'UFO' and light shows bring CultureDale festival to a close
A year-long festival celebrating 50 years of the Calderdale borough will come to an end this weekend, with the grand finale showcasing a series of light installations.The Beacons event will see a UFO-like sphere shine in Todmorden, while a "searchlight spectacular" will light up the Old Flour Mill in Brighouse and a "halo of light" will be visible over Halifax.April has seen 50 events in the CultureDale programme, marking every year since the metropolitan borough was formed in 1974.Danielle Durrans of Calderdale Council said: "We knew we wanted something huge and memorable to give Calderdale the 50th birthday party it deserves, and the Year of Culture has certainly done that."
The light shows are the culmination of more than 350 events to have taken place during CultureDale. The UFO-inspired piece, located at the Canal Basin off Burnley Road in Todmorden, is by local artist Aimee Grundell, who said people would "witness a fusion of mystery, light and sound".The backdrop for the bright beams of Brighouse will be the ROKT Activity Centre in the Old Flour Mill.Organisers said the beams would be visible for miles and would "dance and play" throughout the sky on Saturday and Sunday from 20:00 until 22:00 BST.The sight would be a "celebration of Brighouse and its enduring spirit", the council said.
Meanwhile in Halifax, the sky across Beacon Hill will see a "halo of light" weaving patterns across the clouds.Organisers have called it a celebration of Halifax - its landscape, heritage and spirit.The Wainhouse Tower will also be lit up in colour.Durrans, cabinet member for public services and communities, said: "CultureDale has showcased the borough's creativity, talent, distinctiveness and diversity, and will be part of its story for generations to come."

Do you remember a few years ago when The New York Times tried to tell us that Aperol Spritzes weren't good? Well, clearly, I do, as I am still talking about it six years later. Personally, I love the bitter-leaning cocktail, particularly in the warmer months when I want equal parts interest and bubbles. I'm certainly not alone in my love affair, as the summery cocktail has slowly reappeared on menus (or really, they never left), primed and ready for a rooftop romp or an outing on a patio. Throwing its hat in the ring for the leading spritz of the summer is the Campari spritz. Made with Campari (duh), this version is a tad drier and more intense in its bitterness but still just as refreshing. Making its own stake on the season, the deep red liqueur is taking over a popular corner of Manhattan for a summer of spritz. This June, the iconic liqueur will be painting Dimes Square red, transforming it into Campari Spritz Square. Taking over 171 East Broadway, the aperitivo experience will offer curated food offerings, deals at local businesses in the area, and, naturally, spritzes. The two-day pop-up, taking place on June 14 and 15, offers two sit-down experiences in the micro-neighborhood. Each table will receive complimentary Campari spritzes, limited to two per person, paired with light bites and music from a live DJ. After you've properly been 'spritzed,' now is the time to shop, as the brand has partnered with three popular businesses in the area. Check out bespoke jewelry from Susan Alexandra, and vCampari-inspired art at the design shop-slash-gallery Coming fashion-forward clothing store, Colbo, will be hosting its own spritz-and-shop set-up with tunes, light bites and more chances to sip on the iconic cocktail. While the experience is complimentary, reservations are required. As of this writing, the event is currently sold out on Resy. Royal Ascot backs next generation of hat-makers from King's charity
Ahead of this month's world-famous meet, known as much for its colourful and creative displays of headwear as the horseracing, Ascot has introduced a £10,000 annual bursary to support a King's Foundation and Chanel graduating millinery student. Daniel McAuliffe, education director at The King's Foundation said: 'The royal family are incredible ambassadors for the craft of millinery and as the King's charity we are proud to be supporting the future of this skill at the most iconic hat-wearing event of the year.' The Foundation's students will also be showcasing their hats at this year's Royal Ascot, which runs from June 17-21, with a special display for racegoers in the Queen Anne Enclosure on the Berkshire course. The Chanel and The King's Foundation Metiers d'Art Millinery Fellowship in Partnership with le19M, Chanel's creative hub for artisans in Paris, was launched in 2024 with a cohort of six students. The intensive programme aims to develop a network of young specialist milliners in the UK, with the support of Parisian hat-maker Maison Michel at le19M. It forms part of The King's Foundation's wider work, inspired by Charles's passion for protecting traditional heritage skills at risk of being lost. Future students joining the millinery course will also be tasked with designing a Royal Ascot-inspired hat, with one selected to feature in the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective from 2026 onwards as its 11th design. The collective, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, is an annual presentation of 10 bespoke designs created exclusively for Royal Ascot under the creative direction of British fashion designer Daniel Fletcher. Mr McAuliffe added: 'This is such a fantastic opportunity for our talented millinery students as they begin to build their businesses. 'We are delighted to be working with Ascot and our long-term partners Chanel and le19M to recognise the importance of the British tradition of millinery.' Felicity Barnard, Ascot Racecourse's chief executive, said: 'Exquisite hats and millinery masterpieces are woven into the very fabric of Royal Ascot's heritage and we are committed to preserving and celebrating this tradition for generations to come.'
