MSIL to revamp chit fund biz through app, eyes Rs 10K-cr mkt
Bengaluru: Karnataka govt is revamping Mysore Sales International Ltd's (MSIL) chit fund operations aiming to generate up to Rs 10,000 crore annually in a move that seeks to formalise and scale up the state's presence in the informal savings market.
Industries minister MB Patil held a meeting with MSIL officials late Tuesday evening to chart a new course for the state-owned entity. "The present chit fund business is roughly Rs 500 crore annually, while Kerala has an annual turnover of Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 70,000 crore. Karnataka's aim is to increase the business to Rs 10,000 crore," said an industries department official present at the meeting.
To drive this transformation, the state will launch a mobile app and build a dedicated agent network to bring formal structure and transparency to the chit fund operations.

MSIL managing director Manoj Kumar said the initiative will make chit funds safe, secure and accessible to all sections of society. "While MSIL was in the chit fund business for over two decades, it is only known to be a supplier of liquor in the state. Now, we're revamping our brand and opening MSIL chit funds, which will have a corpus of anywhere between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1 crore," he said.
Kumar said the mobile app — already tested — is ready for rollout.

It will allow members to manage subscriptions, track payments and handle accounts. "MSIL managed as much as Rs 500 crore through books till recently. Now, with the mobile application being developed, we expect it to be seamless and secure through digital transactions," he added.
To extend its reach, MSIL will recruit agents at district and taluk levels. "We are considering enrolling retired bankers at the district levels to act as the foramen of the chit fund business and deploy agents with the incentive, apart from a 5% commission," Kumar said.
Among the products planned is flagship Micro Chits, aimed at serving financially excluded sections of society. "The revamp is to ensure there is financial inclusion of those who cannot approach banks for credit or savings. In an unstable market, the Karnataka govt is leveraging its name for the chit funds to be floated by MSIL," said Patil.
The state hopes that by bringing legitimacy and digital infrastructure to the chit fund space, MSIL can become a trusted financial platform — moving far beyond its liquor-retailing legacy.

Cognizant's investment will fuel regional growth: Lokesh
Vijayawada: Information Technology Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday said that IT major Cognizant would establish a major campus in Visakhapatnam with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore. This investment will accelerate regional growth, he added. The company, which will develop its campus on a 22-acre site at Kapuluppada IT Hills in three phases, is expected to generate 8,000 jobs. Lokesh said the government approved the project to position Andhra Pradesh as a global technology hub and promote digital skilling in tier-2 cities. "We welcome Cognizant to Vizag. This investment will accelerate regional growth and future-ready workforce development," the IT Minister said. Cognizant's presence is expected to boost the regional digital economy, enhance tech skills, and benefit from Andhra Pradesh's infrastructure, business-friendly policies, and IT and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITeS) sectors' support, he added. Cognizant will begin operations by early 2026 from a temporary facility for 800 staff until Phase-I of the permanent campus is ready by early 2029. "We are proud to expand in the port city and thank the government for its progressive support," said Cognizant CEO S Ravi Kumar in a statement. Kumar said the city offers abundant talent and strong infrastructure, fitting into the firm's broader strategy of investing in high-potential regional locations. ‘A double blow': Imports of dry fruits hit, traders in Khari Baoli tackle challenges
Also by Shreyashi Gupta The traders in Khari Baoli in Old Delhi, one of India's oldest markets, stare at uncertain times. The imports of dry fruits from Iran have been hit amid escalating geopolitical conflict in West Asia. This latest blow comes at a time merchants are navigating a setback triggered by the closure of the Attari-Wagah border following tensions between India and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Sharing his plight, Sudhir Jaggi, President of the Sarve Vyapar Mandal of the Khari Baoli market, said, 'First, the Attari-Wagah border was shut down… so goods from Afghanistan completely stopped coming in. And on top of that, this issue with Iran has happened — it's like a double blow. We have no idea what's going to happen next. The Afghanistan route has been shut for a while, and there's still no clarity. ' He added that the market is deprived of new foreign stock of dry fruits. 'Abhi to maal nahi aa raha, jo maal India mein tha wahi bik raha hai. Iran se dry fruits container se maal aata hai sea se, seedhe ports aur phir humare godowns mein utaarte hai, uske baad hum apni requirements ke hisaab se uska distribution karte hai. Abhi maal to kahi se bhi nahi aa raha (Right now, no new stock is coming in — only what's already in India is being sold. Dry fruits from Iran come by sea, directly to the ports, and then to our godowns. From there, we distribute it as per our requirements. At the moment, nothing is coming in from anywhere),' he said. The heightened tensions in West Asia have contributed to a surge in the prices of dry fruit imported from Iran. Jaggi highlighted that almond prices have increased by Rs 400-450 per kilo, whereas pistachio prices have increased by Rs 300 per kilo and now stand at over Rs 1,000 per kilo. Hari Om, a trader, said, 'Varieties of dates like Kimia, Mariam, Zahedi, Rabbi, and Irani, which are imported from Iran, are witnessing a surge in prices in the market.' Kimia Date boxes, which were earlier priced at Rs. 250 per kilo, are now being sold at Rs 400 per kilo, in the market. 'Even some medicinal herbs like Salam Mishri used in Ayurveda medicines are imported from Iran, and their price has also significantly increased,' said Sunny Kashyap, a trader selling dry fruits and medicinal herbs. Commenting on the crisis, Chandni Chowk MP and BJP leader Praveen Khandelwal said, 'The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has naturally had an impact on traders in the Khari Baoli market. Prices of dates, saffron, and other spices imported from Iran may likely rise due to disrupted supply chains and increased freight costs.' He added that the government is taking all necessary steps to keep a check on the prices. Despite the setback, Rajan Bhargava, president, Khari Baoli Traders' Association, remains optimistic. 'There was a slight impact on the goods that used to come directly from Iran, but there was already stock here. Now that the war is set to end, the supply will hopefully resume,' he said.
