Smart electricity use and time management cut utility bills in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians can significantly reduce their electricity bills by adopting smarter usage habits and leveraging off-peak hours under the newly announced tariff restructuring. The changes, set to take effect from July 1, 2025, aim to promote efficient energy consumption while benefiting over 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia.
Private sector worker Rozita Ibrahim, 38, shared her strategy for cutting costs. 'If you want to save, you have to follow the 'timing'. For example, we do all household chores like washing and ironing clothes during off-peak hours,' she said. The Time of Use (TOU) scheme now extends off-peak periods to weekends and weekdays from 10 pm to 2 pm, encouraging users to shift high-consumption activities to these times.
The Energy Commission (ST) stated that 85% of domestic consumers will see no increase or even lower bills if their monthly usage stays below 1,000 kilowatt hours. An Energy Efficiency Incentive will also reward those who practice prudent electricity use.
For larger families, managing consumption becomes crucial. Joe, a private institution lecturer with eight children, explained his approach. 'I need to teach them about saving money. We complete most chores on weekends when rates are lower and reduce usage on weekdays,' he said. He also plans to install a timer system to automate appliance usage.
Professor Dr Nuradli Ridzwan Shah Mohd Dali from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia suggested solar energy as a long-term solution. 'Expanding solar access for the B40 group could cut consumption by 50 to 100%,' he said.
The new tariff, effective until December 2027, aligns with Malaysia's push for a sustainable energy system under the Incentive-Based Regulation framework.

My50 unlimited travel pass goes digital starting July 1
By FARAH SOLHI MALAYSIANS can subscribe to Prasarana's My50 unlimited travel pass online now through Touch 'n Go e-wallet starting July 1 using their Touch 'n Go card that is equipped with an NFC chip. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that this feature will allow users to renew their pass at their convenience, instead of having to queue for two to three minutes at the counter. 'This digitalisation move is part of the government's ongoing efforts, together with Prasarana, to improve the convenience and public transport users' experience in the country. 'It is in line with the aspiration of digitalising the country's public transport services (in pursuit of) cashless consumption,' he said when officiating the features at a press briefing in KL Sentral today. Despite digitalisation, Loke said those who wish to remain renewing the pass using existing methods by queueing and renewing at Prasarana's ticketing counter, can still do so. He further said that this upgrade is equipped with safety features, given that the My50 passes are only limited to Malaysians. 'Those who wish to renew their pass through Touch 'n Go e-wallet still have to go through the e-KYC process when they want to activate and link their card to the application. 'In few more months, Prasarana and Touch 'n Go will also be introducing a feature where users can track their usage, allowing them to see which stations their card has been tapped in. 'This is to allow users to monitor their pass usage and travels, so that they get to grasp how much they are saving by subscribing to this monthly pass,' he said. Loke added that the travel-tracking features data would only be accessible to users individually as it will be recorded in their personal profile feature in the e-wallet. Public transport, he said, is not just about providing an adequate number of trains or busses but also supporting facilities such as ticketing systems is an important element in providing world-class public transport facilities 'All planning and development of new cities must take into account mobility facilities including an integrated public transport system, adequate and comprehensive pedestrian infrastructure and bus stops. '(Apart from this feature) Prasarana is also looking to expand the digitalisation initiative to other products such as MyCity and MyTourist passes. 'This aims to increase ease of access, reduce dependence on cash transactions and provide a convenient and fast travel experience,' he said. The My50 unlimited travel pass was introduced on December 1, 2018, as part of the then government to promote cashless society.

Exempt mandarin oranges, dates from SST, says PKR MP
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung said small businesses and traders rely on the seasonal demand for fruits like dates to cover operational costs. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung today urged the finance ministry to consider exempting more fruits from the expanded sales and service tax (SST), particularly mandarin oranges and dates. He proposed that special SST exemptions be made for the two fruits during the Chinese New Year and Aidilfitri festive seasons, describing it as a targeted fiscal approach that would be sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of Malaysians. 'These two fruits are inseparable from major Malaysian festive celebrations – Chinese New Year and Ramadan, as well as Hari Raya Aidilfitri. 'Imposing a 5% tax on these fruits not only increases consumers' burden but also contradicts the core principle behind the expanded SST's implementation, which is to only target specific groups,' the PKR MP said in a statement. If the two fruits are not exempted, he said the expanded SST would place even greater pressure on small businesses and traders that rely on the seasonal demand for these fruits to cover operational costs. Lee's call followed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's announcement this morning that imported apples and oranges would be exempted from the expanded SST, which comes into effect on July 1. Although he believed that there was no need to consume imported fruits, Anwar acknowledged that many from among the B40 income group would buy apples and oranges, in part due to their affordability. The finance ministry previously said the expansion of the SST from July 1, including a 5% rate on imported fruits, was aimed at boosting local agricultural demand and strengthening food security. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Targeted RON95 subsidy to be done in stages, says Amir
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan previously said the subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year. PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya will implement the targeted RON95 subsidy this year in stages, taking into consideration the best mechanism to avoid burdening Malaysians, says finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan. Amir said the government was still in the midst of formulating a suitable system to implement the targeted subsidy, and that it would be tabled to the Cabinet once ready, Berita Harian reported. 'The prime minister has already said the targeted RON95 subsidy will be carried out this year. 'But similar to our approach with the targeted diesel subsidy, we need to ensure that we have the right mechanism to implement it so that we don't burden the rakyat. 'Policy-wise, the prime minister has already said the government will ensure that most Malaysians aren't affected by the (targeted) RON95 subsidy,' the minister was quoted as saying. Amir previously said the subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year, although no date was specified. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the cuts would mainly target foreigners and Malaysia's top 5% to 10% of income earners. He said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation was a critical step to ensure that national resources are effectively channelled to benefit the lower-income group. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
