'Media would write Sridevis dumb, I refuse to believe that': Poonam Dhillon

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Veteran actor Poonam Dhillon, who won countless hearts with her graceful screen presence and ethereal beauty as part of Indian cinema since the late 70s, continues to captivate audiences with her timeless charm.
Recently, Poonam sat down with ANI to give a sneak peek into how yesteryear actresses used to behave on and off sets.
Poonam quipped, "Oh, I've done that for years. I was this dumb blonde. I didn't understand anything anybody was saying for years and years."
She also explained why earlier heroines used to behave in such a manner. And it does make sense.
"It was for two reasons. Sometimes if non-veg jokes were being cracked on the set so you didn't sit and guffaw with them. You just pretended you didn't understand only what they've said. So that, you know, that little distance is maintained. Because the moment you start backslapping and cracking non-veg jokes with the heroes, they, in our times, used to think that it's a signal that you are a little more than willing for certain things. So being dumb was very convenient for years," Poonam said.
She also talked about how the media had misconceptions about late actor Sridevi.
"Sridevi is such a brilliant actor. She cannot be so brilliant if she were dumb. The media would write, 'oh she's dumb. She'll say ask mummy, ask mummy.' I say that's a ploy. She's a very bright and sharp girl. Otherwise, how can she be such an amazing actor? I refuse to believe it," Poonam recalled.
Poonam worked with Sridevi in films such as 'Sone Pe Suhaaga' and 'Judaai'. Poonam's films 'Red Rose' and 'Nishana' were also Hindi remakes of Sridevi's notable movies in Tamil and Telugu languages.
Opening up about her experience working with the late star, Poonam shared, "I've always been an admirer of her work. I have worked with her in a couple of films..But she was a subdued person."
Sridevi breathed her last on February 24, 2018, in Dubai. (ANI)

Who is first Indian actor to act in Hollywood? Meet Sabu Dastagir who earned Hollywood Walk of Fame star 65 years ago

It is not every day that we get to celebrate news as big as Deepika Padukone getting a star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. Recently, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's selection panel announced the list of 2025 inductees in the prestigious Walk of Fame, and it included the name of the Tamasha actress. But there was yet another Indian, almost 65 years ago, who became the first Indian to achieve this. He was Sabu Dastagir, a Mysore-born boy who went on to become a Hollywood sensation. About Sabu Dastagir Not 2025, but it was in 1960, that the class of the Hollywood Walk of Fame had an Indian name for the first time. Not many must have heard about Sabu Dastagir, but let us tell you that he was a sensation in Hollywood before World War 2. He was born in Mysore in 1924 to an elephant mahout. An American filmmaker, Robert Flaherty, spotted him and chose him for the 1937 film Elephant Boy. This film was based on Rudyard Kipling's book with the same name. In 1938, after Sabu's yet another Hollywood film, The Drum released, he moved there. After his stint as Abu in the 1940 film The Thief of Bagdad, Dastagir became a star. After this, he also starred in films like Mowgli, Arabian Nights, White Savage and Cobra Woman. It wouldn't be wrong to say that he had made a mark for himself in Hollywood at a very young age. He was one of the most popular non-white actors who were a part of major hit films. Sabu Dastagir's Journey In The Army After becoming a household name in Hollywood and becoming an American citizen, the actor joined the US Army in 1944. He even fought World War 2, which marked the end of his acting career. He no longer got acting roles, and in the 50s, Sabu appeared in mostly unsuccessful European films. Did Sabu Dastagir Work in Bollywood? Not many know that he was Mehboob Khan's first choice for Nargis Dutt 's Mother India. Unfortunately, as he did not get the work permit and the role went to Sunil Dutt. This could have been his gateway to Bollywood, but he could never work here, as in 1963, he suffered a heart attack and passed away when he was only 39.

2025 First Half Box Office Report Card: From Chhaava To Sitaare Zameen Par

New Delhi: The first half of 2025 delivered mixed signals for the Indian film industry. While overall collections have improved from the last two years, the real story lies in who delivered and who didn't. Film analyst Girish Wankhede explains, "If we see the box office report of the first 6 months of 2025, the industry has fared much better than in 2024 and 2023. In 2023, we had five Rs 100 crore films. In 2024, only three. But this year, six films have crossed the Rs 100 crore mark." Absolute Hits of 2025 So Far: • Chhaava - Rs 585 Crore • Raid 2 - Rs 173 Crore • Bhool Chuck Maaf - Rs 152 Crore • Sitaare Zameen Par - Rs 121 Crore (and counting) These four not only hit Rs 100 crore, but were also declared clean commercial hits thanks to strong word of mouth and fresh storytelling. Big Stars, Big Budgets, Low Returns Despite crossing Rs 100 crore, star-studded films like Housefull 5 (Rs 182 crore), Sikandar (Rs 110 crore), and Kesari Chapter 3 struggled to impress audiences and were marked as underwhelming. Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and others couldn't lift these titles into hit territory. Comparisons With Past Years: 2024: • Fighter - Rs 212 crore • Shaitaan - Rs 148 crore • Munjya - Rs 102 crore 2023: • Pathaan - Rs 524.53 crore • The Kerala Story - Rs 239.05 crore • Adipurush - Rs 147.92 crore • Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar - Rs 147.28 crore • Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan - Rs 110.94 crore With most of the 30+ releases in first half of 2025 flopping, it's clear that audiences are rewarding substance over stardom. All eyes are now on the second half for redemption or reinforcement of the shift.
