KZN holiday traffic builds up on N3 amid heavy rain, flooding warning
The N3TC is reporting a sharp increase in southbound traffic from midday as holidaymakers travel to KwaZulu-Natal.
The eThekwini Metro has been warned of expected heavy rain, flooding, and disrupted bus services, and emergency teams are on high alert.
The N3TC h as urged drivers to stay alert and plan ahead, warning that poor weather could cause delays and congestion along the 415km route.
While eThekwini residents are bracing themselves for severe weather, a significant increase in southbound traffic volumes is expected on the N3 Toll Route from midday as holidaymakers make their way to KwaZulu-Natal.
Although traffic along the 415-kilometre route is flowing freely, the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) and its Road Incident Management System (RIMS) partners are on high alert.
N3TC COO Thania Dhoogra reminded road users to remain cautious and ready for sudden changes in weather or traffic conditions.
Dhoogra warned that rainy weather conditions could lead to delays and congestion - particularly during peak travel times. "Always allow for unforeseen circumstances when planning your road trip."
"Passengers can play a vital role by assisting drivers, serving as an extra pair of eyes, and helping to monitor the surroundings for any potential hazards."
The eThekwini Metro has been warned to expect widespread showers and storms, which are likely to subside on Saturday morning.
As a result, the municipality urged motorists to follow traffic reports.
According to the City, flooded roads include the corner of North Coast Road and Braden Road, M19 / Umngeni Road, under the N2 bridge, M4 next to La Lucia.
Bus services on North Coast Road have also been disrupted as a result of flooding.
"Several bus routes in the north are affected, including in KwaMashu F, J and K sections. Disaster management and emergency teams are activated and are prepared to help where needed. So far, no incidents have been reported around the City. However, teams will continue to monitor the situation," said the City in a statement on Friday.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro will launch its own on-demand microtransit service next month, the City announced in a news release. This comes after the El Paso Transit Authority (ETA) announced that its buses will no longer stop in Socorro, starting July 1. Community meeting highlights end of transit service in Socorro The City of Socorro partnered with The Goodman Corporation to develop a Transit Development Plan (TDP) that focuses on providing transit services in better alignment with the community's needs, according to the news release. The City said the planning process — Socorro ¡Avanzando! — included assessing current transit services and identifying traffic needs and improvement options. The City also engaged people riding ETA's bus routes, community members, families, and stakeholders. The TDP's central recommendation is for the City to launch its own on-demand microtransit service by July 1, with the following features, according to the news release: Operated directly by the City using an existing vehicle fleet and TripMaster software. Service hours: Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — excluding major holidays. Zero-fare service — initially, until demand requires adjustment. Same-day trips, with limited advance reservations. Target wait time: less than 30 minutes for 100 percent of riders. Ability to adapt service as demand and resources evolve. 'Microtransit will offer residents a more accessible, flexible, and responsive transit option compared to the infrequent and hard-to-access fixed-route bus services by ETA,' read the news release. The City said the Socorro ¡Avanzando! TDP is the 'City's independent study of transit's potential in Socorro as a matter of due diligence, to understand how best to improve transit and efficiently utilize limited public resources – to boldly envision 'What could, and should transit be in Socorro?'' In addition, the plan is grounded in the City's recent 2040 Comprehensive Plan process, according to the news release. 'Socorro is a welcoming community that celebrates diversity, preserves its rich culture and history, and fosters economic growth, environmental stewardship, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike. City to begin weeklong 'Pothole Palooza' on Monday
The Santa Fe Public Works Department will conduct its annual, weeklong "Pothole Palooza" beginning Monday. "During this one-week initiative, all Streets Division staff will be fully dedicated to pothole repair, including working overtime shifts to ensure broad and timely coverage," the city announced in a news release this week. "This intensive effort is designed to address high-priority potholes quickly and effectively, especially in light of recent rainfall, which has exacerbated road damage," the release said. Last year's Pothole Palooza led to the repair of more than 1,000 potholes citywide, according to the city. New bus shelters in Prince Rupert enhance local transit experience
Prince Rupert has upgraded its public transit system by installing three new bus shelters at key locations across the city. 'The shelters are located at the Prince Rupert Hospital, the intersection of Kootenay and Mckay Street, and Charles Hays Secondary School, which are all priority locations based on the number of active users and community need in those areas,' said the City of Prince Rupert in a recent press release. The City stated that the new enclosures offer improved protection from the elements, which is much needed in Prince Rupert's rainy climate. They were also designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring wheelchair users can comfortably use the covered space. The City and the BC Transit Shelter Program collaboratively funded the project. The program provides municipalities with access to provincial and federal funding that enables affordable bus stop upgrades for local governments. While the program funds the shelters themselves and the cost of installation, local governments cover the costs of the concrete pads and maintenance of the bus stops. 'The priority of more shelters at bus stops is something that we heard loud and clear from transit users when we did our work on our Transportation Plan, and we're happy to be delivering on that request from the community,' said Mayor Herb Pond. 'We're also grateful to BC Transit for providing grant funds to support this work, and look forward to making continued improvements in the years to come.'
