Making the Team: Jesse James relives ‘dream' draft day moment
'The draft is unpredictable,' longtime NFL tight end Jesse James said. 'Everyone likes to think they're going to a certain place, but it doesn't always work out the way you want.'
The first two days of the 2015 NFL Draft passed by James, keeping him on the edge of his seat to hear his name called during the final day.
Making the Team: How a couple minutes changed Chris Villarrial's life
'When I was sitting there waiting, each pick that went by felt like there was a 45-pound plate being stacked on my chest,' the Penn State product said. 'I felt the pressure building.'
During the fifth round, the western PA native would receive a phone call from a familiar area code, 412. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told James over the phone that his hometown team would be drafting him.
'It was definitely a dream come true,' the 160th overall pick said.
All of the draft day waiting, angst and anxiety was worth it for him.
'It's definitely a big moment in your life,' James said.
Not only was he going to play for the team he grew up rooting for but also suit up with his childhood hero in Steelers tight end Heath Miller.
'The knowledge that (Heath) gave me was huge and I built my career with that foundation,' James said. 'I went in and tried to copy all the processes he went through, and it became extensive. All the stuff that I learned from him really was the foundation for the success I had in my career.'
While it was a dream scenario for James, he knew he had to wake up and work to stay in the league.
'I didn't start off playing right away. I had a lot to prove,' the South Allegheny alum said. 'You weren't going to be given anything you did. So, I sat around the first couple weeks of the season as a healthy inactive and just trying to get a moment to prove myself.'
James' moment would eventually come during week nine of his rookie season against the Oakland Raiders. He would catch a touchdown in the fourth quarter to extend the Steelers lead to two scores, which ultimately helped them get the 38-35 win.
'That game I had to block against some of the best guys in the league,' James recalled. 'It was like Khalil Mack and Aldon Smith. So, it was a tough match up and I was able to step up to the challenge and prove my value to the team.'
James would go on to spend eight years in the NFL with five total teams, being a classic example that good things can come to those who work and wait.

Chiefs place Felix Anudike-Uzomah on injured reserve, ending the 2023 first-round pick's season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah on injured reserve Monday, ending the season for the 2023 first-round pick, who has struggled to live up to expectations following a standout career at Kansas State. The Chiefs also waived running back Elijah Young and signed defensive end Owen Carney and linebacker Xander Mueller. Anudike-Uzomah came out of high school in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and he was a popular pick when the Chiefs selected him 32nd overall in a draft they hosted in 2023. But he has just three sacks and eight tackles for loss over 34 games his first two seasons in the league, and now he will miss the upcoming season altogether. 'That's a tough thing,' Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. 'I mean, he's worked hard. We'll see where it goes. I can't tell you how long it's going to be. It's disappointing for him because he's worked so stinking hard.' Anudike-Uzomah had been buried on the depth chart behind starting defensive ends George Karlaftis and Mike Danna, veteran pass rusher Charles Omenihu and Ashton Gillotte, a third-round pick out of Louisville in April's draft. The Chiefs returned to their practice facility Monday following a preseason loss in Seattle last Friday night. Among those missing the workout were defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (ankle), defensive backs Mike Edwards (hamstring) and Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder), linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee) and wide receiver Jalen Royals (knee). In a bit of positive injury news, Marquise Brown returned to the field Monday after dealing with an ankle that has sidelined him for much of training camp. Brown has sat out both of the Chiefs' preseason games, and Reid declined to say whether he would be on the field for their final exhibition game against the Bears on Friday night. Kansas City opens the regular season against the Chargers on Sept. 5 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. 'Hollywood (Brown) did a little work yesterday, which was good. He'll get a little more today and then we'll see,' Reid said. 'We'll see how he progresses through this thing. But it's not a matter of wanting to be out there. He wants to do it. We're just taking it slow. We don't want any setbacks with this going forward here.' ___ AP NFL:

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin reveals goals for RB Kaleb Johnson in preseason finale
Steelers rookie RB Kaleb Johnson more than lived up to expectations against the Buccaneers last Saturday — and HC Mike Tomlin shared what's next for the third-rounder's development. Following Monday's practice, reporters asked Tomlin what he hopes to see out of Johnson heading into the preseason finale — and the long-time Steelers head coach kept it simple: it's all about comfort level. "I just want to continue to see him get more comfortable in this environment," Tomlin said. "I think the more comfortable he gets, the less fuel he burns in anticipation, if you will, the more his talents are going to show. I think you saw it from game one to game two. It's reasonable to expect that to continue." Comparing Johnson's preseason Week 1 outing to Week 2, it's easy to see the third-round rookie looked far more comfortable in his second appearance — where his fantastic vision and cuts were on full display throughout his 50-yard rushing performance last Saturday. Fans will have one last opportunity to catch Johnson in preseason action when the Steelers head to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. ET — which fans can learn more about here. Dolphins host 3 offensive linemen for tryouts
The Miami Dolphins hosted three offensive linemen for tryouts Monday, according to the NFL's daily transaction report. Undrafted rookies Elijah Ellis and Ozzie Hutchinson, along with third-year guard Mason Taylor spent the day in Miami. Ellis and Hutchinson joined the Los Angeles Chargers and Baltimore Ravens earlier this year after they weren't picked in the 2025 NFL draft, but both were waived in training camp. Taylor, 25, spent his rookie year with the Washington Commanders and had stints on the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts practice squads in 2024. Earlier this year he played for the UFL's DC Defenders. The Dolphins are dealing with a few injuries along the offensive line with starting right tackle Austin Jackson currently sidelined along with backups Liam Eichenberg and Andrew Meyer. While head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Monday that he remains convinced Jackson will be ready for Week 1, depth is thin behind the starting group. Miami also reportedly brought in four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon on a visit with the intention of adding him to the roster, although he didn't appear on the transaction wire.
