Pilibhit–Uttarakhand road stretch swept away by floods
The breach, near Birhani village in the district, has hit over 500 students from half a dozen villages who travel daily by school buses to English-medium schools in Sitarganj, Uttarakhand. The spot lies barely 200ft from the main channel of the Kailash, which forms part of the UP–Uttarakhand border.
Locals said the same stretch was swept away in floods last year as well. After that, the PWD had built a long culvert using Hume pipes, but it failed to withstand the force of the river's discharge this time.
SDM Amaria, Mayank Goswami, said PWD assistant engineer Jaipal Lodhi has been directed to conduct a technical survey and start repairs at the earliest to restore traffic. 'A long-term solution will be decided by PWD engineers, but I will suggest the construction of a bridge here,' he said.
Residents said the disruption would also affect farmers and traders. 'Many farmers have shops and businesses in Sitarganj, while others go there for banking, fuel, fertiliser and pesticide needs. Now, we will have to travel 30–35km more via Amaria,' said Manjit Singh, a farmer from Bela Pokhra village.

IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai, red for Raigad on Aug 16-17
Mumbai: The IMD on Friday issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane for Aug 16–17, warning of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated spots. Nearby Raigad was put under a red alert for Aug 16, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas. Under its influence, the rainfall activity over Maharashtra is very likely to increase during Aug 15-20, 2025. We have therefore issued an orange alert for Mumbai for Aug 16 and 17, and a red alert in case of Raigad for Aug 16." With Beas river in spate, SDRF teams deployed in Sultanpur Lodhi villages
1 2 Kapurthala: With the Beas river in spate, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in several villages of Sultanpur Lodhi within the Dhusi bundh. The teams have assisted the district administration in delivering dry rations, animal fodder, and drinking water to residents marooned in their homes. Crops spread over thousands of acres along the river have been submerged. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha member Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and his volunteers have begun evacuating residents and delivering relief materials. In previous years, they had similarly assisted locals during floods. Deputy commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal said the SDRF was deployed and kept on alert before the water levels increased. He said a relief centre was also established at Govt School, Lakh Varhian, in the Mand area to support affected residents. Medical teams have been deployed to provide immediate healthcare assistance as needed. Additional deputy commissioner (General) Navneet Kaur Bal has been appointed as the overall in-charge of relief operations and flood prevention measures. She will be stationed at Sultanpur Lodhi to oversee all arrangements, ensuring seamless coordination and execution. Though the district administration has urged residents of low-lying areas to reach safe places, people are not leaving their houses completely and are shifting only the children and women to safe places, mainly with their relatives.
