3 new flights take off from Memphis airport in September: Here is where they'll take you

Yahoo2 days ago
A new month will bring new flights to Memphis International Airport.
New routes to Knoxville, New York City and Pensacola, Florida, will launch in September at the airport.
The three new flights are expected to bring a boost in passenger numbers to the airport, which has seen a bit of a slowdown, according to Glen Thomas, communications director for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.
'Thus far in August, our TSA checkpoint numbers reflect a slight decrease of about 2.5% compared to the same period in 2024,' Thomas said. 'These numbers are reflective of a softening in recent demand across the industry and across all major airlines. Nonetheless, we continue to meet with airlines in our continual effort to secure additional air service and maintain existing service.'
So far in 2025, Memphis International Airport has announced plans for 10 new flights. Here is a closer look at the new routes coming to the airport in September.
Allegiant Air's Memphis-to-Knoxville flight
Memphis residents traveling to Knoxville soon will have a new way to get there. Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air's service between Memphis International and McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville starts Sept. 4.
The flight from the low-cost air carrier is expected to be a convenient option for University of Tennessee students and alumni in Memphis as it provides an alternative to driving. Kristen Schilling Gonzales, Allegiant's vice president of planning and revenue, told The Commercial Appeal in June that the hope is the Knoxville route will be a reoccurring flight.
'Right now, the service is going through the college football season,' she said. '... We're hopeful that as we see some pickup in the demand, then we'll look at increase frequency on the new route (Knoxville) or with other existing routes we have (at MEM)."

Utah-based, low-cost airline Breeze Airways plans to launch nonstop service between Memphis International Airport and Pensacola International Airport (PNS) on Sept. 5.

Delta's Memphis-to-New York City (JFK) flight
People traveling out of the Bluff City will soon have a new way to get to the Big Apple.
Delta Air Lines will begin daily nonstop service between Memphis International and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City on Sept. 8. The New York City market is the Memphis airport's second largest, with 352 passengers traveling daily each way between the two cities, according to airport officials.
However, the JFK-MEM route won't be year-round. Alex Koehlke of Delta's global communications team told The Commercial Appeal in July that the flight will operate from Sept. 8 through Jan. 4. At that point, the route will pause for winter and resume on May 7, 2026. Koehlke said Delta routinely adjusts its schedule throughout the year to best serve customer demand. In the winter, Koehlke noted demand may be lower, which leads to the temporary pause in service of select markets.

Walmart reports solid sales and profits as tariffs worry some consumers

Walmart Inc. reported increases in second-quarter profits and sales Thursday as it pulls in shoppers seeking low prices for groceries and other essentials to offset worries that new U.S. tariffs may make a variety of goods more expensive. The nation's largest retailer also increased its annual profit and sales outlook. Quarterly results from Walmart and other major U.S. retailers this week offer clues on how consumers are reacting to the possibility of tariff-related price increases. The company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said it earned $7.03 billion, or 88 cents per share, for the three-month period that ended ended July 31. That compares with $4.50 billion, or 56 cents per share, a year ago. Sales rose nearly 5% to $177.4 billion. A growing list of companies, including Procter & Gamble, Cosmetics, Black & Decker and Ralph Lauren, told investors in recent weeks that they planned to or already had raised prices because of tariffs, though modestly. None of that has derailed consumer spending. Shoppers spent at a healthy pace in July, particularly at the nation's auto dealerships, as signs emerged that President Donald Trump's trade policies were taking a toll on jobs. Some of that spending may have been shoppers buying furniture and other imported items to get ahead of expected price increases, analysts said. On Tuesday, Home Depot, the nation's largest home improvement retailer, reported improved sales during its latest quarter as consumers remained focused on smaller projects. Like Walmart, Home Depot's performance missed Wall Street's expectations. The Atlanta-based company also said shoppers should expect modest price increases in some categories as a result of additional costs from tariffs, which are taxes on imports. Target, which has been struggling to reverse a persistent sales malaise, reported another quartely decline in comparable sales and said Wednesday that it would only raise prices as a last resort. Chief Commercial Officer Rick Gomez said shoppers are looking for value and so the discounter would focus more on its store label brands, which tend to be less expensive than national labels. But it's Walmart that serves as a barometer of spending given its outsized power in American retailing. The company maintains that 90% of U.S. households rely on Walmart for a range of products, and more than 150 million customers shop on its website or in its stores every week. Walmart said in May that prices had started to increase in late April and got higher in May. But it said Thursday that it had introduced 7,400 price rollbacks, or temporary discounts, across the aisles in the latest quarter. Walmart's U.S. comparable sales — those from established physical stores and online channels — rose 4.6% in the quarter, slightly higher than the 4.5% gain in the fiscal first quarter. Groceries and health and wellness items fueled the growth, the company said., the company said. Global e-commerce sales rose 25%, above the 22% growth in the fiscal first quarter. Despite Walmart's solid quarter, its stock price was down more than 2% early Thursday as its earnings per share came in below what analysts had expected. Analysts were expecting 73 cents per share on sales of $175.93 billion for the quarter, according to FactSet. Per share results, excluding effects of charges related to certain legal matters and from business restructuring, was 68 cents, Walmart said. The company said Thursday it expects earnings per share to be in the range of 58 cents to 60 cents for the current quarter. Analysts expect 57 cents per share, according to FactSet. For the year, Walmart raised its per-share estimates to a range of $2.52 to $2.62, up from a previous estimate of a $2.50 to $2.60 range. It said 2025 sales are anticipated to increase 3.75% to 4.75%, more than it projected in May. D'Innocenzio writes for the Associated Press.

The Sauber Formula One team has released a statement after a person passed away while live-streaming on its title sponsor, Kick's platform. Raphael Graven, known by the name Jeanpormanove, was popular on the streaming service with over a million followers. However, the 46-year-old was said to have been affected by mental and physiological struggles, and was found dead at his home in Contes, a village north of Nice in the south of France, on August 18th. According to a report by Planet F1, Jeanpormanove's live stream was on its tenth consecutive day when he passed away in his sleep. The authorities have seized his equipment and are analyzing the events that potentially led to his death. The police have also questioned people for further clues, but the actual cause of death is not known yet. The local prosecutor, Damien Martinelli, confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Gabriel Bortoleto of Brazil driving the (5) Kick Sauber C45 Ferrari on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on August 03, 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. Gabriel Bortoleto of Brazil driving the (5) Kick Sauber C45 Ferrari on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on August 03, 2025 in Budapest, partnered with Kick and Stake at the end of 2023, after parting ways with title sponsor Alfa Romeo. The current partnership is set to last until the end of 2025, as Sauber is scheduled to become the Audi F1 team in 2026. The Hinwil-based outfit released a statement after Jeanpormanove's death on the Kick live stream. It read: "We are saddened by this tragedy and trust KICK to take all necessary steps to uphold its safeguards and protect creators." Sauber is forced to undergo a name change for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort due to strict gambling laws in the Netherlands. The country does not permit any form of promotion or branding related to gambling, and as a result, Stake, which is a gambling site, will not be featured on the team's entry at Zandvoort. Therefore, the team's C45 F1 car and the race overalls of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto will sport the Kick Sauber name. Speaking of sponsors, Audi, which has concluded its takeover of the Sauber F1 team, recently announced UK-based fintech company Revolut as the team's title sponsor from 2026. Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG and Chairman of the Board of Sauber Motorsport, said in a statement: "Audi is entering Formula 1 with a clear ambition: to use the platform as a technologically relevant and economically sustainable investment in the future of the Audi brand. "We firmly believe in the success of our project, which we are approaching with a realistic attitude and a mindset of continuous improvement. "In Revolut, we have found a partner that shares our ambitions and attitude. Formula 1 is a global stage that offers us the opportunity to reach new target groups together and generate enthusiasm for our products."
