Two sizzling squads meet when LAFC visit Minnesota United
Off back-to-back home shutout wins over the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, Los Angeles FC will try for their first-ever road victory over Minnesota United on Wednesday night in Saint Paul, Minn.
LAFC (9-5-5, 32 points), who blanked the Loons 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles, are 0-2-4 all-time in road matches with Minnesota, including a 2-0 loss last season.
LAFC are sixth in the Western Conference but still have three games in hand after going 0-2-1, including a 2-0 loss to eventual champion Chelsea, in the FIFA Club World Cup. After a 1-0 home loss to Vancouver, Los Angeles bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Rapids and a 2-0 victory last Saturday over Dallas.
Former Tottenham star and French international Hugo Lloris needed to make just one save against Dallas for his eighth clean sheet of the season and 20th in two seasons with LAFC. Denis Bouanga had a goal and an assist to increase his MLS totals to 10 goals and seven assists in 18 matches.
'There is rhythm, that is great to see,' LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. 'There is confidence. That is good to see. ... We have done this for two (matches) in a row, and we hope to continue that against Minnesota.'
Los Angeles will have to do it without one of its best defenders, however. The team announced Tuesday that Aaron Long, carted off in the 76th minute against Dallas, underwent surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season.
Minnesota (11-4-7, 40 points) is second in the Western Conference, two points behind San Diego FC, and is a perfect 3-0-0 in July, including a U.S. Open Cup win over the Chicago Fire, outscoring its opponents 9-3 in the process.
The Loons come in off an impressive 4-1 home win over San Jose on Saturday. Tani Oluwaseyi had a goal and two assists and Robin Lod picked up his 34th career assist, eclipsing Emanuel Reynoso's regular-season club record of 33. Oluwaseyi, a member of the Canadian national team, has nine goals and eight assists this season.
'I think in general it was a high-level performance, and I think the score line reflected that and the chances we had reflected that,' Minnesota coach Eric Ramsay said. 'I think this team has a lot of energy and a lot of momentum at the moment.'

Montreal, Chicago look to turn things around

Montreal (3-14-6, 15 points) is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, extending its MLS winless streak to three games (0-2-1) after a rare positive stretch in which it had won two of three. The Canadian side held their own against the Supporters' Shield leaders for much of the 90 minutes. They continued to push after conceding the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute and on several occasions came close to pulling level only to be denied by stellar saves from Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake (as well as the post). 'When you go toe to toe with the best of the best in the league, it's something you're proud of, but at the same time we're not satisfied,' defender Joel Waterman said. 'I don't want the boys to feel satisfied whatsoever. One thing we can't fault is the effort (Wednesday) and against a really good team. We have another game on Saturday so we'll try and learn a lot like always and we'll move forward.' Montreal's inability to capitalize on its chances has been an issue for much of the season, with just 20 goals through 23 games. They rank 21st in MLS with 95 on-target scoring attempts, and the 346 free kicks they've been awarded are fourth most in the league. 'There is a bit of frustration, but we have to look forward, try to keep it in the past and work on the mistakes,' Montreal interim coach Marco Donadel said. They've tightened up defensively in their past two games but will face a Chicago side that has scored the third-most goals in MLS (42). While the Fire (8-9-5, 29 points) have had little trouble finding the back of the net, they've also struggled to keep it out of their own. They've conceded 40 goals, fourth most in the league and just three fewer than Montreal. Chicago has won just once in its past six games (1-4-1) after settling for a draw in its most recent outing against Atlanta United on Wednesday. The Fire grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second minute and went ahead 2-1 in the 79th minute, but a goal by Atlanta in second-half stoppage time left them with a single point after the final whistle. 'It's a point that feels like a loss, right?' Chicago coach Gregg Berhalter said. 'I think we played well enough to win a game. ... Third game in eight days, and the guys have been grinding, and you see the effort they put in today to come in here and dominate the game like that -- and (they) deserved to win.' Philip Zinckernagel tallied his 10th goal of the season and has scored or assisted in a club-record nine straight road games. He's one away from tying Josef Martinez for the MLS record.

Struggling Sea Bears fall to Surge

Seconds later, Calgary Surge guard Evan Gilyard Jr. sent them to the exits by drilling a mid-range jumper to reach the winning score and give the visitors a 93-89 victory over the Sea Bears. 'We just wanted to get a stop,' said Sea Bears centre Simi Shittu. 'I felt like we had the game, and had a good chance at winning, but obviously, he made a tough shot. We made it as tough as we could for them, but at the end of the day, sometimes things fall and sometimes they don't.' The Sea Bears bench has now been outduelled by the opposition's second unit in six of their last seven games as the Surge surpassed them 20-5 in the category. 'I think it was a great game. I think we gave tremendous effort. I think at the most crucial possessions we had some turnovers,' said head coach Mike Taylor. New additions Richardson and Trevon Scott made their home debuts after signing last week to replace Terry Roberts (Brooklyn Nets) and Jaylin Williams (Dallas Mavericks) who left temporarily to play in the NBA Summer League. Canadian forward Maurice Calloo made his season debut for Winnipeg after signing on Monday. Richardson, who was most recently in the NBA G League with the Grand Rapids Gold, had the biggest impact out of the newbies by hitting 9-of-13 from the field for 23 points while also adding seven assists and eight boards in a game-high 34:55 minutes. 'He's a really high IQ point guard. He's been well coached, let's give credit to the University of Oregon… You can tell he really knows how to play,' said Taylor. 'He's enjoying our situation, he's enjoying the game, and I love a natural floor general like that who organizes the game, that gets the ball to the right players. He's really a quarterback out there, and it's something that I love.'
