In her detailed post, Jain wrote: 'I realised how far our country has come when two women police officers looked out for me on a late‑night train. Yesterday, while I was travelling alone on a late‑night train from Mumbai to Surat, two women police officers entered my compartment at around 11 pm and asked, 'Seat 38 - Purvi?' A bit confused, I told them I was Purvi. They stopped, checked whether I was comfortable, and asked if I needed any help. Then they gave me a helpline number to call if I ever feel unsafe.'
A simple act that speaks volumes
She further added that this had never happened to her before, despite being a frequent traveller. 'Later, I learned they were checking on me because I was travelling alone. The elderly couple sitting next to me were just as surprised. They said their granddaughter often travels alone, and gestures like this make them feel reassured.'
Reflecting on the experience, she noted, 'That small moment made me reflect on how much India's railways — and the country overall — have improved. From Vande Bharat trains to seamless online ticket bookings (even Tatkal, thanks to a faster verification process), travel keeps getting smoother.'
Acknowledging there is still a long way to go, she wrote, 'We're not perfect, and we're certainly not yet on par with developed nations. But moments like this — women officers ensuring solo female passengers feel secure, smooth digital ticketing, and many other small changes — show real progress is happening, even if it's one step at a time.'

Does IRCTC levy additional charge on users for ticket bookings via UPI? Railway Minister responds

Indian Railways Ticket Booking, IRCTC Ticket Booking: Indian Railways (IR) is continuously working to make end-to-end travel more passenger-centric. Since a passenger's journey begins at the ticket booking stage, the national transporter has been implementing measures to simplify the process. In July, several changes have been introduced in the ticketing system, including revised Tatkal booking timings for agents and making Aadhaar verification mandatory for Tatkal ticket reservation. During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw whether the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) levies additional charges on digital payments at the rate of Rs 10 for non-AC tickets and Rs 20 for AC tickets, when booked via UPI or other modes. He also questioned the rationale for levying such charges despite the government's push for promotion of cashless economy and usage of UPI. Responding to this, Vaishnaw said that has provided the facility to book reserved tickets online saving passengers from the trouble of going to reservation counters to book the tickets thus saving travel time and transportation costs. In a written statement on July 8, the Railway Minister added, 'IRCTC incurs substantial expenditure on providing online ticketing facility and in order to defray the cost incurred in maintenance, upgradation and expansion of ticketing infrastructure, a very nominal convenience fee is levied by IRCTC.' He also stated that the online ticket booking facility provided by IRCTC is one of the most passenger friendly initiatives of Indian Railways. 'At present about 87% of the reserved tickets are booked online,' the minister noted. Earlier this year, the IRCTC deactivated over 2.5 crore user IDs to curb malpractices in ticket booking system. 'With a view to curb malpractices in ticket booking system, IRCTC has recently deactivated over 2.5 crore user ids, as their credentials were found to be suspicious during extensive data point analysis,' Vaishnaw said. Bengaluru founder visits China, mindblown by ‘small town' with AQI 5 and ₹5,000 Sheraton hotel

In a viral LinkedIn post, a Bengaluru-based founder and IIM graduate shared her unexpected experience of visiting a small town in China that completely changed her view of urban development. Dania Faruqui visited a so-called small town in China, Shantou, and was shocked by its modern infrastructure.(Pexels/Representational Image) The founder, Dania Faruqui, had been researching innovations in wearable electric technology and discovered that China was leading the way in this field. What began as a simple search quickly turned into an unplanned international trip. She visited a town called Shantou, which local people referred to as a 'small town". Faruqui expected something similar to small towns in India, possibly less developed, with basic roads and services. She was completely taken aback by what she actually found. 'My mind got totally blown away in China!' the caption of the post reads. Stunned by the infrastructure and facilities: Faruqui noticed that the city had wide, clean roads with separate lanes for pedestrians, electric two-wheelers, and cars. Cabs travelled at speeds of up to 120 km/h, and almost all vehicles she saw were electric. She was also surprised to find that luxury hotels like Sheraton were very affordable, around ₹5,000 per night. What impressed her most was the city's "urban planning". According to Faruqui, trees were planted all along the roads, the air quality was excellent despite the town's industrial background the public spaces were well-maintained. There were flyovers, high-rise buildings, and no visible litter. "And lastly, mindful inclusion of children's engagement activities everywhere - from restaurants to shopping malls," she adds. Most children she saw were not using screens, which made her wonder if such features were encouraged through policy. Check out the post here: Screengrab of the LinkedIn post.(@Dania Faruqui/LinkedIn) The moment Faruqui landed in Bengaluru, she felt the difference. A 7-hour flight was followed by a 2.5-hour journey home, delayed significantly at the Benniganahalli flyover. After experiencing Shantou's seamless transport and thoughtful infrastructure, the return felt disappointing, almost like a sudden snap back to reality. The post quickly gained attention on LinkedIn, with many users expressing surprise at the level of infrastructure and planning described in what was called a "small town" in China.
