DC fans have taken the long-running James Gunn's DCU vs. Zack Snyder's DCEU debate to another level, as they argue over who would win in a fight, new Superman David Corenswet or Henry Cavill's Man of Steel.
Warning, this article contains spoilers for Gunn's Superman, so make sure you have seen it before reading on. But first, read our Superman review.
Zack Snyder and James Gunn fans have been head-to-head since the new Superman movie was still announced, with Cavill fans angry that the Man of Steel star wasn't recast as the hero, whilst Corenswet supporters were glad to see a new actor take on the role. Now that Superman has hit screens, both sides of the argument have entered into some rather petty clashes, including this one.
The whole playground-esque squabble started when Twitter user FromSelinaKyle posted, "Cavill's Superman would wipe the floor with Corenswet's Superman," and the replies started rolling in.
However, in the Gunn corner, a lot of fans came to Corenswet's defence, with one pointing out, "He escaped a black hole while half health and holding 3 individuals with his super breath, this feat alone solos Cavill's Superman." However, a Snyder fan clapped back, "Cavill's Superman literally did that. He escaped the Phantom Zone, which is stated to be a Black hole that pulls things into a completely different plane of existence."
Round 2 saw fans debate whether Corenswet's Supes would have bested Ben Affleck's Batman, who notably beat Cavill's hero. "If Batman almost took out Cavill, David and Mr Terrific will mop the floor with him," said one Corenswet-backer, but a Snyder-head replied, "Affleck Batman can beat David Superman in hand-to-hand combat."
However, many Cavill fans have highlighted how the new Superman movie starts with his defeat, putting him in a weaker light straight away. One fan said, "This Superman is pretty weak in comparison." But it is important to note that this was Supes' first loss in his first three years of being Superman, and he was facing a highly intelligent villain in Lex Luthor and his team.
But at the end of the day, there was one voice in this argument who saw the light and said, "Sure, he could beat him in a fight, but he wouldn't do that. They're both the good guys. They'd respect each other like you guys should for them both… Cavill's Supes is still the good guy and would have 0 reason to fight HIMSELF."
Meanwhile, both Gunn and Snyder are seeing the lighter side in fans pitting them against one another. In fact, the two directors even appeared in a recent episode of Rick and Morty playing parodied versions of themselves fighting over who created the best Superman.

'Anti-American sentiment' hurts 'Superman' at the international box office, James Gunn says

The DC Universe movie opened July 11. While the latest Superman has done incredibly well at home — to the tune of $253 million so far — the DC Universe movie hasn't flown quite so high in the rest of the world. Writer-director James Gunn has some theories about why. "Superman is not a known commodity in some places. He is not a big, known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things," Gunn told Rolling Stone this week, after he was asked why superhero films don't seem to be connecting with international audiences the same way they are in the United States. "And it also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn't really helping us." The superhero film starring David Corenswet as the "Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, won the box office in a landslide in its second weekend in theaters. In addition to its staggering domestic haul, the DC Universe pic has raked in $173 million internationally, for a total of over $426 million globally, as of Wednesday, according to President Donald Trump's administration has shaken up the world order by, for instance, withdrawing from treaties or alliances with other countries. Last month, Pew Research Center found that overall views on the country have dimmed in his second term, although it's unclear how that plays into moviegoers' choices. But Gunn was hopeful. "We're definitely performing better domestically than we are internationally, but internationally is also rising and having really good weekday numbers in the same way we are," he said. "So obviously the word of mouth is very positive both here and everywhere else, which is the thing that we needed to do the most. At the same time, there are certain countries in which it's really performing well: Brazil and the U.K."The director of other superhero films, including Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and DC's The Suicide Squad, noted that Superman had already seen a lot of success. He found it "incredibly overwhelming." Gunn, who took over DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in November 2022, is rebooting the DC universe with interconnected movies and TV shows scheduled years out. The duo's master plan — dubbed "Gods and Monsters" — technically started with last year's animated series Creature Commandos on Max. Though the show isn't crucial to the bigger picture, Superman and season 2 of Max original series Peacemaker (premiering Aug. 21) are "both pretty important in terms of getting to the bigger story," Gunn told EW for our June cover feature. The next DCU film queued for release is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as Kal-El's cousin Kara Zor-El, on June 26, 2026, and a Wonder Woman movie is "being written right now," Gunn said. Jurassic World Rebirth devours the competition at weekend box office

The summer tentpole films are rolling out, and as expected, Jurassic World Rebirth had a massive opening over the holiday weekend. The film opened to $91.5 million at the box office, more than three times the amount the runner-up, F1: The Movie, made the same weekend. It's also nearly double F1's opening (the racing film opened to $57 million the week before). Over the course of five days, Jurassic World Rebirth has racked up a respectable $147,304,630, more than F1 has made in its two weeks in theaters. Jurassic is the only debut on the box office charts, and it's off to a good start. However, its five-day total is comparable to what Lilo & Stitch made in its first weekend ($146,016,175; now sitting at the number seven spot, the film has grossed $972,720,147 worldwide and counting). However, Variety notes that Jurassic's numbers are down for the dino franchise. The initial reboot, 2015's Jurassic World, opened to $208 million; 2018's Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom opened to $148 million; and 2022's Jurassic World Dominion opened to $145 million. Those films also all had significantly higher five-day totals than Rebirth, though the downward trend for each suggests that people simply aren't as excited about the prospect of a Jurassic World anymore—perhaps the suspension of disbelief as to why people keep bringing their kids around raging dinosaurs has worn a bit thin. We'll see how Rebirth holds up when Superman flies into theaters this coming weekend. The other notable new entry on last weekend's domestic box office chart is the restored, remastered, and re-released This Is Spinal Tap, which sits at number 10 having made $931,737 in its re-opening weekend. The success has spurred some additional dates tacked on to the limited engagement, with new showtimes on July 7, 8, and 9. In a statement (via Deadline), Bleecker Street Distribution President Kyle Davies said, 'We are thrilled with these early results of our re-release of [Rob Reiner's] original This Is Spinal Tap. While showtimes were limited this weekend, and the initial engagement carries into Monday, we experienced sell-out shows across the country, demonstrating that interest in the world of Spinal Tap still 'goes to 11.' Glad fans and newcomers alike got a taste of these musical legends as we head into the release of Spinal Tap II later this year.' You can check out the full top 10, courtesy Box Office Mojo, below. ‘Peacemaker' Came to Comic-Con to Tease the End of Its Own Universe

The most in-your-face explanation for what's going on with Peacemaker in the new DCU can be found outside of San Diego Comic-Con. Simply put—as soon as you walk in past the HBO Max activation marquee for the Peacemaker 'Peacefest' in the Gaslamp District, you see a sign that reads, 'Relax, it's a state of emergency; you're fucked', dude.' io9 was invited to scope out the space, which allowed for some rocking fun as you walk in through a Quantum Portal into the 'altered dimension' of the Peacemaker universe. Hmm, we suspect Lex Luthor's pocket dimension, and that crack Clark and Mr. Terrific noticed at the end of Superman, might have something to do with this. The timed experience gives you a chance to look at some of the props for the series, which returns August 21 on HBO Max. One of the major things we noticed right away was the giant Mighty Crabjoys poster adorning one of Peacemaker's helmet walls, so we at least get the sense that Superman might not be the only person in their fan club. Which really, lucky for Peacemaker, in case he needs help from Big Red whenever Rick Flagg Sr. finally gets around to revenge. Peacefest also invited con attendees to get their rock show on to the show's theme song with a live band, while stations offered the usual photo-ops, drinks, and some Mortal Kombat stations to celebrate Peacemaker's addition to the roster for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the signs our Peacemaker friends might be in danger was also literally this TV under a 'Lost and Found' sign with an arrow pointing to the show playing on a real fuzzy and deteriorating VHS tape. It was, however, the closing song that gave way to some really distressing spoiler-ish answers. As the show ended, the band left, but Peacemaker sent a message to GTFO while another flashed across his face: 'Warning: Alternate Dimension Collapsing.' We know season 2 is going to be dealing with bridging the gap between the old DCU and DC Studios' post-Superman, canon, but this makes it feel like stakes are going to be very dire as Peacemaker tries to make it over to the new normal in one piece… especially as we know there's going to be some Peacemaker vs. Peacemaker shenanigans as well. We'll find out more at the San Diego Comic-Con panel later this week! Check out the gallery below for more hints and a look inside Peacefest. Stay tuned here at io9 for more SDCC '25 and Peacemaker coverage. Want more io9 news?
