KOLKATA: As the referee blew the final whistle, East Bengal players dropped to the ground one after another. This time around, in delight. As Oscar Bruzon made his way to the Mohun Bagan SG bench for a customary handshake with his opposite Jose Molina, the table was turned by then, and how.
East Bengal rode a brace from Dimitrios Diamantakos to down
Mohun Bagan
2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday, storming into the Durand Cup semis and ending the green-and-maroon brigade's long reign at the venue. Coming off the bench in the 19th minute following in-form striker Hamid Ahadad's early injury, Diamantakos set the tempo by converting a penalty in the 38th minute.

The Greek forward made it 2-0 seven minutes after the break.
Anirudh Thapa reduced the margin to 1-2 in the 68th minute.
Bruzon's side handed Bagan their first defeat at the venue in 19 matches. The win — which came 22 days after a 3-2 win in the CFL Premier Division — was also East Bengal's first in a 'senior' derby in six matches since they had got the better of the arch rivals, also in the Durand Cup on Aug 12 in 2023.
In the Durand Cup semifinal on Wednesday, East Bengal will take on another city side Diamond Harbour FC, who defeated Jamshedpur FC 2-0.

What does Joe Flacco's Week 1 starting QB role mean for Shedeur Sanders and Cleveland Browns' quarterback future?

Cleveland Browns' quarterback drama unfolds as Joe Flacco wins starting job over rookie sensation Shedeur Sanders (Getty Images) The Cleveland Browns made their quarterback decision official on Monday, handing the Week 1 starting job to 40-year-old Joe Flacco. The move brought immediate intrigue—not only because Flacco is 17 years older than Shedeur Sanders, but also because it reshapes the Browns' preseason quarterback competition. While Kevin Stefanski's call settles the biggest storyline of training camp, it also sparks new questions about the future of the team's quarterback room. Cleveland Browns turn to Joe Flacco as veteran leader Joe Flacco, who went 4-1 with the Browns last season while guiding them to a playoff berth, now becomes just the 11th quarterback in NFL history to start a Week 1 game at age 40 or older. His consistency stood out in training camp, where he was the only quarterback to avoid time on the sidelines due to injury. 'Well, we all know how that works. I mean, that's everybody in the league, but it's not really my job to look at it in that way. It's just to go out there and play my game,' Flacco said. 'I felt like I was having a good camp with the reps that I was given, and that's all you can do.' Stefanski praised the veteran's command and impact, noting that the decision went well beyond health. 'Joe performed really well, both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Donating Sperm May Boost Your Income SpellRock Undo What he's able to bring to the football team, he's earned that role,' the Browns head coach explained. Shedeur Sanders and Browns' depth chart uncertainty While Flacco's appointment solves one problem, it creates another: who will back him up? Kenny Pickett is still managing a hamstring strain but has resumed 11-on-11 reps. Dillon Gabriel, the 2025 third-round pick, continues to push for snaps. Meanwhile, Sanders—despite impressing with his professionalism since falling to the fifth round—remains limited with an oblique injury. That leaves the Browns in a rare position. General manager Andrew Berry must soon decide whether to keep four quarterbacks, something that has only occurred five times since 2000, according to Sportradar. Flacco and the first-team offense will see preseason action against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, a dress rehearsal designed to simulate regular-season game planning. For now, the veteran holds the reins, but the pressure behind him is undeniable. Sanders, Pickett, and Gabriel may still shape Cleveland's quarterback narrative in 2025—and beyond. 'Axar Patel deserves an explanation for removal from vice-captaincy': Ex-India star slams decision

Axar Patel (BCCI Photo) NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer and commentator Mohammad Kaif has raised concerns over Axar Patel losing the vice-captaincy of the Indian T20I side, with Shubman Gill taking over the role. Patel, who was named deputy to Suryakumar Yadav for the five-match series against England earlier this year, was replaced following Gill's return to T20Is after a year-long absence. Taking to social media, Kaif questioned the manner in which the change was handled. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance and he didn't come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong so he deserves an explanation," Kaif posted. Patel has cemented his place as a dependable all-rounder across formats, making key contributions in India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. He was named Player of the Match in the semi-final against England for his spell of 3/23. In the final against South Africa, Patel played another pivotal role, scoring 47 off 31 balls when India were reeling at 34/3, and later dismissing Tristan Stubbs to tilt the game in India's favor. Overall, Patel's T20I record highlights his consistency — 531 runs at a strike rate of 139.32, along with 71 wickets at an average of 22.12 from 71 matches.
