Ballet flats with cushioned soles have shoppers with bunions buying 'again and again'
Every season brings with it a shoe that really takes off. Last year, it was the chunky loafer, and this autumn, the crown looks set to go to the ballet flat. Not the paper-thin pair you once wore to sixth-form discos, but a more adult version that's designed to look elegant and feel wearable. The Mary Jane flat, everywhere on the catwalks for AW25, seals its place as the shoe to know for the end of summer.
In particular, Vivaia's Almond-toe Mary-Jane AdaptAll flats are already gaining traction as a fashion insider favourite. The almond-shaped toe makes them sleeker than a round ballet pump, and the strap adds that collegiate edge we're seeing across collections from Miu Miu to Tory Burch. But beyond the trend points, there's something else setting them apart: comfort. A triple-layer cushioned sole has made them the flat shoe that even bunion sufferers can wear without regret. Instead of being a one-hour shoe, they're proving to be an all-day option.
The knit upper fabric flexes to fit, the strap adjusts rather than digs and you can chuck them in the washing machine when the weather makes them messy. The nine colours and prints range from deep forest shades to neutral staples, meaning they slot into wardrobes built around blazers and wide-leg trousers just as easily as dresses and tights.
But don't just take our word for it, shoppers are raving about them...
One reviewer pens: "I doubted whether the almond toe would fit to my prominent bunion feet after up to now only wearing square toe shoes, but surprisingly they do! And they look gorgeous. To be honest a second pair of the same style did not fit well as it was a little bit tighter and therefore too uncomfortable to keep."
Another says: "Love the look, mild cushioning inside, I wouldn't say major arch support for those with that issue. The criss cross straps are snug, I'm assuming they'll stretch a little as I wear them. All in all very happy with the purchase."
"Love them. So comfortable & will be great for travel," a third writes.
Fashion-wise, the timing is perfect. Ballet pumps and Mary Janes are two of the biggest footwear stories for autumn, styled on runways with everything from cropped tailoring to layered knits. The difference is that most runway versions aren't made for the bus commute or a long day on your feet. These are.
At £120, they're more of an investment than a throwaway high street flat, but that price tag has not slowed repeat purchases. Shoppers are going back for second and third pairs, which tells you everything you need to know about their staying power. However, if your budget doesn't stretch that far, we've spotted a New Look ballet pump launch that gets you a timeless Chanel-inspired look for considerably less. The Black Quilted Faux Leather Ballet Flats are priced at just £19.99, and have that same quiet luxury look as the designer ones without breaking the bank.

Dark world of Matthew Perry 'Ketamine Queen' who gave star 'drug lollies' and ate caviar
Jasveen Sangha, known as the 'Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles,' has agreed to plead guilty to multiple drug charges tied to the death of Friends icon, Matthew Perry Jasveen Sangha, aka the ' Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles', has seen her lavish lifestyle come crashing down after the tragic death of Matthew Perry in 2023. The 42-year-old, who has dual citizenship with the US and the UK, agreed to plead guilty in relation to the Friends star's death, just weeks before her trial was due to begin. Sangha, who had previously denied the charges, was the final defendant out of five accused in connection with the Chandler Bing star's death to reach a plea deal. She has been behind bars since August of last year. Her trial had been scheduled for August 19, later pushed to September 23, but after her U-turn, Sangha is set to plead guilty to five federal charges. It comes after it was revealed the Hollywood resident could face decades in prison following her role in Perry's death, which was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. Before she ended up behind bars, after federal prosecutors called her Los Angeles home a "drug-selling emporium" and found dozens of vials of ketamine during a raid, the glamorous socialite was wrapped up in a very shady world - but always dressed to impress... Designer gear Online, Sangha appeared to live a lavish lifestyle - holidaying in high-end resorts in Tokyo and Mexico, wearing Chanel and Luis Vuitton gear, and partying with Hollywood's glitziest circles including former drug addict, Charlie Sheen. Photographs on her Instagram page show her wearing eye-wateringly expensive Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery as well as Louis Vuitton trainers and Chanel suits. One source, who claims to be gobsmacked by the drug dealing claims, told the Daily Mail: 'She's always in the nicest designer clothes.' 'Sangha's stash house' Texts revealed in Sangha's indictment claimed she would 'only deal with high end and celeb' clients and stored drugs at her North Hollywood home, dubbed 'Sangha's Stash house'. Sangha boasted a number of A-list pals in Tinseltown, mingling with celebrities, including troubled star, Perry. Ketamine lollipops As part of her deal with the Friends star on October 24, Sangha threw in 'ketamine lollipops as an 'add on' for his large ketamine order', the indictment against her states. After seizing her phone, police reportedly found footage of Sangha 'cooking' ketamine and conversations related to 'selling pressed methamphetamine pills and ketamine'. Perry was found dead in a back yard jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home in October 2023, with an examination finding his death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. Feasting on caviar In February 2024, Sangha posted a photo of a plate piled with caviar from a private jet lounge at LAX airport. Also in the shot was a glass of chilled bubbly and a stack of plump blinis, perfect for the 'Ketamine Queen' to enjoy the mega-money delicacy, eaten by royalty and the rich and famous, with as she prepared to fly across the world... Private jets In another example of her lavish lifestyle, Sangha shared a snap of herself on a private jet on Instagram in front of a glass of champagne as she posed for a photo, looking delighted with life. Sporting an arm full of designer bracelets, she smiled for the photo as she settled down to travel in style. 5* holidays In November 2023, two weeks after Perry died, Sangha was seen quaffing lychee martinis on Instagram at the Mandarin Oriental hotel, in Tokyo, where suites cost nearly £1,500 a night. Four months later in February, she was sunning herself by a pool at a beachfront n Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and shared selfies drinking more cocktails. 'Play money, but don't be playing with my money,' she wrote in one of her captions after a source claimed Sangha was from a rich family. 'Wealthy family' Those close to Sangha told the Daily Mail they were 'completely shocked' that she could be involved in drug dealing because she came from a rich family, at the time of her arrest. Interior designer Clancy Carter, who knew Sangha since 2008, said: 'She has a family that cares for her. She has never been the type of person who needed money. 'She has property in the UK. She's always traveling and doing fun things with her family. I would never guess she would do something like this at all.'
