Thoothukudi farmers say crops on 1.5K acres wilting, seek water
THOOTHUKUDI: Claiming that over 1,500 acres of banana plantation and 100 acres of betel creepers are withering due to soaring heat and inadequate water supply, farmers submitted a petition to Collector K Elambahavath seeking the release of water into the north channel.
K Subudurai, Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Sangam Eral Taluk secretary, stated in the petition that the north channel branching off from Srivaikuntam anaicut on the river Thamirabarani has been closed for maintenance works, citing construction of bridges at Kalangudi, Mangalapuram, and Melamangalakurichi.
Moreover, the Public Works Department (PWD) is laying stone blocks on the riversides between the head sluice of Arumugamangalamkulam tank and Kottaikadu village. However, the banana plantation and betel plants grown in 1,500 acres in Eral, Kottaikadu, Lakshmipuram, Valavallan, Korkai, Manalur, Ganapathy Samuthram, Arasankulam, and Selvavinayagapuram villages, directly fed by the north channel, are left dry.
After the onset of Agni Natchathiram, the crops have also begun withering due to the scorching heat.
Subudurai further said that officials are carrying out project works, ignoring the condition of crops directly fed by the channel. Despite there being plenty of water stored in Papanasam dam at 83 feet and Manimutharu dam at 85 feet, crops are withering off without water.
These works can be stopped for two weeks, and the water can be released to save the crops. Also, it is time to release water for Advance kar from April 1 to July 10, which is the sole right of the north and south channel farmers in Thoothukudi.
A few other farmers said that they are yet to recover from the financial losses caused by the December 2023 floods that devastated the Thamirabarani basin. The officials must consider visiting the agriculture fields and recommend for release of water to save the crops.

With deadline just a week away, agencies race against time to finish desilting work
New Delhi: With the official date of the arrival of the monsoon in the city just three weeks away, Delhi's civic agencies are facing a stiff challenge to complete the cleaning of its drainage system and keep it ready to face heavy showers. Data accessed by TOI revealed that Public Works Department managed to desilt nearly 45% of its 2,146km-long network of drainage systems. The irrigation and flood control department did a little better, with close to 68% of the estimated quantity of silt removed from its drains. Municipal Corporation of Delhi also managed to clean nearly 70% of 800 drains, which are more than four feet in depth. While the deadline for the completion of desilting of drains was May 31, Delhi govt extended it to June 15 after assessing that a lot of work was yet to be completed. Senior Delhi govt officials agreed that meeting the June 15 deadline would also be difficult considering the work left, and departments were now targeting June 25 for completing the work. The official date of the arrival of the monsoon in the city is June 28. Though the Met department earlier predicted that the monsoon might hit Delhi a week before the official date, officials now say that it will be on time. Following the instances of waterlogging along several arterial roads across the capital and even in some prominent residential pockets last year, lieutenant governor VK Saxena inspected some of the prominent drains and directed the agencies concerned to begin the desilting work at a war footing. A senior govt functionary said though the agencies should have completed the tendering process in Jan itself and work should have started immediately, the assembly polls in Feb delayed the process. It was only after the new govt was formed that tenders were floated to engage agencies. Sources said before the new govt took over, LG held a meeting with the departments and directed them to start the exercise. "Tenders were floated immediately after the formation of the govt. Some of the companies took the contract lower than the prevalent rate, but they faced the problem of arranging manpower and machinery. All other govt agencies and the neighbouring states started engaging contractors for desilting work during the same time, which led to a shortage of manpower and machinery, and their rates also skyrocketed," said a senior govt official. On the persistent waterlogging despite desilting work, officials said there were several reasons for that. While the existing drains are not enough to bear the increasing pressure, there is a desperate requirement for implementing a new drainage master plan. There is also a requirement for introducing new technology to clean the portion of the drain below the culvert or main roads constructed over 50 years ago. Govt already engaged consultants to prepare a drainage master plan for the Najafgarh, Barapullah and trans-Yamuna basins, and the reports are expected by June. Even after approval, it will take at least three years to upgrade the city's drainage system of 1976, which allows Delhi to drain only 50mm of rain in a day.

Khandepar govt school kids still under plastic roofs
Ponda: For the second consecutive academic year, students of govt primary school, Khandepar, Ponda, will have to sit in classrooms under plastic sheet roofs after the contractor failed to replace them before the monsoon. 'The contractor must have delayed the work till the end of May, but monsoon arrived early, making the contractor unable to complete the work on time,' said Sitaram Naik, additional district education inspector (ADEI), Ponda. Naik said that at the central zone ADEI meeting held in April at Panaji, education minister Pramod Sawant had directed the PWD to ensure that contractors change the school roof before the new academic year, which began on Wednesday. Besides the roof, the building wall has cracks and weakened wooden rafters. Naik said repairs may be taken up during the Diwali vacation, as they cannot do repairs before then.

Wire mesh at Saptshringi Ghat catches at least seven boulders, says PWD officer
Nashik: The wire mesh installed by the public works department (PWD) on Saptashrungi Ghat in Kalwan taluka prevented at least seven boulder fall incidents. "Unseasonal rain lashed parts of Nashik district, including the Saptashrungi Ghat in Kalwan taluka, in May. Accordingly, the iron wire mesh was installed in the ghat section, and it caught the loose boulders falling on the road below at different places thus avoiding any mishap," said Rohini Vasave, an engineer with the PWD. The wire mesh was installed covering a total length of 1km, with the height of the mountain ranging between 20 to 100 metres. "The work of removing these boulders is being carried out. The mesh has thus prevented at least seven incidents where the boulders would have fallen onto the busy road that connects the temple shrine of Goddess Saptashrungi hill with the base village of Nanduri. The number of boulders could have been more," the officer said. The ghat section is 8km long, with the road winding up to the temple shrine, The section is known for rock falls during the rainy season. The PWD is further carrying out more rock fall protection works along the road, for which filing the proposal with state govt is in process. "What has been covered so far were the most important points. Now we are further ensuring protection at other places as well. The work will be carried out in three phases, with a cost of approximately Rs 200 crore. It will take some time before it happens," the officer said.
