My neighbour opposite has got a Ring doorbell - how can I ensure I'm not being filmed?

My neighbour who lives opposite me has installed a Ring doorbell. It means every time we leave and enter our home he could be watching us.
I know it may sound like we are being paranoid, but we don't know him well and don't like the idea of being filmed, particularly as we have young children.
We feel the doorbell is compromising our privacy, particularly as our living room and master bedroom look out over the road and both have big bay windows.
Can we complain and how can we ensure we are not being filmed?
Ed Magnus of This is Money replies: It's often impossible to avoid feeling overlooked by neighbours in an urban setting, but with tech gadgets being increasingly used these days it can start to feel like your home is under surveillance.
Many people are now installing smart doorbells, which allow them to see who is outside their property, whether they are at home or not.
Your neighbour is unlikely to pay any attention to the recordings, unless something happens which means they need to.
But even if they are, most Ring doorbells only record when activated by motion or a linked device, and typically for no more than one minute at a time.
The reality is, your neighbour is within their rights to install a Ring doorbell on their property.
If you're worried, it may be worth discussing the matter with your neighbour. Be polite rather than confrontational and point out that it's making you feel uncomfortable.
For expert advice we spoke to Scarlett Doyle, a solicitor in RWK Goodman's property disputes team and Karolina Kupczyk, a partner specialising in dispute resolution at Hodge Jones & Allen Solicitors.
Ring was contacted for comment.
Scarlett Doyle replies: Everyone should feel safe and comfortable in their own home, and with Ring and similar companies increasing in popularity and sales, it will be interesting to see how the courts balance the privacy of third parties against the homeowners' desire to protect themselves and their property.
The right of protection extends to your neighbour, too, and it might be they are simply taking measures to protect their home and those in it.
Guidance from the Information Commissioner's Office reminds people of the rules they need to follow when capturing images or audio recordings outside their property boundary.
Cameras should be in positions that only capture their own property. Where someone else's property is captured, data protection law applies.
This means you have the right to request a copy of this footage, because the footage can capture images and voices of other people, which counts as personal information.
Firstly, consider the distance between your property and your neighbour's camera.
Ring suggests its doorbells have a maximum motion detection range of 30 feet.
If your neighbour's camera is across the street, it may be you are out of range entirely.
As to how you can ensure you are not being filmed and assuming your property falls within the range, as a first step I would suggest approaching your neighbour and expressing your concerns.
You could ask if they would mind sharing recent 'motion detected' notifications they have received – they may be able to instantly put your mind at rest by showing you and your family are not detected on footage while going about your daily life.
But if your neighbour refuses to share a copy of the footage, or you review the footage and you are concerned with the content, seek legal advice for further support to help facilitate complaints and next steps.
Karolina Kupczyk replies: It is understandable that it is concerning when people feel they might be watched.
While security is important, it should not come at the expense of your privacy. You have the right to peaceful enjoyment of your home, and the law does provide protection.
Depending on the model, a doorbell camera has a range within which it can record video and often audio.
Those recordings can be captured 24/7 or triggered by a motion for a period of time.
Installation of such a device by your neighbour within the vicinity of your home can create various risks including invasion of privacy and data misuse – as the recordings might be stored and shared without your knowledge or consent.
A CCTV system capturing footage beyond the boundary of a private domestic property triggers duties under General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018 legislation.
Those include ensuring that the use of the camera is proportionate and not excessive.
Further duties include transparency (e.g. signs), clear purpose, and ensuring the footage is stored securely and not kept longer than necessary.
Regulating and enforcing of this legislation is within the competences of the ICO.

What can you do?
Karolina Kupczyk replies: Unfortunately, those situations can cause tensions with neighbours and an appropriate approach should be considered, taking into account individual circumstances.
You may also consider installing a privacy screen or trellis if appropriate, to obscure the camera's view without being confrontational.
If you are worried your property is covered by the camera and you are being recorded, the suggestion would be to have a friendly chat with your neighbour to assess the area that the camera covers and the footage it records.
Taking a balanced approach first will usually avoid a lasting conflict and it should normally be possible to adjust the coverage of the device to ensure certain areas are not captured.
If this is not possible or the neighbour refuses to cooperate you may submit a Subject Access Request (SAR) for copies of any footage that includes you or your property.
SARs should be made in writing and include enough detail to identify the footage (e.g. time and date). A template can be found on the ICO's website. Your neighbour has one month to respond.
If the issue cannot be resolved informally, you can complain to the ICO especially if the neighbour refuses to respond to your SAR or won't adjust excessive recording.
You may also contact your local council which may help with neighbour disputes.
If the problem is not resolved, especially if the surveillance is persistent, intrusive, or being used in a harassing way, please consider seeking legal advice.
How to find a new mortgage
Borrowers who need a mortgage because their current fixed rate deal is ending, or they are buying a home, should explore their options as soon as possible.

What if I need to remortgage?
Borrowers should compare rates, speak to a mortgage broker and be prepared to act.
Homeowners can lock in to a new deal six to nine months in advance, often with no obligation to take it.
Most mortgage deals allow fees to be added to the loan and only be charged when it is taken out. This means borrowers can secure a rate without paying expensive arrangement fees.
Keep in mind that by doing this and not clearing the fee on completion, interest will be paid on the fee amount over the entire term of the loan, so this may not be the best option for everyone.
What if I am buying a home?
Those with home purchases agreed should also aim to secure rates as soon as possible, so they know exactly what their monthly payments will be.
Buyers should avoid overstretching and be aware that house prices may fall, as higher mortgage rates limit people's borrowing ability and buying power.

Buy-to-let landlords with interest-only mortgages will see a greater jump in monthly costs than homeowners on residential mortgages.

There's nothing like a bag of chip-shop chips eaten outdoors, and although many may claim that there can never be leftovers of such a treat, reality begs to differ. And here's where, for cooks, it gets interesting. Because chip-shop chips have myriad possibilities, to the extent that the topic once went viral when historian Lucy Worsley shared a kitchen tip from a follower on social media. 'I have received a kitchen tip that would be HUGE IF TRUE,' she wrote. 'Can you really put leftover chip-shop chips in the freezer then use them as oven chips?' The intriguing post notched up huge numbers of likes and comments, with many respondents stating that instead of binning their greasy leftovers they enjoyed them second time round, finding reheated chips 'even tastier and more crispy' than when fresh from the chippy. 'Yes! Yes! Yes! I do it all the time,' wrote one chip-lover, 'and they're much better than frozen packet chips.' Recommendations for the best way to store and reheat the cold fries were varied. Dry frying is a popular method for renewing former glory. 'They'll fluff up like new,' said one of Worsley's followers. The air fryer, however, was undoubtedly the preferred method for most commenters. 'Store them in Tupperware in the fridge, cook them in an air fryer the next day,' advised one with another promise that they'll be 'better than when they came from the chip shop'. Tempted? If not, freeze the chips in a bag. There is no need to freeze them flat on a tray first. Their oil coating doesn't freeze solid so they won't clump together. The best ways to reheat Leftover chips reheat nicely in the oven from both chilled and frozen. Spread them out on a baking tray in a single layer and roast at 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. You'll need to judge how long to cook them depending on their thickness and how well done they were in the first place. I get the quickest and crispiest results using my energy-efficient air fryer, but am unimpressed with microwaved fries, which turn out floppy and soggy. Seven uses for yesterday's fries Chip butty Reheat your chips in the oven or air fryer until piping hot. Give them a fresh toss with a little salt – and vinegar – if you like. Stuff between two slices bread (white is best, generously buttered) and serve immediately with your preferred sauce for dipping. Battered chips Toss in flour then dip them into a batter made from self-raising flour and sparkling water. Heat 2cm vegetable oil in a frying pan and cook for 3-4 minutes. Hash In a hot pan, fry some diced chorizo until crispy. Add a sliced onion and cook until soft, then stir in a red pepper and a chopped chilli. Cook for about 5 minutes. Chop up the leftover chips and mix them through the hash. Cook for a few minutes more, until everything is piping hot. Serve with a fried egg and a sprinkle of coriander. Tortilla Stir into beaten egg. Add herbs, onions or cheese. Cook over a low heat, turning until golden and set. Dirty fries Spread the chips out in a baking dish and sprinkle with paprika. Spoon over chopped tomatoes, grated cheese, sliced red onion and chillies. Bake at 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6 until bubbling. Alternatively, just melted cheese will do nicely. Poutine Reheat then cover with gravy. Scatter with diced curd cheese or mozzarella. Chaffles Take a handful of leftover chips and press them into a waffle iron. Cook over a low heat until golden and crisp. Serve savoury – with ketchup or your favourite sauce – or go sweet with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Dear A&E, I've been with my girlfriend for two years and we've always got on really well as a couple in social situations, backing each other up and taking one another's side. Lately, though, I've found her starting to undermine me in little ways when we're out with friends – disputing my account of things that happened; contradicting me on little details; always needing to have the last word. I'm not naturally argumentative but it's starting to really bother me. She's really lovely and cosy in private. Should I talk to her, and what should I say? – Downcast Dear Downcast, Some happy, lifelong marriages involve one partner loudly and aggressively criticising the other in public. 'That story is so boring,' she squawks. 'Are you still talking??' he sneers. For many of us – as observers – this is both baffling and extremely unpleasant to be around but, hey, the heart wants what the heart wants and it's a dynamic that works for them. It is not, however, a dynamic that is working for you. At the moment it only bothers you but who's to say that, further down the line, it won't distress you. If you do not like this dynamic then you should address it as it is unlikely to go away by itself. Unfortunately, these things, left unchecked, will have a habit of either bedding in or intensifying and that has the potential to make you very unhappy. Unhappy people who actively avoid confrontation risk withdrawing, proving their point – or demonstrating their hurt – through action (or inaction), which could start to meaningfully alienate you from each other. Scary, right? If you bring this up, you might start a huge row or hear something you don't want to hear. It's only when you begin to understand what's happening, you can work out what to do. At the moment you are a bit hurt and a bit baffled – understandable but rendering you powerless. It is often at this stage of the relationship that you need to find courage. It is important to feel able to talk to the person you are with about what is going in between you. We know that sounds as though we're stating the bleeding obvious but it can feel frightening. Or exhausting. And lots of us duck it where possible. Be brave, Downcast. It will give the relationship the best chance of growing or, failing that, it will give you the best chance of growing. Right at the beginning of love affairs, we tend to find it sweet when our new and adored person gets things wrong. Or we don't even see it. Later, we may start to find it annoying but, hopefully, we make a decision – based on the bigger scheme of things – to right-size our responses; to look beyond. This is not denial. It is love. There is a chance that she may not know she is behaving in this way; that she had some kind of combative/judgmental elements to her early life. A fighty or one-upmanship-y childhood. Even a puritanical education may have nudged her towards becoming a kind of fact-checker. It doesn't really matter if an amusing anecdote is 'right', does it? The listener doesn't care whether it was Whitstable or Brixham; whether it was raining or snowing. How much does it matter to her that she is right? Would she rather be right or happy? You have various courses of action open to you. You could tell her that it is deeply uncomfortable for everyone when she does this – but that is actively shaming and makes it about the audience rather than your connection. 'Everyone thinks so…' is always a bastard thing to say unless it's around a compliment. You could try a bit of a shock approach and respond in the moment, in public, by saying something like 'I find it very difficult when you talk to me like that.' However, seeing as you have established, in your letter, that this is a kind of performative feistiness that rises in her only when you are among other people, that could cause trouble. We would think that a quiet moment, when you are alone and all is calm, might be a productive time to say something like, 'When you criticise me in public – which I feel is happening more often – what are you trying to tell me? I find it difficult, in the moment but, if there is something you need me to know, I would really like to hear it now. I don't love those public moments, which hurt my feelings, but I do love you and I'd like to understand why it happens and also look at my part in it.' What a man, Downcast! We obviously have no idea how this will go. But for both your own personal development and the future of this romance, it feels crucial that you are able to have the conversation.

HEREFORD: I came upon a beautifully marked silvery grass snake; it was three feet long. As it did not slip away, I looked at it carefully and concluded that some foolish person had attempted to kill it. It was damaged just behind its head. I picked it up and decided reluctantly to finish it off, as it would have slowly died. Grass snakes do a lot of good because they live on grubs and insects. It is a pity people are afraid of them as they are perfectly harmless. Two young cuckoos were sitting on the telegraph wires, possibly preparing to leave the country. One might easily have taken them for hawks with their speckled plumage. I believe many young cuckoos are shot in mistake for hawks. I have been taking honey. The hives are jammed up with it. I am never quite clear about the way bee scouts direct a queen to a residence chosen by them for a swarm. I suppose they close round her and all go along together. Perhaps, the method of dancing on the combs is used, which is done when a find of honey has been made and information of its whereabouts is conveyed, by the finder to the other bees.
