Behind surfer Ramesh's bronze, a tale of resillience
FROM not qualifying for last year's Asian surfing meet to making history as the first Indian surfer to win a medal in an Asian meet, Ramesh Budihal has risen out of deep waters. On the coast, the Kerala-man has navigated the toughest of waves. It was a tougher challenge. He lost his father last year, in addition to the disappointment of qualification. On Sunday, Ramesh clinched bronze with a 12.60-point performance in the open men's final of the Asian Surfing Championship in Mahabalipuram. "My goal was to win gold. But I'm still proud to take the bronze. I am happy with the support from the team," he told this daily, a day after his performance. It took Ramesh three years to come to this stage and achieve this feat. "If we get more opportunities, we can put ourselves into higher performances and more medals," he added. In a way, this tournament was his last-chance saloon, and his give-it-all performance has earned him India's first medal in surfing at the continental event.

‘Perfect Dhoni successor' named by Kris Srikkanth — and it's not Ruturaj Gaikwad
Synopsis Kris Srikkanth has ignited IPL speculation by suggesting Sanju Samson as the ideal successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, citing Samson's exceptional talent and popularity in Tamil Nadu. While acknowledging Ruturaj Gaikwad as another captaincy option, Srikkanth believes Samson's strong brand presence makes him a valuable asset for CSK. Agencies MS Dhoni (left) and Sanju Samson Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has fuelled the IPL rumour mill by naming Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson as the perfect successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings — and he has a clear reason on his YouTube channel on Saturday, Srikkanth said Samson's 'brilliant' skills and strong brand presence in Tamil Nadu made him an obvious choice should he leave Rajasthan.'Sanju is a brilliant player and he is very popular in Chennai. He has got a good brand image in Chennai. I will be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,' Srikkanth remarked, responding to media reports linking Samson with a possible move. The 64-year-old, however, acknowledged that CSK already have a captaincy option in Ruturaj Gaikwad, who briefly led the team last season before Dhoni returned due to Gaikwad's injury. 'He is the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with,' Srikkanth said. Dhoni, 44, is widely expected to be nearing the end of his IPL career. Last season, CSK endured a tough campaign, finishing bottom of the table with just four wins. Used mainly as a finisher, Dhoni scored 196 runs at a strike rate above reports of a possible rift between Samson and Royals' head coach Rahul Dravid, Srikkanth said the franchise had built their side around the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter.'I would not let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He has been paid Rs 18 crore,' he who joined RR in 2013, has scored 4,027 IPL runs, including two centuries. Despite injuries last season, he averaged 35.63 in nine matches. (With inputs from ToI)

Messi Kerala visit row escalates as govt, Argentine FA trade blame; Opposition alleges waste of Rs 130 crore
KOCHI: The Messi-in-Kerala dream has spiralled into a full-blown slugfest, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the state government trading blame over the collapse of the plan. On Saturday, reports claimed AFA official Leandro Peterson had accused the Kerala government of breaching the contract, a charge dismissed by Sports Minister V Abdurahiman as 'baseless', insisting that if the team skipped the October visit, it would be the AFA in breach. The fresh twist has emboldened the Opposition Congress to go on the offensive, demanding that the government explain how a high-profile project, for which sponsors say they paid Rs 130 crore and the state spent lakhs on foreign trips, has spiralled into confusion, contract disputes and allegations of public money being wasted. Abdurahiman had dampened football lovers' hopes earlier this week, saying the visit by the Argentina team was 'unlikely' to happen as planned. As per some media reports, Leandro denied his side had breached the contract by postponing the tour to next year and instead pinned the blame on the Kerala government, though without detailing the alleged violations. The minister dismissed the reports and reiterated that Kerala was not interested in hosting the team next year. Govt should come clean, says Cong 'If Argentina fail to visit Kerala in October, we will see it as a breach of contract and a case of cheating. We are actively trying to bring the team here as per the contract. When a country signs the contract and accepts the money in this, what else do we have to say,' he told reporters in Malappuram.
