Independence Day: Toll relief, annual pass for pvt vehicles on highways from 15 Aug

Minta day ago

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday announced a FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹ 3,000, effective from 15 August, offering commuters relief from having to paying frequent hefty toll charges on national highways.
The new pass, which will be valid for a year from the date of activation or 200 trips—whichever comes first—is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans to facilitate hassle-free, faster and smoother travel experience for millions, minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said in a post on X.
'In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, we are introducing a FASTag-based Annual Pass priced at F3,000, effective from 15th August 2025… The Annual Pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country.
A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH,' Gadkari said.
Mint reported in February on a plan for annual discounted toll passes for private vehicles on national highways.
Travellers will also get a discount on the toll on certain national highway stretches.
'This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimizing disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,' the minister's post said.
The move follows rising concern over high toll charges on Indian highways. Several new stretches have a string of toll booths that make travelling on them extremely expensive for both personal and commercial vehicles.
It is estimated that toll charges for a one-way journey on the 1,386-km Delhi-Mumbai expressway, which is still under construction, could range between ₹ 1,000 and ₹ 3,000 depending on the type of vehicle.
The toll is determined on the basis of distance as well as the road structure. For instance, it is higher on routes with more railway overpasses. Toll charges grew by over 3% in FY25 and are projected to grow by 3.5-4.2% in FY2026, according to an Icra report.
The annual pass has been designed in a way that it does not impact the revenue of concessionaires operating highway stretches. This means that any loss in projected revenue from highway stretches would be covered by the government.
The toll pass could significantly reduce travel costs for frequent commuters and enhance ease of movement. Several states, including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, have already tried out monthly toll passes, which demonstrated their feasibility.
The loss of revenue from discounting is expected to be limited given that private vehicles contribute just about 26% of annual toll collection, while 74% share is with commercial vehicles.
The user fee collection or toll collection at plazas on national highways stood at ₹ 55,882.12 crore in FY24. This was a jump over the ₹ 48,032.40 crore collected in FY23 and ₹ 33,928.66 crore in FY22.
In FY25, the ministry of road transport and highways is targeting toll collection of ₹ 70,000 crore. As on October, 2024, there were a total of 1,015 user-fee plazas on national highways. A 3-5% traffic growth is likely to see toll collection grow by 7-9% in FY2026, the Icra report said.
The ministry will also implement a barrier-less global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based toll collection system on certain stretches of national highways as an added facility along with FASTag.
A GNSS-based toll collection system would do away with the need for toll plazas on those highways stretches, facilitate smooth movement of vehicles and enable distance-based tolling so users pay only for the stretches they have travelled.

CM Orders Gadchiroli Airport Survey, Pushes For Timely Land Acquisition

Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday ordered an immediate obstacle limitation surface (OLS) survey for the proposed Gadchiroli airport, directing the district collector to submit a detailed proposal. The instruction came during a high-level review meeting on land acquisition for major infrastructure projects, held in Mumbai. Fadnavis further instructed the runway at Akola Airport to be extended to 2,400m apart from envisioning a modern, large-scale terminal for the city. He emphasised the need for comprehensive planning for air connectivity in Kolhapur, Karad, Akola, Gadchiroli, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Stressing the need for strict adherence to timelines, Fadnavis said, "No project should stall due to land acquisition delays. All agencies must work in mission mode with quality and structured coordination." He cautioned that delays lead to steep cost escalations and insisted that each agency follow the pre-defined schedule meticulously. Fadnavis also reviewed the progress of multiple critical projects, including the Nagpur-Gondia, Nagpur-Chandrapur, and Bhandara-Gadchiroli expressways, directing officials to finalise their alignment using the Gati Shakti portal to ensure minimal forest land diversion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 & 3 BHK Homes Near Padur, OMR Starting @ ₹72.50 Lakh* TVS Emerald Undo For the Wardha-Gadchiroli and Wardha-Nanded railway lines, the CM set a 15-day deadline to complete land acquisition. Wheels Of Grit: How Specially Abled Women Are Redefining Delivery Jobs

1 2 Nagpur: On any given day, if you spot a food delivery executive zipping past you on an electric bike, look closer — you might witness a quiet revolution in motion. Wearing the uniform of a leading food delivery aggregator, five women aren't just beating traffic; they're beating the odds. Each one lives with over 80% disability. Earning a steady income of Rs25,000 a month, these women are scripting a new narrative of dignity and independence. TOI spoke to a few specially abled women who are currently working as food delivery executives to learn about what drove them to the job. Manjusha Dhanorkar, who was widowed two years back after a long illness of her husband, wanted to take care of her two children — studying in 10th and 12th — and her mother-in-law and her husband's grandmother. "Even before the death of my husband when he was suffering from a deadly disease, the responsibility of my family came over me. I had two options: either let my disability stop me or do something for my family. I chose the latter," said Dhanorkar. She then started driving children to school in her e-rickshaw and used to earn around Rs15,000 per month. "Around four months back, I got the opportunity to work as a food delivery executive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Now I am working both jobs and earning a modest living," said Dhanorkar. Dhanorkar was among five other women and 10 men who got to work with the food delivery aggregator after they were approached by an organisation, Youth4Job, which works for people with disabilities. Trupti Lonare, who too has to take care of her widowed sister and a mother suffering from paralysis, said that she got a call from the organisation. "They told me that they will be providing us training and a vehicle to make deliveries. They told me that we have to pay Rs3,000. Earlier I was hesitant but later agreed to it and paid the money on the day of training. We were provided with vehicles and training about how to deal with customers. Since then, 15 of us, including five women, have joined the food aggregator and are earning steadily," said Lonare, adding that the job has made her financially independent. The specially abled food delivery executives have to do orders in a 4-kilometre radius from their residence and carry out around 10 deliveries every day, earning Rs80 per delivery. "I am a graduate and live with my old parents. I work for around 6 hours daily till the battery of my vehicle sustains. I also do sewing work side by side. This work has given me renewed dignity that I too can live with respect," said Suruchi Shahu, another food delivery executive. The women claimed that 95% of their experience while working is good. "When we tell customers that we are handicapped, they come down from the building and even look at us with awe and respect. What else do we need," said Shahu.
