Adrian Degg, 47, kicked his victim unconscious outside a wake after accusing of him of sleeping with his ex-wife.
A businessman has been jailed after he launched a brutal assault on a man he believed had slept with his ex-wife – punching and kicking him unconscious outside a wake.
Adrian Degg, 47, set upon his victim outside The Cottage pub in Oakhill, Stoke-on-Trent, in December 2022. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard the businessman punched the man in the face, knocking him to the ground, before returning to kick him in the head 'with some force' as he lay unconscious.
The victim suffered two fractures to his jaw, needed metal plates inserted during surgery and has since been plagued by infections and ongoing health problems. He later described the attack as 'cowardly and vicious' and said it left him jobless, homeless and struggling with depression.
Degg, of Newcastle, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 27 months behind bars, reports StokeonTrentLive.
Prosecutor Hunter Gray told the court: 'The defendant swung his arm, connecting with the victim's face, who fell unconscious to the floor. The defendant then kicked him directly to the face. When asked what happened, he said, 'He slept with my ex-wife.''
The victim told how the assault has had devastating consequences, leaving him unable to eat properly and contributing to a decline in his health. Members of the family attending the wake said the shocking attack had tarnished the day, which was meant to be a celebration of their loved one's life.

In a statement, Degg claimed he felt threatened and insisted he had only struck the victim with 'not much force.'
Defence lawyer Paul Cliff argued that Degg, who runs a successful construction business, had stayed out of trouble for two decades and that prison would have a severe impact on his employees and family. He urged the judge to consider a suspended sentence.
But Judge Richard McConaghy said only immediate custody was appropriate. He told Degg: 'You hit him in the face, knocking him unconscious, then kicked him directly to the face. This was a revenge attack. You broke his jaw in two places, leaving him with ongoing complications.
'You are a hardworking man and have stayed out of trouble for 20 years, but your offending is so serious that only a prison sentence can follow.'

Man strangled girlfriend in rage over vape liquid

Man strangled girlfriend in rage over vape liquid 'I am constantly looking over my shoulder when I go anywhere out of fear I will bump into Nathan,' said the victim WalesOnline reporter confronts man who strangled girlfriend A man strangled his girlfriend for 30 seconds then punched her to the head as she lay defenceless on the floor. Nathan Howells, a 20-year-old from Bridgend, was in a rage because his then-partner had refused to go out and buy him vape fluid, Cardiff Crown Court heard. The victim described her 14-month relationship with Howells as "controlling". The court heard he would check her phone and prevent her from using social media. His behaviour culminated on October 29 last year in a terrifying episode of domestic abuse at her home. Prosecutor Kirsten Murphy said Howells had asked her to go to a shop and buy him e-liquid for his vape. When she refused he began throwing items around the room. "He punched a hole in the living room wall and pushed her to the chest, causing her to stumble back. "He called her useless. He used both hands to squeeze her throat for 30 seconds, causing her to feel lightheaded. She went upstairs and he followed her, kicking her belongings downstairs." The victim managed to message a family member on Snapchat, asking them to come over, but out of fear that Howells would see it she sent a follow-up message telling them not to worry. She was left with bruising and red marks on her neck. In her victim personal statement she said she had been struggling to sleep since the attack as she "constantly" replayed the incident, adding: "I am constantly looking over my shoulder when I go anywhere out of fear I will bump into Nathan." Howells, of Tremgarth in Wildmill, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation, assault and criminal damage. His barrister Jac Brown said he had no previous convictions and that on the morning of the offences he had learned of his aunt's death. "He became deliberately argumentative with the complainant and he recognises he simply lost it with her," said Mr Brown. The probation service assessed Howells as posing a medium risk of harm to the victim. Mr Brown argued this could be managed with a restraining order. "Prior to these offences he was unemployed and a frequent smoker of cannabis, which he used to cope with his unemployment," said Mr Brown. "He has realised cannabis will not help him and has abstained for several months now, while enjoying stability as a permanent contractor in a warehouse." Passing sentence, Judge Paul Hobson told Howells: "People who engage in behaviour of this kind, very often young men, should expect to be severely punished. An act of strangulation is inherently dangerous and terrifying for its victim. You only have to think what it would be like to be strangled and have difficulty breathing to realise why that is so." But the judge also took into account Howells' young age, the absence of previous convictions, and evidence that he had shown "some remorse". He imposed 12 months in a young offender institute suspended for two years. As it became clear Howells would be spared jail, there were gasps and tears of happiness from two women in the public gallery. The defendant himself showed no emotion. Howells was handed a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 180 hours of unpaid work. He must pay £600 in compensation and £100 in prosecution costs. Six severed heads dumped on road on busy street alongside chilling warning

Six severed heads have been dumped on a roadside in central Mexico - sparking terror in a region normally untouched by cartel violence. Six severed heads have been discovered on a road in central Mexico, sparking a major police investigation. ‌ ‌ The route where the remains were found connects the central states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. Police have yet to reveal a motive behind the killings or name the gangs who may have carried out the horror. ‌ A blanket was left at the scene with a chilling warning to rival gangs, according to local media. It was reportedly signed by a group calling itself La Barredora, which translates as "The Sweeper". 'La Barredora' happens to be the name of a little-known criminal gang that operates in the western state of Guerrero, however, there's no clarity on whether the cartel was behind the attack or their motive. The Tlaxcala Prosecutor's Office confirmed the victims were men and has launched a full investigation. Federal authorities are yet to comment. The shocking discovery comes in a region usually associated with fuel smuggling - known locally as 'huachicoleo' - a multi-billion dollar racket run by organised crime. It also follows a huge crackdown on fentanyl trafficking launched by President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration. Unlike states ravaged by cartel violence, Puebla and Tlaxcala, just over 100km from Mexico City, are seen as relatively peaceful. ‌ Tlaxcala accounts for just 0.5% of the 14,769 intentional homicides recorded nationwide between January and July, while Puebla makes up 3.4%. But both states have problems with gangs moving drugs, people and stolen fuel due to their central location. In 2022, Puebla authorities found 116 migrants crammed inside a truck. ‌ Elsewhere, in June this year, 20 men were found dead with gunshot wounds in cartel-ravaged Sinaloa, five of them decapitated. And in May, a gun attack at a Catholic festival in Guanajuato left seven young people dead. Meanwhile, in May, a shooting at a Catholic Church festival in the central state of Guanajuato resulted in the deaths of seven Mexican youths. Mexico has been gripped by soaring cartel violence since 2006, when the government first sent in the military. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and tens of thousands remain missing. Scots pensioner dies on cruise ship docked in Italian city

The 83-year-old was allegedly discovered lifeless in the water on Tuesday afternoon. A Scots OAP has died on board a cruise ship after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool while it was docked in Naples. ‌ The 83-year-old, who has not yet been named, was discovered in the pool of the Marella Voyager yesterday afternoon. Holidaymakers and crew desperately tried to save him but he could not be revived. ‌ Italian police boarded the vessel, placing it under temporary seizure as they carried out inquiries. The ship - which is operatured by TUI - was due to leave port at 5pm local time but was held back for several hours. ‌ Officers later ruled out any foul play, confirming the pensioner had taken ill in the water. The liner was eventually cleared to resume its journey around the Med. The Marella Voyager had set sail from Majorca on August 16 and had already visited Sardinia before arriving in Naples. It is now continuing on to Rome, Corsica, Spain and back to Majorca. An FCDO Spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Italy." TUI has been contacted for comment.
