Man Sentenced To Death For Rape And Murder Of Minor Girl In Bengal

A special POCSO court here awarded death sentence to a man for the rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.
Noting that the victim was of the same age as the accused's daughter, the judge observed that the crime falls under the rarest of rare category.
The court sentenced convict Haripada Roy to death for the rape and murder of the girl.
Jalpaiguri special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court judge Rintu Sur also directed the district legal services authority to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to the victim's family.
He was also sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for destroying evidence.
The 11-year-old girl was abducted from in front of her house by the accused before raping and murdering her on September 29, 2023, prosecution lawyer Debasish Dutta said.
The lawyer said that since the panchayat board was being formed on that day, most of the villagers went there, including the victim's father and uncle.
After they returned, the girl's mother told them that she had been missing since 2 pm, and when she was not found after an extensive search, the uncle lodged a missing complaint at Dhupguri police station in Jalpaiguri district.
The body of the girl was found in a sack near a local river a few days later. A post mortem examination of the body revealed that she had been raped and strangulated to death, Dutta added.
The accused, a neighbour, was arrested following statements by locals that the girl was seen entering his house, followed by the recovery of evidence, the prosecution lawyer said.

Sonam Raghuvanshi took shelter at a rented accommodation in Indore after murdering her newly wed husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya last month, police sources said. Sonam, who was reported "missing" after Raja's body was recovered from a deep gorge in the northeastern state, escaped and went into hiding at the Indore flat that was rented by one of the three hitmen involved in the crime. The flat was taken on lease by Vishal Singh Chauhan, who was the first one to attack Raja with a machete in Meghalaya, the sources said. The remaining hitmen were identified as Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi. The sources said the accommodation is located five kilometres away from Vishal's house, and was taken on rent on May 30, seven days after the brutal crime that has sent shockwaves across the country. "The police verification was also done while he was taking the flat on rent. He said he was an interior designer and was looking for a flat to stay in. It was this flat where Sonam hid in after the murder," one of the sources said. "An advance of Rs 16,000 was also given to the landlord," the source added. Raj Kushwaha, Sonam's lover whom police said was the main conspirator, had ordered ration worth Rs 5,000 online for her in the flat, another source said. The case initially began as that of a "missing couple", after 29-year-old Raja and 24-year-old Sonam could not be traced during their honeymoon in the northeastern state, but took a tragic turn and revealed a shocking betrayal. The couple - both from Indore - got married on May 11. According to the police, the wedding took place despite Sonam's relationship with Raj, who worked as an accountant at the furniture sheet unit owned by her family. Sonam used to look after the family business. After their wedding in Indore, Raja and Sonam travelled to Meghalaya for honeymoon. They disappeared on May 23, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village, 20 km from where Raja's body was found on June 2. Amid an intense search for "missing" Sonam, she surfaced in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on June 8 and later surrendered at Nandganj police station. This came hours after Akash, Vishal, and Anand were arrested from Uttar Pradesh and Indore and Sagar towns (in Madhya Pradesh). Raj was arrested later. On Wednesday, Sonam reportedly confessed to killing her husband. Police said her cousin, Jitendra Raghuvanshi, had cleared the first installment of payment to the three hitmen. Sonam's brother Govind said his family has snapped all ties with her. He also expressed solidarity with Raja's grieving family members and vowed to help them in their fight for justice in a case which has shocked the nation.

NEET UG 2025 scam: CBI arrests two for running Rs 87.5 lakh exam score-fixing racket, no NTA involvement found
CBI The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two individuals for allegedly deceiving NEET UG 2025 aspirants and their families by falsely promising to manipulate exam scores in exchange for large sums of money, according to an official press release issued by the agency on Saturday. The CBI registered a case on June 9 against the accused, residents of Solapur and Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, for allegedly claiming to have access to officials within the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET exams. The primary accused was arrested in Mumbai on June 9, followed by the arrest of the co-accused in Sangli district on June 10. Both were produced before the Special CBI Court in Mumbai, which initially granted police custody until June 13, later extended to June 16. Investigators discovered that the accused had been meeting parents at Hotel ITC Grand Central in Mumbai's Parel area, demanding Rs 90 lakh per candidate and later negotiating the amount to Rs 87.5 lakh. The individuals allegedly assured parents that they would receive the inflated scores six hours prior to the official result declaration. Further inquiry revealed that one of the accused operated an admission consultancy firm in Navi Mumbai, while another associate ran a similar service in Pune. A forensic analysis of seized mobile phones uncovered incriminating chats that included NEET roll numbers, admit cards, OMR sheet details, and records of financial dealings via Hawala networks. So far, the CBI has found no involvement of government officials or NTA personnel in the scam. The accused are said to have misled parents by falsely claiming such connections. The investigation is ongoing.

BJ Medical College student from Rajasthan dies in Ahmedabad plane crash
Hanumangarh (Rajasthan) [India], June 14 (ANI): A student from BJ Medical College lost his life in the Ahmedabad plane crash after the aircraft struck the college building. The deceased student, Manav Bhadu, was a resident of Pilibanga town in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district. He had been studying at the medical college in Ahmedabad since August 2024. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Hanumangarh, Janesh Tanwar confirmed the identity of the victim and stated that his last rites would be performed today at his residence. Speaking to ANI, the official stated, '19-year-old Manav Bhadu, a resident of Pilibanga town, died in the Ahmedabad plane crash. He was studying in the medical college in Ahmedabad from August 2024. When the plane crash happened, he was present on the college premises. His last rites will be performed today at his residence...' Meanwhile, the collection of DNA samples from the family members of the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash is ongoing to help identify the bodies. Samples from over 250 people have already been collected in the massive identification effort. The victims' identification relies entirely on DNA results, as the bodies were charred beyond recognition. The Central government has constituted a high-level multi-disciplinary committee for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, that left 241 people dead. The Committee will be headed by the Home Secretary and will include representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force and Aviation experts. The committee will assess the emergency response of the various stakeholders, including rescue operations and coordination among them. It will also suggest policy changes, operational improvements and training enhancements required to prevent such occurrences and handle post-crash incident situations. 'A High Level Multi-disciplinary Committee is constituted for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, 2025. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future,' an order issued by the Civil Aviation Ministry read. The AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on June 12. The airline said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. The Tata Group has announced a compensation of Rs one crore for the families of each person who lost their lives in the crash. (ANI)
