PETALING JAYA : The RM450 million Miri Marina bridge will help turn the city into the San Francisco of Sarawak, says Abang Johari Openg.
The Sarawak premier said the two-lane cable-stayed bridge would not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea but would reduce travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina to five minutes from the current half an hour.
'This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city's image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,' Abang Johari was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post.
He said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre.
The construction of the 650-metre bridge, styled after the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.
It will take four years to complete.
Separately, the Dayak Daily quoted Abang Johari as saying that the project is expected to boost tourism and the local economy as well as resolve congestion issues.

Tax breaks mooted for companies supporting unity

National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang said cross-sector collaboration is vital to achieve a sustainable and effective unity ecosystem. KUDAT : The national unity ministry will hold discussions with the finance ministry and Inland Revenue Board on the possibility of offering tax breaks to companies that contribute directly to community-level unity efforts. Minister Aaron Ago Dagang said he hoped the move would encourage more corporate entities to support corporate social responsibility programmes that strengthen social harmony. Aaron also called on more NGOs and companies to take an active role in organising community development programmes centred on unity, saying that developing unity was a collective effort involving all citizens, including the corporate sector, civil society and local communities. 'Social integration that directly impacts the well-being of local communities also strengthens the public's confidence in (our) shared responsibility to build the nation's future,' he said. 'In the spirit of Malaysia Madani, this cross-sector collaboration is vital to achieve a sustainable and effective unity ecosystem,' he added when launching the Borneo Unity Ride 2025 Tour here today. The bicycle ride spans 15 days and covers more than 1,500km from Kudat to Teluk Melano in Sarawak.

Malaysia's palm oil stockpiles expected to hit 19-month high

Palm oil stockpiles surged almost 10% from a month earlier to 2.23 million tonnes in July. PETALING JAYA : Palm oil inventories in Malaysia climbed to the highest level since December 2023 as production in the world's second-biggest grower rebounded, according to a Bloomberg survey. Stockpiles surged almost 10% from a month earlier to 2.23 million tonnes in July, a fifth month of gains, the median of 12 estimates in the poll of plantation executives, traders and analysts showed. Estimates of higher supplies in the Southeast Asian nation, coupled with sluggish demand from overseas buyers, could weigh on benchmark prices at a time of the high production cycle, which typically peaks in October. Still, a brighter outlook for purchases from top buyer India ahead of local festivals, as well as robust biodiesel consumption in Indonesia, has cushioned prices recently. Benchmark palm oil futures closed 0.4% higher at RM4,245 a tonne in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. That followed an increase of more than 6% in July – the biggest monthly jump since February. Crude palm oil production last month rose 8.3% to 1.83 million tonnes, the highest level in 11 months, the survey showed. That compared with a decline of 4.5% in June. Exports increased 3.2%, according to the poll. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board will publish its monthly data on Aug 11. 'Stockpiles are expected to rise due to a jump in Malaysian production and lower domestic consumption in July,' said Anilkumar Bagani, head of research at Mumbai-based Sunvin Group. 'Still, a level above 2 million tonnes during the peak production season may not be too 'burdensome to prices', especially when Indonesian palm oil supplies are tight because of high blending rates with petroleum,' he said. More from the survey: Stockpile estimates ranged between 2.09 million and 2.49 million tonnes, while production was seen between 1.7 million and 1.87 million tonnes. Export forecasts were between 1.15 million tonnes and 1.45 million tonnes. Imports were seen at 50,000 tonnes, below 70,015 tonnes in June. Local consumption was between 250,000 tonnes and 450,000 tonnes.

PM: King's Russia visit marks new chapter in bilateral ties

KUALA LUMPUR: The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia from Aug 5-10 marks a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia bilateral ties. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the state visit was expected to strengthen strategic cooperation across various sectors, including bilateral trade, investment, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people relations. "Malaysia is well-positioned to attract new investments and technologies from Russia, particularly in the energy, aerospace, defence and smart agriculture sectors. "This is in line with the Madani Economy framework, which prioritises competitiveness, sustainability and shared prosperity. "More significantly, the state visit underscores the role of the royal institution of Malaysia as a respected driver of national diplomacy on the global stage. "It also reinforces Malaysia's sovereignty and strengthens its image as a neutral, open and progressive nation," he said in a post on his Facebook page. Anwar said the visit was historic and significant, marking Sultan Ibrahim as the first Malaysian head of state undertaking a state visit to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in April 1967. He said it reflected the position of His Majesty as a symbol of national unity, who also plays a strategic role in strengthening Malaysia's international relations. Yesterday, Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia, Datuk Cheong Loon Lai, said that His Majesty's state visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was a recognition of the five decades of diplomatic ties between Russia and Malaysia, which was among the earliest Asean countries to establish ties with the then-Soviet Union. Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday and will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Kremlin on Wednesday, before holding an official meeting with the Russian president and attending a state banquet. His Majesty is also scheduled to visit the Russian Automotive Technology Development Company (NAMI), as well as the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. On Friday, Sultan Ibrahim will travel to Kazan, the fifth largest city in Russia, to receive an audience from the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the Kazan Kremlin. His Majesty is also scheduled to attend a reception ceremony hosted by Minnikhanov and visit the Kazan Helicopter Plant to observe the manufacturing operations of civilian, defence and rescue helicopters.
