Govt launches multi-agency plan to fight 'critical level' drug abuse
PUTRAJAYA: Drug abuse has reached a critical level and now poses a serious threat to public safety, economic stability and the country's social structure, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) .
To address the growing problem and increasingly complex challenges, he said the Cabinet Committee on Eradicating Drug Abuse has approved the Anti-Drug Communication Plan 2025-2027, which takes a comprehensive and targeted approach.
The Deputy Prime Minister said there were 192,857 drug users and addicts in the country as of last year, with 61% aged 15 to 39.
"Of this number, 96% are male, driven largely by peer influence and curiosity,' he said in a statement after chairing the committee meeting here on Monday (May 19).

Ahmad Zahid said Kelantan recorded the highest rate of drug abuse with 1,130 users per 100,000 population, followed by Terengganu (974), Perlis (965), and Kedah (898).
He said the communication plan approved today focuses on promoting behavioural change, increasing awareness, and delivering accurate information through coordinated efforts across multiple agencies towards a national anti-drug movement.
To enhance treatment and rehabilitation efforts, the Drug Assessment Centre (DAC) under the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) has adopted a single-point entry approach to expedite screening and intervention for detainees without waiting for pathology results.

"As of April 5, a total of 261 detainees had undergone evaluation at the DAC in Kuala Muda, Kedah,' he said.
He also highlighted new concerns involving mushroom-flavoured vape products found to contain psychoactive substances such as psilocybin and psilocin, based on findings by the National Poison Centre.
"These substances pose a serious risk to children and youth and require immediate and more aggressive enforcement action,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid also announced that the Home Ministry will use the Crime Data Network Analysis system to track drug-related crime patterns and help develop more focused and effective strategies.

He stressed that the government remains firm in implementing the National Drug Policy, which covers prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and enforcement.
"The fight against drugs is a shared responsibility that requires active involvement from all levels of society, including the public and civil society groups.
"To protect future generations from the threat of drugs, we will remain steadfast and uncompromising in this fight against the nation's number one enemy,' he added. – Bernama

MACC to file application to forfeit Ilham Tower

(Website pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will file an application to forfeit the Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur next week, says its chief, Azam Baki. Azam said the forfeiture application would be filed under Section 55 or 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla), Utusan Malaysia reported. Section 56 of Amla provides for the forfeiture of property where there is no prosecution, if a High Court judge is satisfied that the asset was the subject-matter or evidence relating to the commission of an offence under the Act, the proceeds of an unlawful activity, or the instrumentalities of an offence. MACC first seized the 274m-tall tower owned by the late Daim Zainuddin and his family under the MACC Act in December 2023. It previously said it could seize the tower for up to 18 months pending investigations. Yesterday, it announced it had seized the tower again, this time under Amla. Daim's widow, Naimah Khalid, plans to challenge the seizure in court. Last month, MACC opened eight new investigation papers into 'high-value' assets linked to Daim and his family members after receiving new information from overseas.

Alarming rise in sexual assault cases

TAWAU: A concerted effort from all parties is crucial to address the rising issue of sexual harassment, which has shown a significant increase nationwide, said Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. He noted that based on reports from the police there were 477 sexual harassment cases recorded in 2022, which rose to 522 cases in 2023 and surged further to 788 cases in 2024. Advertisement As of March this year alone, 214 cases have already been reported, including five in Sabah. He said the increasing numbers reflects the severity of sexual harassment and the need to raise public awareness while strengthening support channels for victims. 'Sexual harassment is an immoral act that can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, race or religion. 'This issue must be addressed early because if left unchecked, it can lead to more serious crimes such as rape and violence against women,' he added. Advertisement Dr Joachim said this at the closing ceremony of the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry's (KPWKM) 2025 Kembara Kasih Programme at the Tawau Sports Complex Hall here on Saturday. Dr Joachim welcomed KPWKM's initiative in establishing the Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment (TAGS) as an alternative to civil courts, providing a faster, easier and more cost-effective complaint process. Thus, he urged more victims to come forward and seek justice. He said violence against women is not an isolated issue, but many victims remain silent due to stigma, social pressure or a lack of awareness about available support channels. 'We all have a responsibility to create a safe environment and support victims in standing up for their rights,' he said. Earlier, he commended the Ministry's Kembara Kasih Programme, which covered six districts in Sabah, namely Tuaran, Papar, Penampang, Lahad Datu, Kunak and concluded in Tawau. The programme saw the implementation of 34 initiatives by various agencies under KPWKM, targeting vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities. Dr Joachim, accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Linda Ewit, also expressed appreciation to the organisers for choosing Sabah as this year's Kembara Kasih destination. French rabbi tells of two attacks in one week as hate crimes rise
PARIS (Reuters) - A French rabbi was attacked on Friday for the second time in a week, he told Reuters, reflecting a broad rise in hate crimes across France that has included high-profile anti-Semitic assaults. Elie Lemmel said he was sitting at a cafe in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine on Friday when he was hit in the head by a chair. "I found myself on the ground, I immediately felt blood flowing," he said. He was stunned and unsure what exactly had happened, he said, initially thinking something must have fallen from a window or roof, before it occurred to him he had been attacked. "Unfortunately, given my beard and my kippah, I suspected that was probably why, and it's such a shame," he said. Friday's incident follows another in the town of Deauville in Normandy last week, when Lemmel said he was punched in the stomach by an unknown assailant. Lemmel said he was used to "not-so-friendly looks, some unpleasant words, people passing by, spitting on the ground," but had never been physically assaulted before the two attacks. The prosecutor's office in Nanterre said it had opened an investigation into the Neuilly attack for aggravated violence and that a person was being held for questioning. It said it could not provide further details. "This act sickens us," former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal wrote on X regarding Friday's incident involving Lemmel. "Antisemitism, like all forms of hatred, is a deadly poison for our society." Last week, five Jewish institutions were sprayed with green paint in Paris. "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the anti-Semitic attack that targeted a rabbi in Neuilly today. Attacking a person because of their faith is a shame. The increase in anti-religious acts requires the mobilization of everyone," Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said in a post on X. France has seen a rise in hate crimes. Last year, police recorded an 11% rise in racist, xenophobic or antireligious crimes, according to official data published in March.
