by capturing the dogs from Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Gurgaon and its outskirts and shifting them to any shelter home or pound within a specified timeframe. Acting on the representations of two counsels - one of them on grounds that the order appeared to be in conflict with an earlier SC judgment by a different bench - Following the request of animal control laws activists, a bench led by CJI Gavai on Wednesday withdrew all existing pet control laws from Pardiwala's bench and sent the case for further hearing to the bench of Justices Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria. On May 9 last year, a bench of Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Sanjay Karol passed a detailed order disposing of more than two dozen petitions by Kerala government, Animal Welfare Board, NGOs and animal rights activists who had raised objections over contradictory orders passed by different high courts in the state on the culling of stray dogs. On Wednesday morning, the CJI was told by a counsel that the August 11 order by the Supreme Court was also in conflict with a past Supreme Court order last year which had asked civic bodies to treat the strays with compassion and strictly in accordance with the ABC Rules, 2023. Justice Maheshwari and Justice Karol last year had made it clear that dogs cannot be culled on a large scale and directed that civic authorities must act only with the object and intent of the relevant provisions of the existing laws.

European shares hit two-week high as investors gauge earnings, economic data

European shares edged higher to touch a two-week high on Thursday, as investors assessed corporate earnings and economic data. ADVERTISEMENT The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.2%, as of 0710 GMT, while the UK's blue-chip FTSE 100 fell 0.2%. Britain's economy grew by a faster-than-expected 0.3% in the second quarter, official figures showed. Economists polled by Reuters, as well as the Bank of England, had forecast a 0.1% growth for the April-June period. Global stocks have rallied recently, driven by firming bets of a U.S. interest rate cut next month, leading to record highs on Wall Street. Among individual stocks, Embracer slumped 24.1% and was the top laggard on the STOXX 600 index after the gaming company's first-quarter operating profit missed estimates. Carlsberg fell 4.8% after the Danish brewer missed half-year profit and volume forecasts, and said it did not expect any improvement in the consumer environment for the remaining year.
