17 Congress Leaders Join BJP Ahead Of Rahul Gandhi's Visit In Bihar

Just days before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's scheduled visit to Bihar, a major political jolt has hit the party with 17 prominent leaders from Katihar district deserting the Congress and joining the BJP.
The political shift comes with serious allegations against senior Congress leader and six-time MP Tariq Anwar, further deepening the rift within the party and raising questions over Congress's strength in the state.
The dramatic defection was led by Vikas Singh, president of the Congress-affiliated labour organisation INTUC, who accused Tariq Anwar of fostering an "anti-upper caste mentality" in both his actions and rhetoric.
"This is just the beginning. Hundreds and thousands of workers are ready to join the BJP in the coming days," declared Mr Singh while joining the BJP in the presence of Bihar's PHED Minister Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu at a function held in Patna.
According to Mr Singh, the decision of 17 influential upper-caste Congress leaders to switch sides stems from growing resentment against Mr Anwar's alleged bias and attitude.
He alleged that Mr Anwar's working style alienated a large section of upper-caste supporters-an influential voting bloc in Katihar, where caste dynamics often shape electoral outcomes.
The exodus of leaders and simmering caste resentment come at a time when Congress is already facing internal discontent within the INDIA Bloc.
Such developments could erode Tariq Anwar's traditional support base and tarnish his image, especially ahead of assembly elections.
Katihar, long considered a Congress stronghold under Mr Anwar's leadership, now appears to be politically vulnerable.
The upper caste community, which holds significant sway in the region, may now drift away from Congress-a potential electoral liability for the party if not addressed swiftly.
While Tariq Anwar has yet to respond publicly to the allegations, the episode has created a new challenge for his leadership. As a senior figure and national face of the party from Bihar, his credibility and mass appeal are under scrutiny.

Mizoram BJP chief slams govt for ‘misutilisation' of central funds
1 2 Aizawl: Mizoram BJP unit president Vanlalhmuaka on Monday slammed the state govt for not judiciously utilising the funds allocated for implementation of central schemes, resulting in underutilisation of central funds meant for the uplift of marginal sections of the society in the state. Addressing party workers at 'Mipui Run' or Atal Bhavan (BJP office) in Aizawl, Vanlalhmuaka said while some people in Mizoram benefited from the central schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's govt, there are a number of people who have not received full benefits of the schemes due to misutilisation of funds. Making special mention to 'Housing for All', he said a large number of people could not complete the construction of their homes despite receiving funds under the scheme. According to the records maintained by the state rural development & administration (RD&A) department, 25,011 beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) or 'housing for all' out of 29,966 selected families in Mizoram have completed the construction of their homes which is 83.46% as of May 20. RD&A officials said the PMAY-G was launched during 2016-2017 when the fund was released in four instalments and after 2020 the fund was released in three instalments. They said the central govt has given a green signal to continue the PMAY-G til 2028-29 for which 54,588 families have been selected as beneficiaries while it is yet to be known when the fund will be given to them.

Bengaluru stampede: HD Kumaraswamy calls Siddaramaiah ‘Stairs CM', slams him for putting blame on police
Bengaluru: Union minister HD Kumaraswamy trained his guns on chief minister Siddaramaiah , dubbing him the "Stairs CM" (equating to the stairs in front of the secretariat) for his statement that the stampede incident did not occur in front of Vidhana Soudha and was unrelated to him. Kumaraswamy took to X on Monday and questioned whether Siddaramaiah is the chief minister of Karnataka or only for the Vidhana Soudha stairs. He asked how fair it was to wash his hands clean by skirting the blame entirely on police and why there was a desperate ploy to distract by targeting the opposition. Meanwhile, the KPCC criticised the social media campaign in support of the suspended Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda. KPCC spokesperson Ramesh Babu said no one from Dayananda's community requested the CM to appoint him as the commissioner. It was the CM's call as part of his social commitment to taking all the communities together. "The opinion emerging after the suspensions is BJP-driven," he alleged. He questioned BJP for not appointing Dayananda as the commissioner during its tenure though he was eligible for the post. "BJP is playing politics in the name of caste," he claimed.

Bhatti vows caste-based budget allocations
Hyderabad: Riding high on the momentum of social justice following the recent induction of three new ministers, deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday said the Congress govt would aim to allocate funds proportionate to the population of each caste and community in the 2025–26 state budget. Speaking at a public meeting in Khammam during the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Gouda Sangham Bhavan, Bhatti said the next budget would reflect the govt's commitment to social equity by enhancing access to education, employment, and welfare for all communities. "The Congress govt is committed to building an egalitarian society where every section is given equal opportunity. As promised in our manifesto, we conducted a caste census which revealed that BCs constitute 56% of the population," he said. He added that the govt passed 42% reservation bills for BCs in local bodies and govt jobs and had forwarded the proposal to the Centre. "This is a major achievement of the Indiramma govt," he noted. Bhatti also credited Telangana's inclusive policies for inspiring the national discourse. "When Rahul Gandhi began advocating the Telangana model, many laughed. But today, it has become a model for the entire country — this is a victory of Telangana's people," he said. He assured the Goud community that the new building would be completed within a year, alongside a coaching centre for unemployed youth and a statue of Sardar Sarvai Papanna. Earlier in the day, the deputy CM flagged off 45 battery-operated buses at the Suryapet bus stand. He announced that 79 such buses were sanctioned for the depot and that 2,800 more would soon be launched within Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road. Since the launch of the women's free travel scheme, RTC has issued 182 crore zero-fare tickets, with the govt reimbursing ₹6,088 crore, he added.
