Trinamool Lok Sabha Leader Abhishek Banerjee meets with Speaker Om Birla, seeks discussion on SIR
Synopsis After becoming Leader of Lok Sabha for AITC in Parliament, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee has started coordination in the floor of Lok Sabha with Congress in Parliament even as Congress submitted an adjournment motion on disrespect to Bengal and Bengali language - joins the fight with AITC on this issue. ANI Abhishek Banerjee Kolkata: The newly appointed Trinamool Lok Sabha Leader Abhishek Banerjee today met Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi and sought discussion on Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Bridging the distances with the INDIA Bloc prevailing for long, Banerjee said that he will attend the INDIA Bloc's dinner tonight. 'I had a courtesy meeting with the Lok Sabha Speaker. I have told the Speaker that we want the House to function. We have sought a discussion on the SIR. Our MPs have been giving adjournment motions for the past 4-5 days. They have demanded discussions, but the Centre is not allowing it. We have told the Speaker that if required, discuss with the Centre and then allow us to debate on SIR,' Abhishek Banerjee said. 'If the Centre does not have something to hide or fear. Then why are they evading the topic? We want the House to function but the BJP does not want it. They don't have answers, and thus they are evading the issue,' he also stated that he will go for the INDIA bloc becoming Leader of Lok Sabha for AITC in Parliament, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee has started coordination in the floor of Lok Sabha with Congress in Parliament even as Congress submitted an adjournment motion on disrespect to Bengal and Bengali language - joins the fight with AITC on this issue, people in the know said. After Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool National General Secretary said today that the Election Commission of India is doing work which is beyond its jurisdiction. 'The ECI's responsibility begins only when the Model Code of Conduct is in place. When MCC is in place, ECI can take over the State's civil and criminal/police administrative machinery in its own hands to ensure free, fair, and impartial elections. But the work they have started for the past 3–4 months, with elections still 10–11 months away, clearly shows they will not allow an elected government to function. It has been done to give favours and advantages to the BJP,' Abhishek Banerjee is being used to see that real voters are unable to They can inform state government, which has won with huge mandate.'ECI is an impartial & unbiased organization and it has to operate while remaining within the ambit of the Indian Constitution. Yesterday, I saw a residential certificate issued in the name of Donald Trump. You should ask the Chief Election Commissioner why Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on India. Or maybe, when Mr. Trump comes to cast his vote for the Bihar elections, he will be in a suitable position to answer this question,' Banerjee pointed BJP, Banerjee said, 'The Bengal government, which has been voted to power by 12 crore people in 2021, is answerable only to the people and not to any political party or the Centre. Bill aimed at boosting coastal shipping gets Parliament's nod
The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, aimed at boosting domestic participation in maritime trade, got parliamentary approval on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha cleared it through voice vote amid continued protests by opposition lawmakers demanding a discussion on the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The legislation, passed by the Lok Sabha on 3 April, will now go for the Presidential assent to become a law. The Coastal Shipping Bill aims to regulate vessels moving along the Indian coast and eases compliance for domestic ships as the country looks to ensure supply-chain security. The Bill will consolidate and amend the law relating to the regulation of coastal shipping, promote coastal trade and encourage domestic participation. It will also ensure that the country's fleet of coastal ships grows and coastal shipping picks up. Replying to a debate on the Bill, Union minister of ports, shipping, and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the Bill is a major reform initiative by the government that will unlock the full potential of the country's vast and strategic coastline. The ministry targets increasing coastal cargo traffic to 230 million metric tonnes by 2030. Under the legislation, coastal waters mean the territorial waters of India, along with adjoining maritime zones. Territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles from the coast (about 22km). The adjoining maritime zones extend up to 200 nautical miles (about 370km). The Bill seeks to regulate all types of vessels, including ships, boats, sailing vessels, and mobile offshore drilling units, whether self-propelled or not. It does away with licences for Indian-owned ships. The Bill requires the Union government to prepare a National Coastal and Inland Shipping Strategic Plan within two years of the commencement of the Act.

In first six month of 2025, over 29,000 die in national highway accidents, more than 50% of last year: Govt data
Accident deaths on national highways this year appear to be on track to exceed the previous year's figure, shows data tabled by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Lok Sabha on Thursday. According to the data, 29,018 people died on national highways in the first six months of this year — this is more than 50% of the total fatalities of last year. National highways in India account for over 30% of road accident deaths, even though they comprise only 2% of the total road network. The data shows 67,933 accidents took place on national highways up to June 2025. In 2024, 53,090 people died in 1,25,873 accidents across national highways. In 2023, 53,630 people died in 1,23,955 accidents. The data is based on information sent by states and Union Territories to the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) portal — a central repository for reporting, managing and analysing road accident data. The total number of road accident deaths in 2023 was more than 1.72 lakh. The Union government has set an ambitious target to halve such deaths by 2030. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the ministry is undertaking both short-term and long-term remedial measures to reduce such deaths. These include road markings, signage installations, crash barriers, raised pavement markers, geometric improvements, junction redesigns, spot widening of carriageways and construction of underpasses or overpasses, among other measures. 'In new NH projects on high density and high speed corridors of NHAI, installation of ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management System) is generally a part of the project. Further, ATMS is also implemented as standalone projects in already constructed important corridors. ATMS has provisions for various electronic enforcement devices which help in speedy identification of incidents on the highway stretches and effectively monitor the highways, thereby improving the response time of the on-site assistance,' said Gadkari while responding to a question by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya. The government has identified road engineering as one of the biggest factors of accident deaths. Over the last few months, Gadkari himself has been critical about consultants involved in road designing and construction. In a speech in March, he said road accidents and fatalities in India are increasing because of poor civil engineers, consultants, concessionaires and substandard detailed project reports (DPRs). The ministry recently initiated a process to change the selection parameters for consultants for the preparation of DPRs.
