June 13 (UPI) -- Liverpool agreed to a potential record transfer fee of nearly $157 million for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and Sky Sports about the agreement Friday. Wirtz is expected to sign a five-year deal with the Reds. If completed, Wirtz's pact, which features a guaranteed $135.2 million and $21.6 million in add-ons, would set a British transfer fee record.
Wirtz, 22, made his senior debut at Leverkusen in 2020. He totaled 18 goals and 20 assists over 49 appearances in 2023-24 en route to Bundesliga Player of the Season honors. Wirtz totaled 16 goals and 15 assists over 45 appearances last season.
Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez set the previous British transfer fee record when he joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023.
The Reds were 25-4-9 this season en route to their first Premier League crown since 2019-20. They will take on EFL Championship club Preston in a friendly at 10 a.m. EDT July 13 in Preston, England.

U.K. PM Starmer in Ottawa to talk trade, Middle East conflict with Carney ahead of G7

OTTAWA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in Ottawa to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney today before the two leaders leave for the G7 leaders' summit in Alberta. He will meet Carney this morning in his West Block office on Parliament Hill before both leaders fly separately to Calgary. Last night, Starmer had dinner with Carney at his official residence at Rideau Cottage, later taking in the hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers. Starmer's visit comes as Canada seeks to reopen trade talks with the U.K. which were paused early in 2024, leaving in place a temporary deal signed after Brexit. There's a sticking point around Britain wanting to ban exports of hormone-treated beef from Canada and calls from British farmers to export more cheese to Canada's protected dairy sector. The conflict in the Middle East is likely also on the agenda after the exchange of missiles between Israel and Iran and both countries call for de-escalation while affirming Israel's right to defence. Starmer says he has positioned British jets for 'contingency support in the region,' The Associated Press reports. Last month both leaders joined French President Emmanuel Macron to sign a strongly worded statement about Israel's restrictions on food aid reaching the Gaza Strip. Bayer Leverkusen linked with attackers Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert

Holland's Voetbal International and England's Talk Sport both have fresh news to report regarding Bayer Leverkusen transfer rumors. The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions are being linked with Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert as part of their sorely needed summer restock in attack. Bakayoko could serve as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong while Kluivert – in his new role as a ten – could help die Werkself absorb the loss of Florian Wirtz. Bakayoko enters the final year of his contract with PSV Eindhoven. The Eredivisie champions reportedly seek a €20m transfer fee for the 22-year-old. This could constitute something of a steal as the 18-times-capped international currently maintains a €30m estimated market value, down from a peak of €45m in May 2024. Bakayoko still scored 12 goals and registered three assists last season. Advertisement The Kluivert links prove interesting as the son of Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert does have some Bundesliga experience. The current Bournemouth man spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with the German Red Bulls from AS Roma. Kluivert scored four goals in 27 appearances across all competitions for Julian Nagelsmann's RB that season. Memorably, he netted what would prove the match-winner in a Champions League encounter against Manchester United. Kluivert could potentially fancy a return to German football and a possible reunion with former Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag. The Talk Sport report nevertheless makes it clear that Kluivert's Premier League club aren't interested in selling him. Kluivert has more than tripled his estimated market value since moving to England ahead of the 2023/24 season. In the last six months alone, the seven-times-capped international has pumped up his value from €22m to €35m. GGFN | Peter Weis

Hit or miss? Our verdict on the 11 most expensive Premier League signings

Jack Grealish has won lots of trophies but is playing less and less at Manchester City - Getty Images/Tom Flathers Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz for an initial £100 million, with a further £16 million in potential add-ons. If those add-ons are paid, it would make the German the most expensive player in the history of British football. A huge transfer fee does not guarantee success in the Premier League, though, as this list of the 10 most expensive deals in British football proves. 11. Romelu Lukaku, £75m Everton to Manchester United, 2017 Lukaku was described by Jose Mourinho as a 'natural fit for Manchester United', but it did not work out that way. After two seasons at Old Trafford, he was sold to Inter Milan in 2019. Verdict: Miss👎 10. Josko Gvardiol, £77m RB Leipzig to Manchester City, 2023 Gvardiol has proved to be everything that City thought he would be: a high-class, powerful, technically gifted defender who can play as a centre-back or a left-back. Verdict: Hit👍 9. Harry Maguire, £80m Leicester City to Manchester United, 2019 Maguire has experienced relentless turbulence at Old Trafford, on a personal and collective level. He was stripped of the captaincy in July 2023 but has since recovered to become a key player again. He may not be world class, but he is one of the few leaders at United and he is certainly resilient. Verdict: Hit👍 8. Darwin Nunez, £85m (£64m initial fee) Benfica to Liverpool, 2022 Nunez is unlikely to have triggered all of the add-ons in Liverpool's agreement with Benfica. The Uruguayan striker has struggled for consistency and could leave the club this summer after scoring only five goals in the Premier League in 2024/25. Verdict: Miss👎 7. Antony, £82m Ajax to Manchester United, 2022 The biggest flop on this list, Antony is the poster boy of United's recent mismanagement. The Brazilian scored 12 goals in 96 appearances (only five of which were in the Premier League) before he was loaned to Real Betis in January. Verdict: Miss👎 6. Paul Pogba, £89 million Juventus to Manchester United, 2016 Pogba occasionally produced world-class performances for United but, overall, he failed to justify the fee. An incredibly gifted player, but he lacked the structure and the consistency to make it work at Old Trafford. Verdict: Miss👎 5. Romelu Lukaku, £97.5m Inter Milan to Chelsea, 2021 Lukaku returned to Stamford Bridge with ambitions of leading Chelsea to trophy-winning success. It proved a terrible move. He scored eight league goals in 2021-22, before being loaned to Inter Milan the following campaign. Verdict: Miss👎 4. Jack Grealish, £100m Aston Villa to Manchester City, 2021 A tricky one to judge, especially as he has fallen out of favour over the past year. He did, though, play a key role in City's historic treble in 2022-23. Grealish made 50 appearances in all competitions in that campaign. Verdict: Jury's out🤷 3. Declan Rice, to £105m (£100m initial fee) West Ham United to Arsenal, 2023 Rice has continued to improve since arriving at Arsenal from West Ham and he was voted player of the season at the end of 2024-25. A huge presence on the pitch, he is adding more layers to his game with each passing season. Verdict: Hit👍 2. Enzo Fernandez, £107m Benfica to Chelsea, 2023 The Argentina midfielder has become one of the main leaders at Chelsea and is clearly an important player for Enzo Maresca. There is an awfully long way to go before he can claim to have justified his huge fee, though. Verdict: Jury's out🤷 1. Moises Caicedo, £115m (£100m initial fee) Brighton to Chelsea, 2023 Caicedo was named Chelsea's player of the season in 2024-25 and was probably one of the Premier League's best midfielders for much of the campaign. He will never attract as many headlines as more attacking players, but he has become absolutely central to Chelsea's system. Verdict: Hit👍 Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
