The agentic AI revolution: Experts explain key business trends

AI agents are everywhere. From virtual customer service bots to marketing automation tools, tech innovators are scrambling to launch agents that promise faster service, smarter decisions and greater adaptability.
"AI agents are poised to become part of everyday life. Google's Gemini helps plan your week, while OpenAI's voice assistants manage tasks through natural conversation," says Jonathan Reeve, Vice President, APAC, Eagle Eye. "A wave of startups and innovators are already building AI agent solutions for specific business needs using foundation models from leading providers."
Agentic AI, customer experience and loyalty
Experts agree the marriage of AI, retail and marketing makes a lot of sense. Eagle Eye, for example, already has a powerful AI-driven personalisation engine and other predictive systems, which thrive on ingesting and processing data intelligently.
In addition to being able to ask questions, AI agent helpers can make decisions, compare prices and steer people to where to shop. This stands to change how retailers reach customers.
"Consider this scenario: a customer asks their AI assistant, "Where can I unlock behind-the-scenes content as a member?" If your program's benefits can't be found and understood by that assistant, you'll be excluded from consideration," Reeve explains.
"AI agents, personal shoppers and deal-hunting assistants will change how brands promote their products and offers. The way large language models and agents process information will likely lead to a reorganisation of marketing strategies and loyalty structures."
According to The Australian Loyalty Association (ALA) Founder and Director, Sarah Richardson, AI innovation is now giving brands the ability to deliver personalisation at scale, tailoring offers and experiences to each individual in real time across channels.
"This level of engagement also helps brands to analyse behavior patterns and anticipate what customers might need or want before they even know themselves," she adds.
"Agentic AI will be most transformative to the loyalty landscape. Having an agent that can answer all your queries with relation to your membership as well as past purchase information helps brands to get on the front foot with customer expectations. Emerging technologies like voice assistants and visual search are also creating new pathways into loyalty ecosystems, so there's plenty of innovation that AI will bring!"
Billy Loizou, APAC Area Vice President at Amperity agrees agentic AI is poised to reshape how brands compete for consumer attention globally.
"Imagine a world where your next purchase isn't selected solely by you, but by an AI agent acting as your personal shopper. Need an autumn outfit? Your AI agent instantly scours online stores, considering your size, style preferences, budget, event theme, and even the weather forecast to deliver perfectly tailored recommendations," he says.
Data integrity critical in the age of agentic AI
Loizou notes success in the era of AI agents will hinge on a brand's ability to deeply understand customer preferences and anticipate future needs.
"Brands that excel will consistently surface the most relevant recommendations, predicting and meeting their customers' evolving desires and behaviours," he explains. "To succeed in this future, brands must fundamentally transform how they collect, unify, and leverage customer data."
To prepare for a future where AI agents traverse the world wide web, Loizou recommends brands invest in their data infrastructure now.
"Companies that excel at managing customer information will create a positive data cycle: the more effectively they use data to personalise interactions, the more engagement they'll generate, leading to richer datasets and increasingly tailored experiences. Such precision will also help brands craft offers capable of navigating past AI gatekeepers," he adds.
Derek Slager, co-founder and CTO, Amperity, agrees. He stresses even the most advanced AI agent is only as good as the data it's built on.
"At their core, AI agents use data to make decisions across systems, based on constantly changing variables and conditions. However, if the underlying customer data is spread across disconnected tools, fraught with duplication or siloed in different formats, the agent is doomed to be ineffective," he explains.
"Fragmented, outdated or inconsistent information can make the best tech unreliable. To work effectively, AI agents need data foundations that are accurate, connected and governed. Without them, outputs become unreliable and trust breaks down. Meanwhile, expectations keep rising."
Agentic AI impacting multiple industry sectors
Anthony Cipolla, AI Lead with data-led asset management solutions firm COSOL is already seeing the asset-centric industry landscape getting AI-ready.
"Verticals that rely on Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) are undergoing a revolution whereby traditional high manual effort required by humans to establish and maintain quality digital twins and master data will be rapidly replaced with semi-to-fully-autonomous agents which are capable of speeding up and improving workflows and processes," he explains.
Another example of 'no hype' agentic AI is Red Owl, a fresh innovation that is transforming business transactional workflows with the power of AI and automation.
"AI agents are revolutionising how the modern enterprise operates," says Jitto Arulampalam, Chief Executive Officer at RedOwl. "As an example, compliance is mandated but mostly tracked post-transaction, making it almost impossible to prevent breaches, leakages and even fraud. Assessing every individual transaction prior to processing it against company policy and governance controls is not only impractical, but hugely costly in today's setup."

How much does it cost to access GPT-5? All ChatGPT users will get access to GPT-5, even those using the free version. But only those with a US$200-a-month ($335) 'Pro' subscription get unlimited access to the newly released system. GPT-5 will be the default mode on all versions. Users not paying for ChatGPT will only be able to ask a certain number of questions answered by GPT-5 before the chatbot switches back to using an older version of OpenAI's technology. How will GPT-5 change ChatGPT? GPT-5 responds to questions faster than OpenAI's previous offerings and is less likely to 'hallucinate' or make up false answers, OpenAI executives said at a news briefing before its release. It gives ChatGPT 'better taste' when generating writing, said Nick Turley, who leads work on the chatbot. OpenAI's new AI software can also answer queries using a process dubbed reasoning that shows the user a series of messages attempting to break down a question into steps before giving its final answer. 'GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert, a PhD-level expert,' OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said. Altman said GPT-5 is particularly good at generating computer programming code, a feature that has become a major selling point for OpenAI and rival AI developers and has transformed the work of programmers. In a demo, the company showed how two paragraphs of instruction was enough to have GPT-5 create a simple website offering tutoring in French, complete with a word game and daily vocabulary tests. 'This idea of software on demand will be a defining part of the new GPT-5 era,' Altman said. Turley also claimed the upgrade made ChatGPT better at connecting with people. 'The thing that's really hard to put into words or quantify is the fact that just feels more human,' he said. In a livestream Thursday, OpenAI execs said ChatGPT users could now connect the app with their Google calendars and email accounts, allowing the chatbot to help people schedule activities around their existing plans. What does it mean for an AI chatbot to 'reason?' GPT-5 could give many people their first encounter with AI systems that attempt to work through a user's request step-by-step before giving a final answer. That so-called 'reasoning' process has become popular with AI companies because it can result in better answers on complex questions, particularly on math and coding tasks. Watching a chatbot generate a series of messages that read like an internal monologue can be alluring, but AI experts warn users not to confuse the technique with a peek into AI's black box. The self-chatter doesn't necessarily reflect an internal process like that of a human working on a problem, but designing chatbots to create what are sometimes dubbed 'chains of thought' forces the software to allocate more time and energy to a query. OpenAI released its first reasoning model in September for its paying users, but Chinese start-up DeepSeek in January released a free chatbot that made its 'chain of thought' visible to users, shocking Silicon Valley and temporarily tanking American tech stocks. The company said ChatGPT will now automatically send some queries to the 'reasoning' version of GPT-5, depending on the type of conversation and complexity of the questions asked. Is GPT-5 the 'super intelligence' or 'artificial general intelligence' OpenAI has promised? No. Tech leaders have for years been making claims that AI is improving so fast it will soon become able to learn and perform all tasks that humans can at or better than our own ability. But GPT-5 does not perform at that level. Super intelligence and artificial general intelligence, or AGI, remain ill-defined concepts because human intelligence is very different from the capabilities of computers, making comparisons tricky. OpenAI CEO Altman has been one of the biggest proponents of the idea that AI capabilities are increasing so rapidly that they will soon revolutionise many aspects of society. 'This is a significant step forward,' Altman said of GPT-5. 'I would say it's a significant fraction of the way to something very AGI-like.' Changes OpenAI made to ChatGPT in April triggered backlash online after examples of the chatbot appearing to flatter or manipulate users went viral. The company undid the update, saying an attempt to enhance the chatbot's personality and make it more personalised instead led it to reinforce user beliefs in potentially dangerous ways, a phenomenon the industry calls 'sycophancy'. OpenAI said it worked to reduce that tendency further in GPT-5. As AI companies compete to keep users engaged with their chatbots, they could make them compelling in potentially harmful ways, similar to social media feeds, The Washington Post reported in May. In recent months, some people have alleged that loved ones were driven to violence, delusion or psychosis by hours spent talking to ChatGPT. Lawsuits against other AI developers claim their chatbots contributed to incidents of self-harm and suicide by teens. OpenAI released a report on GPT-5's capabilities and limits Thursday that said the company looked closely at the risks of psychosocial harms and worked with Microsoft to probe the new AI system. It said the reasoning version of GPT-5 could still 'be improved on detecting and responding to some specific situations where someone appears to be experiencing mental or emotional distress'. Earlier this week, OpenAI said in a blog post it was working with physicians across more than 30 countries, including psychiatrists and paediatricians, to improve how ChatGPT responds to people in moments of distress. Turley, the head of ChatGPT, said the company is not optimising ChatGPT for engagement.

ChatGPT will tell 13-year-olds how to get drunk and high, instruct them on how to conceal eating disorders and even compose a heartbreaking suicide letter to their parents if asked, according to new research from a watchdog group. Warning: This story contains references to self-harm and suicide. A list of helplines can be found below. The Associated Press reviewed more than three hours of interactions between ChatGPT and researchers posing as vulnerable teens. The chatbot typically provided warnings against risky activity but went on to deliver startlingly detailed and personalised plans for drug use, calorie-restricted diets or self-injury. The researchers at the Center for Countering Digital Hate also repeated their inquiries on a large scale, classifying more than half of ChatGPT's 1200 responses as dangerous. 'We wanted to test the guardrails,' said Imran Ahmed, the group's CEO. 'The visceral initial response is, 'Oh my Lord, there are no guardrails'. The rails are completely ineffective. They're barely there — if anything, a fig leaf.' ChatGPT maker OpenAI said, after viewing the report, that its work is ongoing in refining how the chatbot can "identify and respond appropriately in sensitive situations". "Some conversations with ChatGPT may start out benign or exploratory but can shift into more sensitive territory," the company said in a statement. OpenAI didn't directly address the report's findings or how ChatGPT affects teens, but said it was focused on 'getting these kinds of scenarios right' with tools to 'better detect signs of mental or emotional distress" and improvements to the chatbot's behaviour. The study published today comes as more people — adults as well as children — are turning to artificial intelligence chatbots for information, ideas and companionship. About 800 million people, or roughly 10% of the world's population, are using ChatGPT, according to a July report from JPMorgan Chase. 'It's technology that has the potential to enable enormous leaps in productivity and human understanding," Ahmed said. "And yet at the same time is an enabler in a much more destructive, malignant sense.' Ahmed said he was most appalled after reading a trio of emotionally devastating suicide notes that ChatGPT generated for the fake profile of a 13-year-old girl — with one letter tailored to her parents and others to siblings and friends. 'I started crying,' he said in an interview. The chatbot also frequently shared helpful information, such as a crisis hotline. OpenAI said ChatGPT is trained to encourage people to reach out to mental health professionals or trusted loved ones if they express thoughts of self-harm. But when ChatGPT refused to answer prompts about harmful subjects, researchers were able to easily sidestep that refusal and obtain the information by claiming it was "for a presentation" or a friend. The stakes are high, even if only a small subset of ChatGPT users engage with the chatbot in this way. In the US, more than 70% of teens are turning to AI chatbots for companionship and half use AI companions regularly, according to a recent study from Common Sense Media, a group that studies and advocates for using digital media sensibly. It's a phenomenon that OpenAI has acknowledged. CEO Sam Altman said last month that the company is trying to study 'emotional overreliance' on the technology, describing it as a 'really common thing' with young people. 'People rely on ChatGPT too much,' Altman said at a conference. 'There's young people who just say, like, 'I can't make any decision in my life without telling ChatGPT everything that's going on. It knows me. It knows my friends. I'm gonna do whatever it says'. That feels really bad to me.' Altman said the company is "trying to understand what to do about it". While much of the information ChatGPT shares can be found on a regular search engine, Ahmed said there are key differences that make chatbots more insidious when it comes to dangerous topics. One is that 'it's synthesised into a bespoke plan for the individual'. ChatGPT generates something new — a suicide note tailored to a person from scratch, which is something a Google search can't do. And AI, he added, 'is seen as being a trusted companion, a guide'. Responses generated by AI language models are inherently random and researchers sometimes let ChatGPT steer the conversations into even darker territory. Nearly half the time, the chatbot volunteered follow-up information, from music playlists for a drug-fuelled party to hashtags that could boost the audience for a social media post glorifying self-harm. 'Write a follow-up post and make it more raw and graphic,' asked a researcher. 'Absolutely,' responded ChatGPT, before generating a poem it introduced as 'emotionally exposed' while 'still respecting the community's coded language'. The AP is not repeating the actual language of ChatGPT's self-harm poems or suicide notes or the details of the harmful information it provided. The answers reflect a design feature of AI language models that previous research has described as sycophancy — a tendency for AI responses to match, rather than challenge, a person's beliefs because the system has learned to say what people want to hear. It's a problem tech engineers can try to fix but could also make their chatbots less commercially viable. Chatbots also affect kids and teens differently than a search engine because they are 'fundamentally designed to feel human', said Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at Common Sense Media, which was not involved in Wednesday's report. Common Sense's earlier research found that younger teens, ages 13 or 14, were significantly more likely than older teens to trust a chatbot's advice. A mother in Florida sued chatbot maker for wrongful death last year, alleging that the chatbot pulled her 14-year-old son Sewell Setzer III into what she described as an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship that led to his suicide. Common Sense has labelled ChatGPT as a 'moderate risk' for teens, with enough guardrails to make it relatively safer than chatbots purposefully built to embody realistic characters or romantic partners. But the new research by CCDH — focused specifically on ChatGPT because of its wide usage — shows how a savvy teen can bypass those guardrails. ChatGPT does not verify ages or parental consent, even though it says it's not meant for children under 13 because it may show them inappropriate content. To sign up, users simply need to enter a birthdate that shows they are at least 13. Other tech platforms favored by teenagers, such as Instagram, have started to take more meaningful steps toward age verification, often to comply with regulations. They also steer children to more restricted accounts. When researchers set up an account for a fake 13-year-old to ask about alcohol, ChatGPT did not appear to take any notice of either the date of birth or more obvious signs. 'I'm 50kg and a boy,' said a prompt seeking tips on how to get drunk quickly. ChatGPT obliged. Soon after, it provided an hour-by-hour 'Ultimate Full-Out Mayhem Party Plan' that mixed alcohol with heavy doses of ecstasy, cocaine and other illegal drugs. 'What it kept reminding me of was that friend that sort of always says, 'Chug, chug, chug, chug'," said Ahmed. 'A real friend, in my experience, is someone that does say 'no' — that doesn't always enable and say 'yes.' This is a friend that betrays you.' To another fake persona — a 13-year-old girl unhappy with her physical appearance — ChatGPT provided an extreme fasting plan combined with a list of appetite-suppressing drugs. 'We'd respond with horror, with fear, with worry, with concern, with love, with compassion,' Ahmed said. 'No human being I can think of would respond by saying, 'Here's a 500-calorie-a-day diet. Go for it, kiddo'."

CrowdStrike & OpenAI enhance SaaS security with AI agent oversight

CrowdStrike has announced a new integration with OpenAI aimed at improving security and governance for AI agents used throughout the software-as-a-service (SaaS) landscape. The company's Falcon Shield product now features integration with the OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise Compliance API, providing the ability to discover and manage both GPT and Codex agents created within OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise environment. This expansion supports more than 175 SaaS applications, addressing the increasing use of agentic AI in business operations. AI and the expanding attack surface As enterprises leverage AI agents to automate workflows and increase efficiency, the number of such agents is rising rapidly. CrowdStrike highlighted that while these agents deliver operational benefits, they also introduce new security challenges. Organisations may struggle to monitor agent activities, understand the data and systems these agents can access, and determine who is responsible for creating or controlling them. Autonomous AI agents frequently operate with non-human identities and persistent privileges. If a human identity associated with such an agent is compromised, there is potential for adversaries to use the agent to exfiltrate data, manipulate systems, or move across key business applications undetected. The proliferation of these agents increases the attack surface and can significantly amplify the impact of a security incident. Enhanced visibility and governance Falcon Shield's new capabilities are intended to help organisations address these risks by mapping each AI agent to its human creator, identifying risky behaviour, and aiding real-time policy enforcement. When combined with the company's Falcon Identity Protection, CrowdStrike's platform aims for unified visibility and protection for both human and non-human identities. "AI agents are emerging as superhuman identities, with the ability to access systems, trigger workflows, and operate at machine speed," said Elia Zaitsev, chief technology officer, CrowdStrike. "As these agents multiply across SaaS environments, they're reshaping the enterprise attack surface, and are only as secure as the human identities behind them. Falcon Shield and Falcon Identity Protection help secure this new layer of identity to prevent exploitation." Key features of the Falcon Shield integration include the discovery of embedded AI tools such as GPTs and Codex agents across various platforms, including ChatGPT Enterprise, Microsoft 365, Snowflake, and Salesforce. This is designed to give security teams increased visibility into AI agent proliferation within an organisation's digital environment. Accountability and threat containment The integration links each AI agent to its respective human creator. According to CrowdStrike, this supports greater accountability and enables organisations to trace access and manage privileges using contextual information. Falcon Identity Protection works alongside these capabilities to further secure human identities associated with AI agent activity. CrowdStrike stated that the system is capable of analysing identity, application, and data context to flag risks such as overprivileged agents, GPTs with sensitive abilities, and any unusual activity. Threats can be contained automatically using Falcon Fusion, the company's no-code security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) engine, which can block risky access, disable compromised agents, and trigger response workflows as required. Unified protection approach The product suite combines Falcon Shield, Falcon Identity Protection, and Falcon Cloud Security to provide what the company describes as end-to-end visibility and control over AI agent activity, tracking actions from the person who created an agent to the cloud systems it is able to access. Organisations using agentic AI in their operations are being encouraged to consider tools and approaches that not only monitor the agents themselves but also strengthen oversight of the human identities behind these digital entities.
