Liverpool agrees to record $157M transfer for midfielder Florian Wirtz

June 13 (UPI) -- Liverpool agreed to a potential record transfer fee of nearly $157 million for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and Sky Sports about the agreement Friday. Wirtz is expected to sign a five-year deal with the Reds. If completed, Wirtz's pact, which features a guaranteed $135.2 million and $21.6 million in add-ons, would set a British transfer fee record.
Wirtz, 22, made his senior debut at Leverkusen in 2020. He totaled 18 goals and 20 assists over 49 appearances in 2023-24 en route to Bundesliga Player of the Season honors. Wirtz totaled 16 goals and 15 assists over 45 appearances last season.
Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez set the previous British transfer fee record when he joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023.
The Reds were 25-4-9 this season en route to their first Premier League crown since 2019-20. They will take on EFL Championship club Preston in a friendly at 10 a.m. EDT July 13 in Preston, England.

Starmer says he has positioned British jets for 'contingency support in the region,' The Associated Press reports. Last month both leaders joined French President Emmanuel Macron to sign a strongly worded statement about Israel's restrictions on food aid reaching the Gaza Strip. Bayer Leverkusen linked with attackers Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert
Holland's Voetbal International and England's Talk Sport both have fresh news to report regarding Bayer Leverkusen transfer rumors. The 2023/24 Bundesliga champions are being linked with Johan Bakayoko and Justin Kluivert as part of their sorely needed summer restock in attack. Bakayoko could serve as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong while Kluivert – in his new role as a ten – could help die Werkself absorb the loss of Florian Wirtz. Bakayoko enters the final year of his contract with PSV Eindhoven. The Eredivisie champions reportedly seek a €20m transfer fee for the 22-year-old. This could constitute something of a steal as the 18-times-capped international currently maintains a €30m estimated market value, down from a peak of €45m in May 2024. Bakayoko still scored 12 goals and registered three assists last season. Kluivert scored four goals in 27 appearances across all competitions for Julian Nagelsmann's RB that season. Memorably, he netted what would prove the match-winner in a Champions League encounter against Manchester United. Kluivert could potentially fancy a return to German football and a possible reunion with former Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag. The Talk Sport report nevertheless makes it clear that Kluivert's Premier League club aren't interested in selling him. Kluivert has more than tripled his estimated market value since moving to England ahead of the 2023/24 season. Moises Caicedo, £115m (£100m initial fee) Brighton to Chelsea, 2023 Caicedo was named Chelsea's player of the season in 2024-25 and was probably one of the Premier League's best midfielders for much of the campaign.
