State to recruit 540 forest Guards, equal compensation for wildlife victims: Khandre
Bengaluru: To address staff shortages in the Forest Department, the government has already appointed 310 forest watchers and is now in the process of recruiting 540 forest guards, announced Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar B Khandre in the Legislative Council. Responding to a question by MLC S. Keshava Prasad, the minister said that families of those who die due to wildlife attacks—such as elephant or tiger encounters—currently receive a compensation of ₹20 lakh. Victims of snakebite deaths are provided with ₹2 lakh compensation through the Agriculture Department. Khandre noted that Karnataka has witnessed a rise in its wildlife population, leading to more human-wildlife conflicts. To address this, the government has approved a dedicated elephant task force for Dakshina Kannada district, which will be officially notified in two to three days. The 32-member force will be tasked with driving elephants back into forests as well as assisting in capturing rogue elephants. For elephant corridor and habitat conservation, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). A team led by Prof. R. Sukumar has already begun a detailed study. Expressing sorrow over the recent poisoning of a tigress and her four cubs at the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, the minister confirmed that action has been initiated under the Wildlife Protection Act against those responsible. A deputy range forest officer and other officials have been suspended for failing to ensure timely payment of outsourced frontline staff, and an inquiry is ongoing. On tackling elephant-human conflicts, Khandre said the government has prioritized the construction of railway barricades and assured that concerns of people in Ramanagara district would be addressed. Proposals for new elephant camps are also under consideration. He further said the government is aware of the growing menace of monkeys damaging crops and announced that instructions will be issued to capture them.

Minister Khandre performs bhumi puja Bidar district administrative complex
A long-pending demand of the people of Bidar district is finally taking shape, with work commencing on the construction of a state-of-the-art District Administration Complex. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and district in charge Eshwar B. Khandre, along with Minister for Municipal Administration Rahim Khan, performed the foundation puja at the premises of the old Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Khandre recalled that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had laid the foundation stone for the project on April 16 this year. 'On this auspicious day of Krishna Janmashtami, we have performed the rituals to ensure the smooth and obstacle-free completion of this landmark project. In the first phase, eight government office buildings will be constructed, followed by the remaining offices in the second phase,' he said. He added that the government was committed to delivering on its promises. 'A modern stadium will also be developed in the coming days. With Bidar already declared a city corporation, more funds will be channelled for its overall development. The government is determined to build a clean, green and beautiful Bidar. Citizens must also cooperate in making the city plastic-free,' Mr. Khandre noted. Minister Rahim Khan, in his address, said that steps were being taken to provide ₹200 crore in grants to the Bidar city corporation. 'We have urged the Chief Minister to allocate more funds, post an IAS officer and appoint 400 additional staff to strengthen the functioning of the civic body. Along with infrastructure development, efforts are being made to foster peace, trust and harmony among communities,' he said. Shailendra K. Beldale, MLA, urged the contractors to complete the project within the stipulated time while ensuring quality. 'This should be a model building, an architectural landmark of Bidar where people will proudly take selfies,' he remarked. The event was attended by City Municipal Council president Mohammad Ghouse, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma, Zilla Panchayat CEO Girish Badole, Additional DC Shivanand Karale, and PWD Executive Engineer Shivashankar Kamashetti, among others.

Madras High Court orders inspection of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham campus run by Mata Amritanandamayi Math
The Madras High Court has directed the Forest Department officials to inspect the Mata Amritanandamayi Math-run Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a deemed university campus at Ettimadai, located at the foothills of Bouluvampatty ranges of the Western Ghats in Coimbatore district, and find out whether it fully complies with the 17 conditions imposed before granting building permission. A special Division Bench of Justices N. Sathish Kumar and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy directed the jurisdictional District Forest Officer (DFO) to conduct the inspection along with amici curiae T. Mohan, Chevanan Mohan, Rahul Balaji, and M. Santhanaraman on a convenient date to all the parties concerned, and submit a detailed report before the court on or before September 12, 2025. The orders were passed after senior counsel R. Sankaranarayanan, representing the Math, told the court that the institution was fully in compliance of the 17 conditions imposed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force) on January 18, 2024, for converting 12.622 hectares of agricultural dry lands for educational purposes, and that it was also open to any inspection. 'If there are any defects, we will cure it immediately,' the senior counsel said after the High Court in July this year suo motu impleaded the Math as one of the respondents to a public interest litigation (PIL) petition related to the protection of forests and elephant corridors. The Math was impleaded following a complaint that it had erected a two-kilometre-long electric fence, disturbing free movement of elephants. Filing an affidavit on behalf of the Math, its authorised signatory G. Gopakumar, 54, residing on the Ettimadai campus, said: 'We have erected green solar smart fencing in the border areas of our patta (revenue document related to private land ownership) lands by complying with the technical specifications formulated by the Tamil Nadu Power Fences (Registration and Regulation) Rules, 2023.' He pointed out that one of the 17 conditions imposed by the PCCF permits fencing around the lands in conformity with the 2023 Rules. He also asserted that the institution had provided a 150-metre vacant buffer zone between the lands belonging to the institution and the border of the forest areas in order to ensure free movement of all kinds of wild animals, including elephants. 'We have provided three troughs and supply water through pipelines for drinking by forest animals. We ensure the availability of water at all times. We also allow the existing natural stream running through our patta lands without any obstruction or alteration of direction. We grow mainly forest trees which do not attract forest animals,' the affidavit filed by Mr. Gopakumar read. Stating that Mata Amritanandamayi, a spiritual leader fondly called Amma by her followers, firmly believes in showing compassion towards all living beings, the deponent of the affidavit said, she always promotes harmony in nature and insists on protecting plants and animals too. He also stated that the Math runs educational institutions because she believes that education would eradicate poverty.
