IGP: Recovery of black box from crashed police helicopter requires specialised expertise

JOHOR BARU: Efforts to recover the black box and extract the wreckage of the police-owned AS355N helicopter that crashed into Sungai Pulai will require specialised expertise and support from multiple agencies.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the depth of the river, estimated at 25 feet, posed a major challenge to the recovery operation.
"We are still waiting for updates on the black box. The search effort involves several agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and others with relevant expertise," he said after visiting the crash site at the Sungai Pulai Maritime Jetty on Thursday evening.
Also present was Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar.
Mohd Khalid said the wreckage extraction process was expected to take time, as it would require skilled personnel with experience in underwater recovery.
Meanwhile, the five victims of the crash have been identified as three men and two women. Two remain in critical condition and are on assisted ventilation, while the remaining three are reported to be stable.
"The MRI results for the injured victims have not been released. I urge all parties not to speculate on the incident," he said.
He also gave his assurance that the police would continue to ensure the welfare of the affected officers and personnel.
Earlier, the police helicopter was reported to have crashed into Sungai Pulai during a Field Training Exercise (FTX) for the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise, Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand-Singapore 2025 (MITSATOM 2025).
The incident occurred at 10.15am near the MMEA jetty in Jalan Cabang, Pekajang, Gelang Patah.
It is understood that all five crew members, comprising three men and two women, who were part of the exercise, survived the crash.
The helicopter had departed from the Tanjung Kupang police station at 9.51am with five people on board, including the pilot.

Penang cops book Kepala Batas hardware trader under three laws after upside-down Jalur Gemilang uproar

KEPALA BATAS, Aug 10 — Police detained the owner of a hardware store in Jalan Bertam Perdana here, following a flap over the Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down in front of his premises yesterday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the arrest of the 59-year-old man was made last night in the Kepala Batas area. 'The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. 'The investigation papers will be referred to the Penang deputy public prosecutor's office tomorrow with a proposed charge,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Alwi stated that so far, police have received 16 reports regarding the incident, 12 of which were lodged in the state, while the other four were reported outside the Penang contingent. He said the police view such acts seriously and reminded the public to respect the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty. Yesterday, a 21-second video went viral on social media showing two men at a hardware store here, who appeared to have deliberately installed and hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down, earning the wrath of netizens. Following this, several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican filed a police report. — Bernama

Already on our watch list: Kelantan police hunt duo dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin claims framed her in Thai Yaba drug case

KOTA BHARU, Aug 10 — Kelantan police say statements from Eda Ezrin or Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 33, her husband and a friend are consistent in their claims of being wronged. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said all three alleged they were victimised by two acquaintances, a man and a woman. 'Police will track down the two individuals named by Eda Ezrin and the others for investigation, as both are already under our watch in connection with a drug case,' he told a press conference at the Kelantan police headquarters today. It was reported on Aug 7 that Eda Ezrin and five other Malaysians, including her husband, were released by the Narathiwat Prison Court about 11 am (local time) after Thai prosecutors failed to present witnesses or evidence to support an appeal. The court had also dismissed the prosecution's sixth attempt to extend the appeal deadline. The group had been detained since Nov 1 last year after being accused of possessing 6,059 Yaba pills. After they were repatriated to Kelantan last Thursday and Friday, police recorded their statements at the Rantau Panjang police station and Kelantan police headquarters. — Bernama
