Thoothukudi farmers say crops on 1.5K acres wilting, seek water
K Subudurai, Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Sangam Eral Taluk secretary, stated in the petition that the north channel branching off from Srivaikuntam anaicut on the river Thamirabarani has been closed for maintenance works, citing construction of bridges at Kalangudi, Mangalapuram, and Melamangalakurichi.
Moreover, the Public Works Department (PWD) is laying stone blocks on the riversides between the head sluice of Arumugamangalamkulam tank and Kottaikadu village. However, the banana plantation and betel plants grown in 1,500 acres in Eral, Kottaikadu, Lakshmipuram, Valavallan, Korkai, Manalur, Ganapathy Samuthram, Arasankulam, and Selvavinayagapuram villages, directly fed by the north channel, are left dry.
After the onset of Agni Natchathiram, the crops have also begun withering due to the scorching heat.
Subudurai further said that officials are carrying out project works, ignoring the condition of crops directly fed by the channel. Despite there being plenty of water stored in Papanasam dam at 83 feet and Manimutharu dam at 85 feet, crops are withering off without water.
These works can be stopped for two weeks, and the water can be released to save the crops. Also, it is time to release water for Advance kar from April 1 to July 10, which is the sole right of the north and south channel farmers in Thoothukudi.
A few other farmers said that they are yet to recover from the financial losses caused by the December 2023 floods that devastated the Thamirabarani basin. The officials must consider visiting the agriculture fields and recommend for release of water to save the crops.

New Delhi: The Delhi government worked in a 'mission mode' to ensure smooth traffic movement across the city, despite receiving more than average rainfall on Thursday, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma said. According to the government, critical stretches including the AIIMS Flyover, South Extension, Moolchand Underpass, Azad Market Railway Underpass, and New Rohtak Road were swiftly de-watered, minimising disruption to commuters. 'Delhi witnessed significantly improved rainwater response across key city roads, with the PWD clearing major waterlogged areas within two-three hours,' Verma said. Of the city's 45 known waterlogging-prone spots, 35 remained entirely dry, marking a notable improvement in rainwater management. Clear roads were reported at Pul Prahladpur underpass, Mahipalpur Underpass, Minto Bridge, Bijwasan, and others, he added. In central Delhi, at ITO the government said, 'Despite recent improvements, heavy rainfall combined with inflow from MCD drains into PWD drains exceeded carrying capacity.' However, challenges were reported in isolated areas due to ongoing infrastructure issues. 'At the Punjabi Bagh underpass, a broken drain currently under repair led to delays. Drainage upgrades on Rohtak Road are underway and are scheduled for completion by March 2026. Meanwhile, Chattarpur experienced temporary waterlogging as pump operations were hampered by a rain-induced power outage,' Verma said. The PWD minister also pointed to jurisdictional overlaps, citing issues on Rao Tula Ram Road where NHAI-led defence construction has obstructed stormwater flow. 'A Rs 80 crore drainage system, funded by NHAI and expected by year-end, is being constructed to resolve the issue,' the PWD minister said.

Pilibhit–Uttarakhand road stretch swept away by floods
PILIBHIT: A 20–25ft stretch of the Majhola–Sitarganj road, connecting Pilibhit with Uttarakhand, was washed away by floodwaters from the Kailash river on Thursday afternoon, cutting off interstate traffic. The breach, near Birhani village in the district, has hit over 500 students from half a dozen villages who travel daily by school buses to English-medium schools in Sitarganj, Uttarakhand. The spot lies barely 200ft from the main channel of the Kailash, which forms part of the UP–Uttarakhand border. Locals said the same stretch was swept away in floods last year as well. After that, the PWD had built a long culvert using Hume pipes, but it failed to withstand the force of the river's discharge this time. SDM Amaria, Mayank Goswami, said PWD assistant engineer Jaipal Lodhi has been directed to conduct a technical survey and start repairs at the earliest to restore traffic. 'A long-term solution will be decided by PWD engineers, but I will suggest the construction of a bridge here,' he said. Residents said the disruption would also affect farmers and traders. 'Many farmers have shops and businesses in Sitarganj, while others go there for banking, fuel, fertiliser and pesticide needs.
