Samsung surpasses Apple in super-premium segment for the first time ever: Top-selling smartphones
Samsung has surpassed Apple to take the leadership position in the super-premium segment (smartphones priced at $800 and above/ around Rs 70,000) in first half of 2025 (1H25), a report has said. According to market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung captured a 49% share compared to Apple's 48% in first 6 months of this year. Key models driving this segment were the iPhone 16, Galaxy S25/S24 Ultra/S25 and iPhone 16 Plus in India in 1H25 Entry-level segment grew by 22.9% year-over-year, increasing its market share from 14% to 16%. Xiaomi was the leader, driven by its affordable Redmi A4 and A5 models. Shipments in the mass budget segment saw a modest 1.1% year-over-year increase, though its overall market share fell from 44% to 42%. Vivo, OPPO, and realme collectively dominated the category, accounting for 60% of shipments. Entry-level premium segment declined, with shipments dropping by 2.5% and its market share decreasing from 30% to 27%. Vivo, Samsung, and OPPO were the top players, while Motorola saw a multi-fold increase in shipments, securing the fourth position. Mid-range premium segment experienced growth of 39.5%, with its share increasing from 4% to 5%. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 together made up over three-fifths of the shipments. Data suggests that the iPhone 16 was the highest-shipped model across India in 1H25, making up 4% of overall India shipments during that period. India's smartphone market grows 1% YoY in 1H25: IDC As per IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, India's smartphone market shipped 70 million smartphones in the first half of 2025, marking a 0.9% year-over-year growth. The second quarter of 2025 saw a stronger performance, with a 7.3% year-over-year increase, shipping 37 million smartphones. 'The second quarter of 2025 witnessed a flurry of new model launches across all price segments. This, coupled with price reductions on older models, increased offline channel margins, and strong above-the-line (ATL) marketing efforts, collectively fueled market growth,' said Aditya Rampal, senior research analyst, devices research, IDC Asia Pacific.. The report also said that while the market has recovered from a slump, overall consumer demand remains low, and rising average selling prices (ASPs) are expected to slow the pace of annual growth. How top 10 smartphone brands performed in India The report highlighted that Vivo maintained its strong performance, holding the top position in the Indian smartphone market for the sixth consecutive quarter. The brand's success is attributed to its well-rounded product portfolio. Samsung remained a steady second, achieving a 21% growth. This was largely driven by new model launches in its Galaxy A, M and F series, which introduced AI-enabled features to the mid-range segment. Oppo secured the third spot, followed by Realme, Xiaomi, Motorola in fourth, fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Apple , with 7th position, continued its strong performance in India, with shipments growing by 21.5% year-over-year to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025. The iPhone 16 was the most-shipped smartphone model in India during this period, accounting for 4% of the country's total smartphone shipments. iQoo, Poco and OnePlus completes the list by grabbing the last three spots in the top 10.
