Punjab: PSWC takes swift action after shocking assault on elderly woman

Phagwara, Jun 18 (UNI) The Punjab State Women Commission (PSWC) has sought a full inquiry from the district administration under urgent timelines after a video showing an elderly woman being assaulted in Jalandhar's Nakodar area surfaced on social media.
The video, which quickly went viral, prompted the Commission to step in.
The incident, which occurred in Raipur Gujran village, shows a man Gurjeet Singh and an unnamed woman—brutally beating a senior citizen. The footage sparked outrage across social media platforms, leading to widespread calls for justice.
Acting under Section 12 of the PSWC Act, 2001, Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill took suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued firm instructions to the local administration. She directed that an immediate investigation by a senior officer be launched, and that a detailed report be submitted to the Commission no later than Thursday, June 19.
"The Commission is deeply concerned by the inhuman treatment meted out to the elderly woman,"
said Chairperson Raj Lali Gill in an official statement. "We will ensure strict action is taken. There is
zero tolerance for violence against women, especially the elderly, who deserve our utmost respect
and protection."
The video was originally posted by a user named Rajvinder Singh, who identified the accused as Gurjeet Singh from the same village. In the video, the elderly woman is seen being pinned to the ground and mercilessly beaten by the duo, with no intervention from bystanders.
The graphic nature of the footage shocked viewers and immediately drew the attention of state authorities.
The Commission's intervention has now placed the spotlight on the local administration and police, who have been tasked with conducting a time-bound and impartial investigation.
Chairperson Gill also indicated that further legal steps will be taken once the report is received. UNI GS XC SSP

Ranchi: Advocate general (AG) Rajiv Ranjan informed the Jharkhand high court on Tuesday that a special investigation team ( SIT ) would be constituted to investigate the alleged leak of question papers of the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC CGL) examination. A division bench of Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and Justice Rajesh Shankar were hearing a PIL filed by Prakash Kumar seeking a CBI probe into the leak of question papers. The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission had conducted the JSSC CGL exam, 2023, on January 28, 2024. Questions in the third paper (general knowledge) were leaked after which the Commission cancelled the paper. Furore created by the candidates led the Commission to cancel the other three papers. A total of 6.5 lakh candidates had registered for the exam for appointment of 2025 posts in the govt. AG Ranjan informed the division bench about the progress of investigation done by the CID. Expressing dissatisfaction with the investigation carried out in the matter, the court sought details from the CID in the case. The AG further told the court that a SIT of high ranking officers would be formed to scrutiny the details and compile a report on the matter. The case would next be heard after a fortnight. Eight policemen suspended after dance video goes viral during Janmashtami event in Jaunpur

Jaunpur, Aug 19 (UNI) A video showing a dance performance to a Bollywood number during a Janmashtami celebration at Badlapur Police Station has gone viral on social media, leading to disciplinary action against several police personnel. On Tuesday, eight policemen were suspended in connection with the incident. Earlier, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Kaustubh had already suspended the Station House Officer (SHO), Arvind Kumar Pandey, for negligence. The incident took place during Janmashtami celebrations, where most police stations across the district organized devotional events featuring tableaux, dances, and performances of bhajans (devotional songs). However, in Badlapur, the event took a different turn when dancers performed to the Bollywood song "Mujhe Nau Lakkha Manga De Re," which is typically played at local orchestras, instead of a devotional number. The performance occurred when SHO Arvind Kumar Pandey briefly stepped away from the stage area to participate in religious rituals. During his absence, some off-duty policemen in civil clothes, along with local attendees, requested a dance performance. The dancers obliged by performing on the popular film song, prompting the crowd to cheer and dance along. The move invited trouble after someone in the audience recorded the performance and uploaded the video on social media on Sunday afternoon. The video quickly went viral, drawing public criticism over the inappropriateness of the act in a religious setting and at a police premises. Taking swift action, SP Dr. Kaustubh suspended SHO Pandey the same day for failing to maintain decorum at the event. He also appointed SP City Ayush Srivastava to investigate the matter. Based on the findings, eight more policemen were suspended on Tuesday for their involvement or failure to prevent the incident. UNI PRI RN
