England making Jacob Bethell its youngest ever mens cricket captain at 21
London, Aug 15 (AP) Jacob Bethell will break a record which has stood for 136 years when the 21-year-old allrounder becomes England's youngest ever men's cricket captain next month.
Bethell will lead England against Ireland in three Twenty20s in Dublin.
The previous youngest England captain was Monty Bowden, who was 23 in 1889 when he took charge for a test in South Africa after regular skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill with fever.
Some senior players will be missing in Ireland including usual white-ball captain Harry Brook, who will be in charge of one-day international and T20 games against visiting South Africa earlier in September.
'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said in a statement on Friday.
The captaincy is part of a rapid rise for Bethell, who made his debuts for England in all three formats only last year.
The series in Ireland begins on Sept. 17. (AP) UNG

'No Designated Finisher, All-Format Captain Soon': Gambhir's Roadmap To Transform India
Last Updated: Head coach Gautam Gambhir will focus on T20Is as India prepares for the Asia Cup, aiming to rebrand the team by emphasizing players' skillsets over designated roles. Following a successful England tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir will shift his focus to the T20Is as India's next assignment is the Asia Cup, which begins next month. The shortest format has always been the former opener's strength, both as a player and as a coach, with plenty of facts to back it up. T20 has brought him recognition. A decade ago, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to back-to-back title victories. Last year, he stepped into the mentor's shoes and helped the franchise clinch its third. Even before taking up the role of India's head coach, Gambhir was vocal about the selection of the T20I team based on the IPL performances. As he gears up to guide the men in blue in the Asia Cup and the series against Australia and South Africa, the mentality for team selection seems the same. According to The Times Of India, Gambhir is determined to rebrand the T20 side. As the team has often received criticism for not keeping along with time, Gambhir is believed to address that primarily. 'The chatter in Indian cricket is that he would prefer an all-format captain soon to build a common culture. Gambhir has been very clear with his vision. He walked in with an idea to rebrand the T20 team. India have often been accused of not being able to move with the times in the shortest format. Gambhir has decided to address it with players who can be branded as T20 specialists," the report said. The report further stated that there are no more designated finishers in the dressing room. Instead, the roles are assigned as per the skillset of the players. 'There's no room for getting comfortable. Roles are assigned as per skills, not batting numbers. He is comfortable with this facet of a modern-day T20 cricketer," the report said. 'Shivam Dube, for one, will always get preference since he can go up the order and blast the bowling if the openers get off to great starts. There are no designated finishers," it further read. After the Champions Trophy success and a decent England tour, things seem to be falling in place for Gambhir. The upcoming T20I assignments will be crucial for him, especially when the team looks to defend the T20 World Cup title at home in a few months. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Lionel Messi Strikes On Return Form Injury To Help Inter Miami Down LA Galaxy
Last Updated: Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez were all on target for the Herons, while Joseph Paintsil's lone strike for Galaxy proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Argentine superstar Lionel Messi marked his return to action, following a brief period on the sidelines due to a muscle injury, with a goal and an assist in Inter Miami's 3-1 win over LA Galaxy on Sunday. Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez were all on target for the Herons, while Joseph Paintsil's lone strike for Galaxy proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Messi, who missed his side's previous three outings after picking up an injury during the team's Leagues Cup game against Mexican outfit Necaxa, was brought on as a substitute by head coach Javier Mascherano and went on to make the difference between the sides on the day, as he most often does. 'It had been something very small," Mascherano said of the star man's injury after the match. 'The three training sessions we had were good. The important thing is that the match ended. As the minutes went by, I saw him better. We have to see how he feels tomorrow," the Argentine added. 'We had planned the match to give minutes to Leo. The idea was to give him 45 minutes so that he can find sensations," Mascherano said. 'I didn't see him after the game. Tomorrow we'll see what feelings he had," the 41-year-old said. 'He's an extraordinary player. I saw that he was clearly not 100 percent comfortable but as the minutes went by he was loosening up more and more. We will have to see how he ended with the fatigue." Messi now has 19 goals and 10 assists in 19 MLS appearances for Miami this season. 'He wants to play every single game," Mascherano said. 'You have to understand why Leo is Leo. He always wants to be on the pitch. He's happy there. Sometimes we try to explain him that we have to go slowly but when he feels good he knows himself like no one. In the end we tried to give him some minutes today to start having good feelings for Wednesday." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Messi scores, assists in Inter Miamis 3-1 win over LA Galaxy
Fort Lauderdale (US), Aug 17 (AP) Lionel Messi wouldn't be denied for long. The Argentine superstar had missed numerous scoring chances in his return from injury Saturday night against the LA Galaxy, but in the match's waning minutes, Messi scored the go-ahead goal, then assisted on another to help lift Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory. Messi did not start the match, instead coming on at the beginning of the second half after being sidelined two games with a right hamstring injury. He suffered the injury in Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Aug. 2. Messi slipped through defenders with his trademark dribbling before burying a left-footed shot from distance that made it 2-1 in the 84th minute. He then set up Luis Suárez with a back heel assist to give Miami a two-goal cushion. It was the 19th goal of the season for Messi, who leads MLS, and a needed win for Inter Miami, which moved up to fourth place after slipping to sixth in the East following a 4-1 rout at Orlando last week. Miami coach Javier Mascherano said the team will check in with Messi on Sunday to see how he felt after the game, in regard to the hamstring injury as well as fatigue. There were times during the match that Messi appeared to stretch out his right leg. 'The important thing is that he finished (the match)," Mascherano said through an interpreter, adding that he thought Messi seemed to get more comfortable as the game went on. Jordi Alba put Miami up 1-0 late in the first half on Saturday, finishing a well-placed through ball from Sergio Busquets. Joseph Paintsil tied it in the 59th for the Galaxy, who are the defending MLS Cup champions but are currently last in the Western Conference standings.
